SUNDAY, March 31st at 1:30pm slt: TEA TIME ~ Sherlock Holmes' Greatest Hits Continues

Today we present the second of the top four Sherlock Holmes' Adventures from our recent poll: THE ADVENTURE OF THE MUSGRAVE RITUAL from "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes" (1894).

In the story, Holmes recounts to Watson the events arising after a visit from a university acquaintance, Reginald Musgrave. Musgrave visits Holmes after the disappearance of two of his domestic staff, Rachel Howells, a maid, and Richard Brunton, the longtime butler. The pair vanished after Musgrave had dismissed Brunton for secretly reading a family document, the Musgrave Ritual.

Our presentation today will have a little twist - all in support of gender equity.  Come have a listen as Cale and Savi read Holmes and Watson!

Da5id Abbot, Corwyn Allen, Savanah Blindside, and Caledonia Skytower, live on stream in the Library's Fireside Room.

WEDNESDAY, March 27th at 7pm: MY WORD! Selections from the chiseled pen points of Frank Muir and Denis Norden

Frank Muir CBE (1920-1998) and Denis Norden CBE (1922-2018) many not be familiar names to many, but they were one of the top comedy writing duos – and successful writers, authors, presenters and entertainers – in the UK working both on radio and television.

Together they wrote BBC Radio‘s Take It From Here for over 10 years, and then appeared on BBC radio quizzes My Word! and My Music for another 35.

Muir was additionally a writer on the 1960s satire programmes That Was The Week That Waswhich launched the television career of David Frost (perhaps most internationally recognised for his interview with President Nixon following the latter’s resignation from office), and The Frost Report., again featuring David Frost. Muir went on to become Assistant Head of Light Entertainment at the BBC in the 1960s, and was then London Weekend Television‘s founding Head of Entertainment. However, he is probably most fondly remembered in the UK as a team captain on the  long-running BBC 2 witty comedy quiz series Call My Bluff, and as a voice-over artist in a number of famous UK television commercials.

Norden partnered in writing with Muir for more than 50 years, writing and producing radio and television shows for some of the top entertainers in the UK in those mediums during the 1960s. As a writer in his own right, Norden penned a number of Hollywood film scripts, including Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell and The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom, and wrote, narrated and starred in A Child’s Guide To Blowing Up A Car – a behind-the-scenes featurette showing how a stunt used in the James Bond movie Thurderball was put together, and which now appears on the 2006 ‘Ultimate Edition’ Thunderball DVD. Norden is perhaps most famously known for It’ll be Alright on the Night, his show featuring out-takes and bloopers from film and television, which ran from 1977 through to 2006, much of the material from which was “borrowed” by NBC in the United States for Dick Clark’s Bloopers.

WHEN WE SAY "THOUSANDS", WE ARE NOT KIDDING!

On Sunday the 24th, not only did we celebrate 11 years of stories, we also finally updated our Archive of works presented over the last decade and more.  This includes titles of stories, full works, organized by year.

We've still got some work to do on it, it's not perfect yet!  But it is now available for viewing and WOW!  Over 2000 individual title entries from everything as general as a session entitled "Eerie Tales" to Lewis Carroll's "Phantasmagoria."

So when we say, "thousands of stories, hundreds of authors, dozen of genres..." we are not kidding!

THURSDAY March 21st at 7pm: THE LADY OF FINNEGAN'S HEARTH pt2

"A joyous, bouncing Irish hellion"
THE LADY OF FINNEGAN'S HEARTH

Though time and legend have told the tale of Isolde, neither these nor any Jute-twanging minstrel ever did her justice . She was a joyous, bouncing Irish hellion who died at nineteen, a bundle of brogue and bad manners, all heart and no head; a thoroughly medieval urchin whose first utterance in Glory was that she had been abducted from the world against her will and demanded immediate return. Her claim was not considered.

WEDNESDAY, March 20th at 7PM: More from THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS

Here today, up and off to somewhere else tomorrow! Travel, change, interest, excitement! The whole world before you, and a horizon that's always changing!

― Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows

Alternately slow-moving and fast-paced, author Kenneth Grahame's 1908 classic focuses on four anthropomorphized animals in a pastoral version of Edwardian England. The novel is notable for its mixture of mysticism, adventure, morality, camaraderie; and celebrated for its evocation of the nature of the Thames Valley

TUESDAY, March 19th AT 7PM: THE SHADOW BY THE GATE

"Pookah" by Jack Butler Yeats
It was six years ago that Caledonia began self-publishing her short stories, beginning with her first publication A TRIO OF IRISH TALES.

The Shadow by the Gate is the first tale featuring young Liam, a 21st C teenager transplanted from metropolitan Chicago to very rural Ireland - it is the story that started it all. As Liam arrives in the strange world of his grandmother, filled with legends and folklore, he's not prepared to trip over one of his grandmother's tales come very much to life.

SUNDAY, March 17th at 4pm slt: THE QUIET MAN ~ A Seanchai Tradition

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!  Put down the green beer, silly!  We are celebrating with a favorite story and you are invited.

"Shawn Kelvin, a blithe young lad of 20, went to the States to seek his fortune. And 15 years thereafter he returned to his native Kerry, his blitheness sobered and his youth dried to the core, and whether he had made his fortune or whether he had not no one could be knowing for certain. For he was a quiet man, not given to talking about himself and the things he had done. A quiet man, under middle size, with strong shoulders and deep-set blue eyes below brows darker than his dark hair - that was Shawn Kelvin."

Thus begins Maurice Walsh's original short story as it was published in the Saturday Evening Post in February of 1933.  It was subsequently revised and published with other Walsh stories of the same era, the characters and contents of which were molded by Director John Ford and Screenwriter Frank S. Nugent over more than a decade into the 1952 Academy Award-winning motion picture starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, and Victor McLaglen.

WEDNESDAY, March 13th at 7PM: More from THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS

“Beyond the Wild Wood comes the Wild World," said the Rat. "And that's something that doesn't matter, either to you or to me. I've never been there, and I'm never going, nor you either, if you've got any sense at all.”

― Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows

TUESDAY, March 12th at 7PM: POETS & BARDS with Caledonia

Whether singing or reciting, the bardic tradition of the celts is one of truth to power, and lyric
preservation of history. Whether stanza or song, it is storytelling in one of its earliest expansive forms.

Caledonia shares two stories around the fire in Ceiliuradh Glen tonight:

THE POET'S CURSE is the story of a bard who let his great power go to his head, as he threatens a King and Queen, and the security of their kingdom.  The shade of an ancient warrior emerges from the mists to save the day.

THE BARD: selections from a greater work by author Morgan Llewellyn.  An young bard takes his first steps towards becoming master of his art, and comes to understand in a very real and dramatic way, the power of poetry.

Presented live on stream.

TEA TIME: Sherlock Holmes' Greatest Hits!

The votes are in, and today we present the first of the top four Sherlock Holmes' Adventures from our recent poll: THE ADVENTURE OF THE DYING DETECTIVE from "His Last Bow" (1917).

Dr. Watson is called to tend Holmes, who is apparently dying of a rare tropical disease, Tapanuli fever, contracted while he was on a case. Watson is shocked, not having heard about his friend’s illness. Mrs. Hudson says that Holmes has neither eaten nor drunk anything in three days. Although Watson wishes to examine Holmes himself or send for a specialist, Holmes demands that Watson wait several hours before seeking help. So, Watson is forced to wait, in extreme worry as Holmes mutters nonsense.
