THURSDAY September 27th at 7pm: X-FILES: It's All In The Eyes

"Evil eyes gleamed into hers"
X-FILES: It's All In The Eyes

Skeletons hung from the rafters... along with images of classic movie monsters. Ghosts, witches, vampires, creepy looking corpses, clowns, dolls, and other decorations as Hannah Barton entered the giant deserted warehouse store. Scary things to make up a cool Halloween atmosphere for a party or a haunted house. And all looking at her with those evil eyes. Suddenly it seemed as if they had all taken a step forward.
It was late.
Everyone else was gone...

WEDNESDAY, September 26th at 7pm: TINY AND THE MONSTER

"They were bound to call him 'Tiny.' The name was good for a laugh when he was a pup, and many times afterward...

"Tiny wasn't tiny - but the monster was definitely horrific. Tiny, on the other hand, displayed a quite incredible intelligence for a dog ..."

From Theodore Sturgeon's Tiny and The Monster

Ktadhn Vesuvino shares this wonderful, dog's--eye-view perspective from one of the great authors of Science Fiction. Presented live in voice.

TUESDAY, September 25th at 7pm: THE HOUSE WITH THE CLOCK IN ITS WALLS Begins

When Lewis Barnavelt, an orphan. comes to stay with his uncle Jonathan, he expects to meet an ordinary person. But he is wrong. Uncle Jonathan and his next-door neighbor, Mrs. Zimmermann, are both magicians! Lewis is thrilled. At first, watching magic is enough. Then Lewis experiments with magic himself and unknowingly resurrects the former owner of the house: a woman named Serenna Izard. It seems that Serenna and her husband built a timepiece into the walls--a clock that could obliterate humankind. And only the Barnavelts can stop it!

Note:  We've heard a rumor that the book is much scarier than the movie. But we are in safe hands with Faerie!

Faerie Maven-Pralou presents the first in John Bellairs’ Lewis Barnavelt series, originally published in the 1970s.

TEA TIME at Baker Street: The Hound of the Baskervilles - Episode 4

"The Bacon" has returned to Baskerville Hall, and WAIT!  What's that?
Tomatoes, sausages?

"Baskerville Hall, Oct. 15th. MY DEAR HOLMES: If I was compelled to leave you without much news during the early days of my mission you must acknowledge that I am making up for lost time, and that events are now crowding thick and fast upon us."   ~ Dr. John Watson

Dr. Watson and Sir Henry Baskerville continue to uncover more oddities and coincidences, struggling at the confines that the still absent Holmes dictated before sending them on their way to Dartmoor.  Indeed, add one escaped convict and yet another mystery woman to the brew this week, as The Hound of the Baskervilles continues.

David Abbot, Corwyn Allen, Kayden Oconnell, and Caledonia Skytower, live in voice.

THURSDAY, September 20th at 7pm: DON'T MAKE ME PULL OVER! Concludes

This week: we make one final visit to that golden era of car broiled food; unfamiliar beds; and that strange and memorable bonding that happens when a family travels together over miles of open road.

NOTE:  Don't forget to share your own memories on notecards and put them in the red box on the desk, so Cale can consider sharing them next week.

WEDNESDAY, September 16th at 7pm: International Talk Like A Pirate Day!

"I had a role in 'DodgeBall,' where I played a pirate who played dodge ball. I'd say 80 to 90 percent of my lines were 'Garrr' or 'Arghh.' And it was all about what the quality of your 'Grr-arr' was."
~ Alan Tudyk, Actor

Join us for an hour of gleeful piratical mischief, including:
  • Interplanetary Piratess Meteor Mags
  • Another round of George-a-Palooza from the canon of R.Crap Mariner, with Cale, Corwyn, Faerie, and the pirate himself!
  • Something a classic from Caledonia
So dig-up your dress eyepatch, dust off your wooden leg, and get ready for an hour of fun and frolic.

NOTE:  Captain Cale may set sail after the session, and brave sea dogs are welcome to tie themselves to the gunwall and tag along.

TUESDAY, September 18th at 7pm: WISHTREE Continues

Red the tree was a community of her own, a fixture in the neighborhood.  Working with both a shy girl, and a naive young boy, Red endeavours to connect where other forces would rend apart, all the while with Red's own existence hanging perilously on the line.

Funny, deep, warm, and nuanced, this is Katherine Applegate at her very best—writing from the heart, and from a completely unexpected point of view.

This week: where were we staying and what were we eating as we barrelled down the freshly paved interstate to destinations unknown and only imagined?  Enterprise, innovation, and straight out American moxey are part and parcel of the stories of the golden era of the road trip.

WEDNESDAY, September 12th at 7pm: ROLL IT! An Original Story

Image "Psychedelic Rose" by Pennie Gibson

About the story, "Roll It!":

"There are many opinions on where ideas come from. Take your pick. I'm more interested in the process through which an idea makes its way into the outside world. And then... what happens after the idea becomes tangible?

"Time is a fixed resource. Mass requires work. The wheel is a lever that can move time around. "Roll It!" is an exploration of idea, process and implications, 20 years of experience collected, distilled and condensed into an hour.

"The spoken story will be accompanied by photographs on a large screen, and this time I will remember how to use it. The visual show is an adjunct designed to work in parallel with the spoken story.

"Write what you know. Read what you love. I like this story."

Ktadhn Vesuvino presents his original story, complete with accompanying images, Live in voice.

TUESDAY, September 11th at 7pm: WISHTREE Continues

"Applegate has a quirky imagination and a deft touch. She has created believable nonhuman characters before, most memorably in “The One and Only Ivan,” her Newbery Medal-winning novel narrated by an artistic animal who spends 27 years in captivity in a shopping mall. (That book opens winningly with the lines, “Hello. I am Ivan. I am a gorilla. It’s not as easy as it looks.”) Red, for her part, has a sly wit, aware that a human might be hugging her one minute, and the next, sending her to become tongue depressors.

"Living in a neighborhood that has seen Italian, Chinese, Spanish and Nigerian families come and go, Red now throws her shade over the home of a Muslim family that includes a shy, gentle 10-year-old girl, Samar, who sneaks into her yard every night to visit Red and is soon accepted by the tree creatures. Bongo gives Samar gifts from her hoard of trinkets. But something has changed: Samar’s family is not welcomed by the neighborhood. Angry men yell out insults as they drive by. They throw eggs at the house. And one horrible morning, a boy attacks her bark with a screwdriver. Red can tell “from the determined way he moved that it was meant to hurt.” What he writes is aimed at the hearts of the Muslim family: LEAVE."  ~ Dominique Browning, New York Times, Review

Funny, deep, warm, and nuanced, this is Katherine Applegate at her very best—writing from the heart, and from a completely unexpected point of view.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's one full length novel featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, of Baker Street fame continues today with Episode 2: The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Anonymous notes, inexplicably missing boots, and strange bearded men who pursue them by cab through the streets of London all speak of something that is not quite as it should be. Sir Henry plans to move into Baskerville Hall, despite the ominous warning message, as The Hound of the Baskervilles continues.

THURSDAY, September 6th at 7pm: DON'T MAKE ME PULL OVER! Begins

In the days before cheap air travel, families in America didn’t so much take vacations as survive them. Between home and destination lay  hundreds – perhaps thousands of miles of road, and dozens of annoyances.

During his childhood, Richard Ratay experienced all of them; from being crowded into the back seat with noogie-happy older brothers, to picking out a souvenir only to find that a better one might have been had at the next attraction, to dealing with a dad who didn’t believe in bathroom breaks.

Caledonia presents selections from this informal history of the family road trip: part historical and part reminiscence, live in voice.

WEDNESDAY, September 5th at 7PM: TALES OF THE ARABIAN NIGHTS ~ "The Voyages of Sinbad" Concludes

(Public Domain) "The History of Codadad
& His Brothers" from THE ARABIAN NIGHTS
illustrated by Maxfield Parrish in 1909

Caliph: Where will you find the crew, Sinbad?

Sinbad: The bravest of my former men will sail with me.

Caliph: That will not be enough. Where will you find the others?

Clearly the Caliph has heard the news - the chances of returning from a journey with Sinbad are very thin, unless you are Sinbad himself, of course.

Caledonia picks up in the middle of the Third Voyage of Sinbad, where the merchant and mariner faces his most terrifying peril yet: Death by Marriage!

Join us for this, and the remaining three voyages, presented from the 1909 "The Arabian Nights: Their Best-Known Tales" edited by Kate Douglas Wiggin and Nora A Smith, and famously illustrated by Maxfield Parrish., live in voice.

TUESDAY, September 4th at 7pm: WISHTREE Begins

Trees can't tell jokes, but they can certainly tell stories. . . .

Red is an oak tree who is many rings old. Red is the neighborhood "wishtree"—people write their wishes on pieces of cloth and tie them to Red's branches. Along with her crow friend Bongo and other animals who seek refuge in Red's hollows, this "wishtree" watches over the neighborhood.

You might say Red has seen it all. Until a new family moves in. Not everyone is welcoming, and Red's experiences as a wishtree are more important than ever.

Funny, deep, warm, and nuanced, this is Katherine Applegate at her very best—writing from the heart, and from a completely unexpected point of view.

Faerie Maven-Pralou presents, live in voice.
