THURSDAY November 1st at 7pm: THE UPPER BERTH

THE UPPER BERTH
"something ghostly moved in my grip"

“I remember that the sensation as I put my hands forward was as though I were plunging them into the air of a damp cellar, and from behind the curtains came a gust of wind that smelled horribly of stagnant sea-water. I laid hold of something that had the shape of a man’s arm, but was smooth, and wet, and icy cold.”

THURSDAY October 25th at 7pm: HALLOWEEN RITUALS

"Ghosties and ghoulies on the prowl "
HALLOWE'EN RITUALS

Ghosties and ghoulies on the prowl on All Hallows Eve, ready to steal away the innocent, and punish the guilty. Old scores settled in the dead of night, by demons and lost souls who have slipped through the divide between our world and the mystical.

Books are magical things when you let your imagination run riot, as you take in the sights and sounds, and even the smells of a story. The Halloween season is one of the greatest times of all to make use of all of those senses, and ingest everything a story can bring you.

You don’t need Hollywood’s multi-million-dollar blockbusters to scare you at Halloween. All you need is a well-written story, a storytellers magical voice, and an imagination to go with it, and all your fears will come true

Tonight's stories take place on THE night itself...

RITUAL
Bored one Halloween night, two couples follow a map from an old book of ghost stories to an abandoned nineteenth century church. To their horror, the book left out a few key details.

PUMPKIN REX
The King was dimly aware that he’d once had another name, but that no longer mattered. He’d arrived at last, to rule over his realm with his witch-queen at his side. Starting from tonight, time would be obsolete and useless; it would always be “Midnight on Halloween”, and the world would always belong to the October creatures.

THURSDAY October 18th at 7pm: DOORBELLS AT DUSK - Halloween Tales

"Carve your pumpkins and turn on the porch light"
DOORBELLS AT DUSK
Halloween Tales

Halloween frights begin with the sound of… Doorbells at Dusk.

Dusk is when trick or treating begins, join us tonight and enter the world of Halloween chills that is "Doorbells at Dusk", watch out for those trick or treaters.....they could just be harmless, innocent children, out for a night of fun and candy, or they could be monsters, intent on possessing you, attacking you, or invading your home, never to leave! As we stroll further along, and notice the neat, lifelike Halloween decorations in the yard of the most enthusiastic Halloween lover, do those decorations look a bit too.....lifelike....or, is the late hour just playing tricks on your mind? Does that wicked carved jack o lantern seem to be speaking to you, putting murderously evil thoughts in your mind, or are you just getting a little TOO much into the spirit of the season? Does that scarecrow on the next porch appear a bit too lifelike, or have you watched one too many horror movies? And what's the matter with that huge mansion at the end of the street, the one with no Halloween decorations whatsoever, that, as a matter of fact, appears completely deserted? Dare you ring the doorbell, or should you be satisfied with your bounty of Halloween goodies? If you want the answers to these, as well as many more, disturbing questions.. Join us at The Seanchai Library!

Tonight's stories take place on THE night itself...

A PLAGUE OF MONSTERS
Gus wonders why no one else sees the monsters coming to his door.

TRICK & TREAT
Halloween enthusiast Shelley decorates and buys candy for the big night, hoping for lots of Trick-or-Treaters, but she quickly learns the meaning of the phrase "Be careful what you wish for."

THURSDAY October 11th at 7pm: STAIRWAYS - The Strange Stairs at the Aldebourne Estate

"You mustn’t talk about the stairs"
STAIRWAYS
The Strange Stairs at the Aldebourne Estate

There they stand, surrounded by nothing but forest, pristine as the day they were built. No sign remains of any other structure around them, no ruins of long forgotten buildings. They look… wrong. They feel wrong. Bad things happen if you get too close. Horrible things. Never tell anyone about the stairs!

WEDNESDAY, October 10th at 7pm: A HAUNTING WE WILL GO, with E.F. BENSON

“The narrator, I think, must succeed in frightening himself before he can think of frightening his reader…”
~ E.F. Benson

Caledonia presents E.F. Benson’s “How Fear Departed From the Long Gallery.”

In the competition for Britain’s most haunted house, Church-Peveril beats Hogwart’s Shrieking Shack by several lengths of shrouding linen. Master Anthony, for example, still rides his mare up the front staircase many a night, while great-great-grandmama Bridget occasionally conducts “vague business” by a bedroom fireplace. Don’t speak to her, for she led a “sultry” life, cutting relatives’ throats and disemboweling herself with the axe used at Agincourt.
The present day Peverils are more inclined toward country sports and merriment than the nefarious deeds of their ancestors. But there’s one ghost—or rather three—whom even the Peverils fear.
Join us 'round the fire in The Glen and set your time of day to Midnight, as Cale presents this story, first published in the author's 1912 collection, The Room in the Tower and Other Stories.

TUESDAY, October 9th at 7pm: THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS Continues

“Then there's no point in our being logical, is there?" said Jonathan...

"What do you mean?" said Lewis and Mrs. Zimmerman at the same time.

"I mean," he said patiently, "that we're no good at that sort of game. Our game is wild swoops, sudden inexplicable discoveries, cloudy thinking. Knights' jumps instead of files of rooks plowing across the board. So we'd better play our way if we expect to win.”

~ John Bellairs, The House with a Clock in Its Walls

Orphaned Lewis Barnavelt comes to live with his Uncle Jonathan and quickly learns that both his uncle and his next-door neighbor are witches on a quest to discover the terrifying clock ticking within the walls of Jonathan's house. Can the three of them save the world from certain destruction?'

Faerie Maven-Pralou continues the first of John Bellairs’ Lewis Barnavelt series.
