WEDNESDAY, August 1st at 7PM: More from MYTHOS

THIS WEEK:  The creation of the seasons as the God of the Underworld takes a Wife. Persephone, Hades, Demeter, and Zeus ... some how Zeus is always in there, isn't he?  You'd think he was the King of the Gods, or something!  Oh, wait . . . yeah, right.

The Greek myths are the greatest stories ever told, passed down through millennia and inspiring writers and artists as varied as Shakespeare, Michelangelo, James Joyce and Walt Disney. In Stephen Fry’s hands the stories of the titans and gods become a brilliantly entertaining account of ribaldry and revelry, warfare and worship, debauchery, love affairs and life lessons, slayings and suicides, triumphs and tragedies.

DROWNING WORLD

Political intrigue and strange discoveries on a world covered in nearly perpetual rain.

On the distant planet Fluva, torrential rains that leave it barely habitable also make it a treasure trove of rare botanical specimens. When the human bio-prospector Shadrach Hasselemoga crashes in the remote and deadliest place on Fluva; the Viisiiviisii. The only crew available to search for him is the warrior Jemunu-jah, one of the native Sakuntala, and the immigrant Deyzara trader and experienced pilot, Masurathoo. This culturally different and physically repulsive to each other couple promptly crash also. While the rescuers and the rescued are all slogging it out of the ultimate rain forest, the reptilian AAnn empire is fomenting bloody trouble between the Sakuntula and the Deyzara. This leaves Commonwealth administrator Lauren Matthias in the hot seat, with refugees swarming in to her limited facilities and the bodies of the innocent piling up, with few resources to help. But it's the survivors of the rain forest who bring new knowledge that helps save Fluva, along with quick work by Matthias.

TUESDAY, July 24th at 7pm: more from BRIEF CASES

Corwyn Allen continues sharing selections from Jim Butcher’s 2018 collection of several of his excellent short stories and novellas from within the universe of Harry Dresden.

Why is Harry Dresden so popular? With quotes like these, why wouldn't he be?

You rush a miracle worker, you get lousy miracles!

Growing up is all about getting hurt. And then getting over it. You hurt. You recover. You move on. Odds are pretty good you're just going to get hurt again. But each time, you learn something.

I died. I died and someone made a clerical error and I am in Heaven.

I'd made the vampire cry. Great. I felt like a real superhero. Harry Dresden, breaker of monsters' hearts.

The building was on fire.  It wasn't my fault.

With nowhere to go until assistance for the stricken locomotive arrives, Poirot sets out to discover – did someone board the train in secret to put an end to Ratchett, or was one of his fellow passengers in fact the murderer? And what of Ratchett himself? Was he really all he seemed?

Poirot examines clues, collects evidence, and interviews passengers as Episode 3 of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express continues.

THURSDAY, July 19th at 2pm: FIRESIDE TALES~ "Good Omens"

Caledonia Skytower reads selections from Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s GOOD OMENS: The
Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch.

According to this tome of very specific and very accurate prophecies – written in 1655, shortly before Agnes exploded (which tends to happen when you pack 80 pounds of gunpowder into your petticoats ahead of a mob of self-righteous twits burning you at the stake for being a witch) – the world will end on a Saturday.

Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner. Which some might see as being a bit of a nuisance, really;
particularly an angel, a demon and an 11-year-old boy (himself the subject of a hospital mix-up at birth), all of whom have other plans for the weekend …

In Stephen Fry’s hands the stories of the titans and gods become a brilliantly entertaining account of ribaldry and revelry, warfare and worship, debauchery, love affairs and life lessons, slayings and suicides, triumphs and tragedies.

Through them, you’ll once again fall in love with Zeus, marvel at the birth of Athena, wince at Cronus and Gaia’s revenge on Ouranos, weep with King Midas and hunt with the beautiful and ferocious Artemis.

A mystery discovered this week, in Episode 2 . . .

“Certainly it is serious. To begin with, a murder—that by itself is a calamity of the first water. But not only that, the circumstances are unusual. Here we are, brought to a standstill. We may be here for hours—and not only hours—days! Another circumstance. Passing through most countries we have the police of that country on the train. But in Yugoslavia—no. You comprehend?”  ~ M. THURSDAY July 12th at 7pm: Monsters & Myths - PROCRUSTES pt2

"human friendship, crafty planning, murderous intentions"
Monsters & Myths - PROCRUSTES

Procrustes is the most infamous of those monstrous brigands who made life miserable for travelers along the mountain road from Troezen to Athens. He kept an inn in which there was a special bedchamber with a very special bed. Guests who sought repose there found themselves shackled to the bed frame. He stretches the victim if he is too short, or lops off his feet or head if too long. Procrustes acts in cahoots with his three sons, each of whom practices his own peculiar form of banditry along the mountain road. High adventure, cunning, and suspense are at play when the young hero Theseus is challenged to combat this family of ogres and rid the road forever of their murderous deeds. Here is a stirring tale of youthful confidence and bravery, human friendship, crafty planning, murderous intentions, and sworn vengeance within the turbulent world of myth occupied by heroes, gods, and monsters.

VT and Cale kick off the brand new weekday series at Seanchai Library. This first session will feature two stories by American author Damon Runyon: The Old Doll House" & "A Piece of Pie."

Runyon was best known for his short stories celebrating the world of Broadway in New York City Brooklyn or Midtown demi-monde. The adjective "Runyonesque" refers to this type of character as well as to the type of situations and dialog that Runyon depicted. He spun humorous and sentimental tales of gamblers, hustlers, actors, and gangsters, few of whom go by "square" names, preferring instead colorful monikers such as "Nathan Detroit", "Benny Southstreet", "Big Jule", "Harry the Horse", "Good Time Charley", "Dave the Dude", or "The Seldom Seen Kid". His distinctive vernacular style is known as "Runyonese": a mixture of formal speech and colorful slang, almost always in present tense, and always devoid of contractions. He is credited with coining the phrase "Hooray Henry", a term now used in British English to describe an upper-class, loud-mouthed, arrogant twit.
