THURSDAY August 29th at 7pm: THE BLUE SALT ROAD pt3

"passion and loss, love and violence"
THE BLUE SALT ROAD
by Joanne M. Harris (author of Chocolat)
So begins a stunning tale of love, loss and revenge, against a powerful backdrop of adventure on the high seas, and drama on the land. The Blue Salt Road balances passion and loss, love and violence and draws on nature and folklore to weave a stunning modern mythology around a nameless, wild young man.
Passion drew him to a new world, and trickery has kept him there - without his memories, separated from his own people. But as he finds his way in this dangerous new way of life, so he learns that his notions of home, and your people, might not be as fixed as he believed.

TUESDAY, August 27 at 7pm: CHITTY CHITTY, BANG BANG Continues

So, you think you know the story because of the film? Well, guess again! The famous 1968 film can best be described as being loosely based on the children’s story by Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond.

Fleming’s last novel, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was published posthumously, and initially in three volumes, two months after his death in August 1964. He took his inspiration for the titular car from a series of post-War World I aero-engined racing cars called “Chitty Bang Bang”. They were built by Count Louis Zborowski at Higham Park, in Kent, England, and one of them, the “Higham Special” went on to take the land speed record in 1926 with a speed in excess of 170 mph, after it had been purchased by racing driver J.G. Parry-Thomas specifically for that purpose.

In the book, the car is a Paragon Panther, a powerful 1920s touring car that is restored by Commander Caractacus Pott. At first the car is just that – a powerful 4-seater tourer Pott uses to transport himself and his wife and children around. But then the car starts to exhibit a “personality” and abilities beyond those of any normal motor vehicle. Some of these will be familiar to those who have seen the film, but where the latter options to introduce jealous barons and a wicked Child Catcher, the book offers a more down-to-Earth but equally engaging series of adventures of Commander Pott and his family. (Text borrowed from Inara Pey - thanks Inara!)

WEDNESDAY, August 21st at 7PM: A CYBERPUNK SUMMER Concludes

One More Adventure! . . .

. . . into the shady recesses of Cyberpunk, where low-life and hi-tech combine and collide, and everything generally seems to be going to heck-in-a-cyborg's-handbasket. Yet through these rusted and rusting recesses, a glimmer of hope still lingers, waiting. At least, we THINK it's hope!

Finn Zeddmore concludes her series of journeys into the realms of Cyberpunk, through short stories.
Presented Live in Voice.

TUESDAY, August 20th at 7pm: CHITTY CHITTY, BANG BANG Begins

So, you think you know the story because of the film? Well, guess again! The famous 1968 film is
only "loosely" based on the children’s story by Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond.

In the book, the car is a Paragon Panther, a powerful 1920s touring car that is restored by Commander Caractacus Pott. At first the car is just that – a powerful 4-seat tourer Pott uses to transport himself and his wife and children around. But then the car starts to exhibit a “personality” and abilities beyond those of any normal motor vehicle, in keeping with its enigmatic license plate: "GEN II".

Some of these will be familiar to those who have seen the film, but where the latter options to introduce jealous barons and a wicked Child Catcher, the book offers a more down-to-Earth but equally engaging series of adventures of Commander Pott and his family.

Fleming’s last novel, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was published posthumously, and initially in three volumes, two months after his death in August 1964. Caledonia Skytower presents live, on stream.

WEDNESDAY, August 14th at 7pm: CYBERPUNK SUMMER Continues

More adventures await! . . .

Cyberpunk is a subgenre of science fiction in a futuristic setting that tends to focus on a "combination of lowlife and high tech" featuring advanced technological and scientific achievements, such as artificial intelligence and cybernetics, juxtaposed with a degree of breakdown or radical change in the social order. Much of cyberpunk is rooted in the New Wave science fiction movement of the 1960s and 1970s, when writers like Philip K. Dick, Roger Zelazny, John Brunner, J. G. Ballard, Philip José Farmer and Harlan Ellison examined the impact of drug culture, technology, and the sexual revolution while avoiding the utopian tendencies of earlier science fiction.

TUESDAY, August 13th at 7pm: WORDS & MUSIC - On The Wind

What do you do with a poem that is too long to read at most open microphone events? Expand it into a complete event!

In March of 1984 Ktadhn wrote a set of very short stories for a friend. They were the first of their kind, and everything he'd written since, including poems, has a few rootlets leading back there. The stories were little scenes that burned in his memory, and he wanted to bring them to some kind of new life in words.

"Stories on the Wind" was sparked by the theme of Wind, chosen by people at the Rosehaven open mic for the following week. Kt has many memories of windy days, including one he'd written about in the 1984 stories. That memory joined others in what became a suite of nine poems.

Recently reminded of it by a comment from a friend, Kt has taken another look at the poems, spent time with them, and rewritten everything - adding a tenth vignette and some well considered musical intervals to create a celebration of air and motion.

Ktadhn Vesuvino with poetry and music, live on stream.
