TUESDAY, November 1st at 7PM: DIA DEL LOS MUERTOS!

Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, is a holiday celebrated throughout Mexico, in particular the Central and South regions, and by people of Mexican ancestry living in other places, especially the United States. It is acknowledged internationally in many other cultures. The multi-day holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey.

“He who has gone, so we but cherish his memory, abides with us more potent -- nay, more present -- than the living man.” -- Antoine de Saint-Exupery

“We never bury the dead, son. We take them with us. It's the price of living.” -- Mark Goffman and Jose Molina, “Sleepy Hollow ”

“Our dead are never dead to us, until we have forgotten them.” -- George Eliot

Trolley and Caledonia share tales of this beautiful, soulful holiday, live in voice.

With this posthumously published anthology--a successor to his bestselling Italian Folktales--Italo Calvino, a contemporary surveyor of the otherworldly, pays homage to twenty-six of his nineteenth-century precursors. The resulting volume is both an education in the history of fantastic literature and a rollercoaster ride of wonder and terror, vampires, ghosts, and the rebellious creatures of our own psyches.

Tiptoeing forward, he placed his hand on the doorknob.
As he turned it, slowly and silently, a strange fear gripped him..
GHOSTLY SUSPENSE!

Fear, also, comes in small packages. The short ghost story uses a minimum of elements to captivate the listener, evoking a powerful response before the tenuous air of suspense has a chance to dissipate. Tonight's tales come from a century-and-a-half collection of ghost stories from masters of the genre.

TUESDAY, October 18th at 7pm: FANTASTIC TALES ~ Visionary and Everyday

Trolley shares selections from this excellent anthology, assembled by Italo Calvino.

From Calvino's introduction: "The fantastic tale is one of the most characteristic products of the nineteenth-century narrative. For us, it is also one of the most significant because it is the genre that tells us the most about the inner life of the individiual and about collectively held symbols. . . . the supernatural element at the heart of these stories always appear freighted with meaning, like the revolt of the unconscious, the repressed, the forgotten, all that is distanced from our rational attention."

A collection of short stories from some masters of the craft that is apt for Halloween.
Trolls has the following in her kit bag:

Honore de Balzac - "The Elixer of Life"
Ivan Sergeyevich Turgenev - "The Dream"
Nathanial Hawthorne - "Young Goodman Brown"

Live in voice.

Trolley Trollop returns to the spooky world of author S.E. Schlosser.

"Scream after scream poured from her mouth, but she couldn’t stop herself any more than she could cease wringing her hands. All along the hallway, doors slammed and footsteps came running down the passage."
~ from "Don't Turn On the Lights"

There is no doubt that Schlosser knows how to make a scary story bring chills to any spine.  She travels and collects local legends and translates them from muttered rumor to credible legend.

MONDAY October 10th at 7pm: A SPECTRE IS HAUNTING TEXAS conclusion

A SPECTRE IS HAUNTING TEXAS
- by Fritz Leiber -
In the future, the country of Texas rules most of North America and uses those of Mexican descent as slaves.  To this land of chemically enhanced 8 foot tall Texans comes an equally tall man born in the weightlessness of a Lunar space station.  Our hero is also 8 feet tall, and weighs an awesome 97 pounds, not counting his powered exoskeleton.  In his naivety of Earth politics, he inadvertently becomes the rallying point for a revolution.
Very mildly ribald, with slight racial slurs.   Lots of action, drama and humor.
