WEDNESDAY 30 March at 7pm: An Evening of Saki with Caledonia and Derry

Join Caledonia Skytower and Derry McMahon for some stories by Saki. Some favorites such as "The Occasional Garden" and "Louise" will be presented, along with some new ones. All stories in voice.

Who is Saki? Hector Hugh Munro (18 December 1870 – 13 November 1916), better known by the pen name Saki, was a British writer, whose witty and sometimes macabre stories satirised Edwardian society and culture. He is considered a master of the short story and is often compared to O. Henry and Dorothy Parker. His tales feature delicately drawn characters and finely judged narratives. He was influenced by Oscar Wilde, Lewis Carroll, and Kipling, and himself influenced A. A. Milne, Noël Coward, and P. G. Wodehouse. (Thank you Wikipedia).

Stories in voice, lovely refreshments will be available.

TUESDAY 29 March at 7pm: Isaac Asimov's 'Reason' with Bear Silvershade

Another classic!

The crack robot testing team of Powell and Donovan have their work cut out for them when they are assigned to a robot-controlled space station which supplies energy to the planets via microwave beams. The area is co-ordinated by QT1, the latest and greatest model from U.S. Robotics.

Cutie, as Powell and Donovan call him, was designed with advanced reasoning capabilities – so advanced it reasons space, stars and the planets out of existence, appointing itself as messiah and prophet of the its very own religion…Oh!

POOH BEAR IS BACK! And Caledonia has a fun new twist on choosing just which of the many delightful adventures of "the Bear of Very Little Brain" to read -- and YOU are a vital part of it.

Library Guests will help choose which stories from the canon of author A.A. Milne Cale will read, with the help of a mystical "hunny pot."  The only guarantee is that Cale will be wearing a very funny hat (the sacred Pooh Bear cap) and that there will be sleeping bags everywhere waiting for you, your jammies, and a fuzzy stuffed friend or two.  Probability of cheese is pretty high as well.

Lá Fhéile Pádraig!!

WEDNESDAY, March 16 at 7:00pm : "The Quiet Man"

Yes my friends, it is that time of year again.  It is time for that story again:  Maurice Walsh's The Quiet Man.  It's one of my favorite stories (wriiten by Walsh in 1933), and became one of my favorite movies ( in 1951, winning two Academy Awards).

Sean Kelvin is a quiet, peace-loving man...not above stoppin' for a moment in the fields and just watching the wind blow through the grass, and see the swell of the distant sea.  But there was no mistaking!  Sean was not lazy, just quiet.  But when he falls in love with lovely, read-haired Ellen O'Grady, sister to bullying landowner Big Liam O'Grady, Sean's peace is about to be sorely tested.  And everyone is about to find out just how quiet, and patient a "quiet man" can be.

Presented live in voice with another "warm up" story from Irish literature . . . a great way to get in the mood for St Patrick's Day!

TUESDAY 15 March at 7pm: "Top Chef" and other Foodie stories with Derry

What do literacy and good food have in common?

Find out in this lovely story from South Africa. "Top Chef" is not related to the tv series, but is more enjoyable. Stay tuned after that for "Apple Dumpling" for dessert.

Yummmm.

WEDNESDAY 9 March at 7pm: Rosslyn Guardian and Vintage Paranormal

Imagine Sherlock Holmes meets the X-Files!

Storyteller Rosslyn Guardian begins a series of short stories written in the early 1900's by Englishwoman Dion Fortune. Ms. Fortune was a Kabbalistic Ritualist who, with her group, did esoteric work to combat the occult workings of Hitler during WW II. Meditating through the blitz in London, she later moved to Glastonbury to continue her work.
Although she wrote mostly nonfiction, she did write a few novels, very dated by today's standards, but her real fiction gem was this book of short stories."Secrets of Dr. Taverner"The character of Dr. Taverner is a Holmesian fellow who runs a residential clinic in the English countryside. With a background in esoterics he deals with cases the establishment couldn't touch.
