WEDNESDAY, April 24th at 7:00pm: CELEBRATING URSULA K.LE GUIN

Seanchai Library joins Fantasy Faire's LitFest in celebrating the work of the late Ursula K.Le Guin with two stories from her vast canon of works.

In "CatWings" Mrs. Jane Tabby can't explain why her four precious kittens were born with wings, but she's grateful that they are able to use their flying skills to soar away from the dangerous city slums where they were born. However, once the kittens escape the big city, they learn that country life can be just as difficult!

. . . and  in "The Rule of Names" (as well as in"The Word of Unbinding") Le Guin conveys her initial concepts for the Earthsea realm, most importantly its places and physical manifestation, but not most of the characters appearing in the novels, other than the dragon Yevaud.  Both stories help explain the underpinnings of the Earthsea realm, in particular the importance of true names to magic

A special 90 minute session, with stories presented live in Voice.

MONDAY, April 15th at 7:00pm: More from THE WORLD'S BEST SCIENCE FICTION

WORLD'S BEST SCIENCE FICTION 1969
TONIGHT GYRO MUGGINS PRESENTS

"Dance of the Changer" (by Terry Carr) Are the aliens crazy or just alien?  Is there a difference?

"Fear Hound" (by Katherine MacLean) A detective novel, but this time it isn't "elementary" it's "psychic."

SUNDAY, April 14th at 1:30pm: More from SHERLOCK HOLMES GREATEST HITS

Today we present the third of the top four Sherlock Holmes' Adventures from our recent poll: THE ADVENTURE OF THE EMPTY HOUSE from "The Return of Sherlock Holmes" (1905).

Public pressure forced Conan Doyle to bring the sleuth back to life, and explain his apparently miraculous survival of a deadly struggle with Professor Moriarty. This is the first Holmes story set after his supposed death at the Reichenbach Falls, as recounted in "The Final Problem". "The Hound of the Baskervilles" had seen the return of a pre-Reichenbach Falls Sherlock Holmes, which only served to whet readers' appetites.

Doyle ranked "The Adventure of the Empty House" sixth in his list of his twelve favorite Holmes stories. The story takes place in 1894, three years after "The Final Problem."

Da5id Abbot, Corwyn Allen, Savanah Blindside, and Kayden Oconnell, live on stream in the Library's Fireside Room.

Caledonia presents her story "Two Houses" from A Trio of Irish Tales II.  "It is one of the most complicated short stories I have ever written - in many ways a climax of an emotional four year journey that preceded it," she says.

In "Two Houses" a young American couple on their honeymoon find their ties to Irish heritage are far more insistent than just a simple perusal of genealogies. As the past disturbs their future, Mark and Cate must unravel the mystery of two houses that suffered very different fates, but that are somehow connected. (90 minutes).

SUNDAY, April 7th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME~ Sherlock Holmes' Greatest Hits Continue

Today we present the third of the top four Sherlock Holmes' Adventures from our recent poll: THE ADVENTURE OF THE SPECKLED BAND from "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" (1892).

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson rise unusually early one morning to meet a young woman named Helen Stoner who fears that her life is being threatened by her step-father, Dr. Grimesby Roylott, a doctor who practiced in Calcutta, India and was married to Helen's late mother who was a widow living there. Dr. Roylott is the impoverished last survivor of what was a wealthy but violent, ill-tempered and amoral Anglo-Saxon aristocratic family of Surrey, and has already served a jail sentence in the past for killing his Indian butler in a rage. Helen's twin sister had died almost two years earlier, shortly before she was to be married. Helen had heard her sister's dying words, "The speckled band!" but was unable to decode their meaning. Helen herself, troubled by the perplexing death of her sister, is now engaged, and she has begun to hear strange noises and observe strange activities around Stoke Moran, the impoverished and heavily mortgaged estate where she and her stepfather live.
