MONDAY, September 25th at 7pm: A WIZARD OF EARTHSEA Continues

Written by the American author Ursula K. Le Guin, and first published by the small press Parnassus
in 1968, A Wizard of Earthsea is regarded as a classic of fantasy and children's literature -  widely influencing the entire genre.

Set in the fictional archipelago of Earthsea, the story centers around a young mage named Ged, born in a village on the island of Gont. Displaying great power while still a boy, he joins the school of wizardry, where his prickly nature drives him into conflict with one of his fellows. During a magical duel, Ged's spell goes awry and releases a shadow creature that attacks him. The novel follows his journey as he seeks to be free of the creature.

Gyro Muggins continues the journey, live in voice.

WEDNESDAY, September 20th at 7pm: CALLAHAN'S CROSSTIME SALOON Continues

Corwyn Allen continues selections from Spider Robinson’s 1999 anthology.

A one-of-a-kind bar with a colorful batch of regulars who tell stories, exchange terrible puns, and meet strangers—human and alien alike—who are drawn to this 'saloon' where "shared pain is lessened, shared joy is increased."

Nobody's perfect. But Spider comes pretty damned close.
- Ben Bova

Spider Robinson, winner of three Hugos and a Nebula, was born in the Bronx and raised on Long Island, and has been a Canadian resident for 30 years. Holder of a bachelor's degree in English from the State University of New York, he worked as a folksinger and journalist before publishing his first story in Analog in 1973. He now lives with his wife Jeanne Robinson (co-author of the Hugo- and Nebula-winning Stardance trilogy) on an island outside Vancouver, B.C., where they raise and exhibit hopes.

Eleven of his 31 books are set in Callahan's Place, a fabulous tavern founded by a time traveler, where puns flow as freely as beer, and smell far worse. The most recent is Callahan's Con [Tor July 2003]. He has contributed a regular editorial column, "Future Tense," to Canada's national newspaper, The Globe & Mail, since 1995. In 2000, he released Belaboring the Obviousa CD of original music with the legendary Amos Garrett ("Midnight at the Oasis") on lead guitar.

TUESDAY, September 19th: International Talk Like a Pirate Day!

It's Finally Here!  And we have two sessions featuring original works to celebrate the day:

@ 7PM: GEORGE WAS A PIRATE...
R. Crap Mariner's "Pirate George" canon of 100w stories have become a favorite at Seanchai Library.  Beginning just about a year ago, George has had all manner of misadventure, in story after story.  Tonight Corwyn, Faerie, Kayden, and Caledonia will bravely share George's various pirate adventures, selected randomly from the "George stories," and read "cold" - with no advanced preparation.

@ 8:30PM: METEOR MAGS: Hang My Body on the Pier
In “Hang My Body on the Pier”, a pirate queen's memoirs tell of her rise to power at the end of the golden age of Atlantic piracy. Orphaned, young Magdalena joins a pirate crew that carves a path of destruction along the coast of colonial America.  But as she matures and can no longer pass for a male, she realizes that a woman's place is in the captain's chair. There’s just one thing she needs to do before she can get her own ship… Steal a whole lot of money!

Mags is regular at Seanchai Library events, but this will be the first time she's risen out of the chairs as an author to share this story.  Come along and learn more.  You can also read along with a PDF you can download free of charge from the author at: https://app.box.com/s/3j34gz13xifli542h55pt7r33rojqnjx

Both stories live, in voice.

MONDAY, September 18th at 7pm: A WIZARD OF EARTHSEA Continues

At the Holly Kai Pavilion featuring rocking piratical and nautical tunes from DJ Dano Bookmite.
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Holly%20Kai%20Estates/47/147/23

Buckle on your swash, and your dress eye patch for dancing and delights!
Pirate Sunday benefits Feed a Smile, supporting a school in Kenya founded and run by Brique Topaz 16 years ago through her German-based Live and Learn in Kenya charity. 100 Lindens equals approximately 30 cents in real world currency, which pays for one child’s meal. One third of all money raised for each month's food budget is collected through donations in SL at The Lavender Fields where musicians perform in support of the children.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a parodic holiday created in 1995 by John Bauer ("Ol' Chumbucket") and Mark Summers ("Cap'n Slappy"), of Albany, Oregon, U.S., who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate. The holiday, and its observance, springs from a romanticized, and comic view of the Golden Age of Piracy.  According to Summers, the day is the only known holiday to come into being as a result of a sports injury. During a racquetball game between Summers and Bauer, one of them reacted to the pain with an outburst of "Aaarrr!", and the idea was born.

If one were given the task of creating Spider Robinson from scratch, the best way to do it would be to snatch James Joyce from history, force-feed him Marx Brothers films and good jazz for the better part of a decade, then turn him loose on a world badly in need of a look at itself.

SUNDAY STORIES!

@ 1:30pm TEA TIME at Baker Street

Seanchai Library continues to share tales from The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, the final set of twelve Sherlock Holmes short stories first published in the Strand Magazine between October 1921 and April 1927.

This week: The Adventure of the Creeping Man

The tale is a most peculiar one indeed, and not just for the story itself; The Adventure of the Creeping Man veers somewhat away from Conan Doyle’s usual scientific approach to the unravelling of the mysteries Holmes and Watson face; so much so that it has met with much debate among critics down the years.

Live in voice in the Seanchai Fireside room, downstairs.

@ 6pm: MAGICLAND STORYTIME: The Black Cauldron Continues.

More selections from the first two books in Lloyd Alexander's THE CHRONICLES OF PRYDAIN: "The Book of Three" and "The Black Cauldron." Join the adventures of Taran, Gurgi, Eilonwy and Fflewddur Fflam.

THURSDAY September 7th at 7pm: THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS pt2

"Toils and Dangers of the Wilderness"
THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS

The Last of the Mohicans is set in 1757, during the French and Indian War, when France and Great Britain battled for control of North America. During this war, both the French and the British used Native American allies, but the French were particularly dependent, as they were outnumbered in the Northeast frontier areas by the more numerous British colonists.

WEDNESDAY, September 6th at 7pm: Selections from CALLAHAN'S CROSSTIME SALOON

Corwyn Allen begins selections from Spider Robinson’s 1999 anthology.

The titular saloon is a haven for lost souls; a place where the patrons come for one drink and a chance for a second – but only if they offer an unburdening toast at the fireplace. Mike Callahan, the owner, never judges but sometimes advises in as few words as possible.

In the first story in the collection, Callahan thinks he’s heard it all until one day, The Guy With The Eyes comes in.

He spends an hour nursing his first drink, then steps up to the fireplace and unburdens himself with the news that he’s an alien, a harbinger of doom for Earth, who will be returning home in just a couple of hours. But when he does, his masters will destroy the planet, convinced human kind is a cancer. Only he’s no longer convinced that this is true, and no longer wants to see the world destroyed…

TUESDAY, September 5th at 7pm: ONE SUMMER ~ America 1927 Concludes

We close out this quick excursion into Bill Bryson's look at America in 1927 with stories about President Calvin Coolidge, a man inclined to scowl; he looked, in the well-chosen words of Alice Roosevelt Longworth, as if he had been "weaned on a pickle".  Whereas his predecessor Warren G. Harding had charm but no brains, Coolidge had brains but little charm.

One Summer: America 1927 by Bill Bryson, is a book written with the author's characteristic eye for telling detail, and delicious humor. 1927 was the year America stepped out onto the world stage as the main event, and One Summer transforms it all into narrative non-fiction of the highest order. Join Kayden Oconnell for one final trip through history as seen by Bryson.

SUNDAY, September 3rd at 1:30pm: TEA TIME at Baker Street

The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes continues
THIS WEEK: "The Problem of the Thor Bridge"

Neil Gibson, the Gold King and former Senator from "some Western state", approaches Holmes to investigate the murder of his wife Maria in order to clear his children's governess, Grace Dunbar, of the crime. It soon emerges that Mr. Gibson's marriage had been unhappy and he treated his wife very badly. He had fallen in love with her when he met her in Brazil, but soon realised they had nothing in common. He became attracted to Miss Dunbar; since he could not marry her, he had attempted to please her in other ways, such as trying to help people less fortunate than himself.

Maria Gibson was found lying in a pool of blood on Thor Bridge with a bullet through the head and note from the governess, agreeing to a meeting at that location, in her hand. A recently discharged revolver with one shot fired is found in Miss Dunbar's wardrobe. Holmes agrees to look at the situation in spite of the damning evidence.
