WEDNESDAY, June 28th at 7pm: THE GIRL WHO DRANK THE MOON Continues

Witches, Swamp Monsters, and Dragons!  Oh My! Caledonia Skytower continues Kelly Barnhill’s
2017 Newbery Medal winner.

Every year, the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest. They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town. But the witch in the forest, Xan, is kind and gentle. She shares her home with a wise Swamp Monster named Glerk and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon, Fyrian.

Xan rescues the abandoned children and deliver them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey.

One year, Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic. Xan decides she must raise this enmagicked girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own.

To keep young Luna safe from her own unwieldy power, Xan locks her magic deep inside her. When Luna approaches her thirteenth birthday, her magic begins to emerge on schedule–but Xan is far away. Meanwhile, a young man from the Protectorate is determined to free his people by killing the witch. Soon, it is up to Luna to protect those who have protected her–even if it means the end of the loving, safe world she’s always known..

TUESDAY, June 27th at 7pm: THE ORDINARY PRINCESS Continues

What does "special" look like anyway?

Curling hair, high cheekbones, lyrical voice, alabaster skin, grace, beauty.  These are the blessings of a storybook princess.  But "Princess Amy" is not your typical storybook princess.  What is unique about her, is that she is completely ordinary and unremarkable.  Along with Wit, Charm, Health, and Courage, Princess Amy of Phantasmorania receives a special fairy christening gift: Ordinariness. Why, she might just be you or me!

THURSDAY June 22nd at 7pm: THE SOUTHERN THING

"a rugged, brutal landscape of exquisite beauty"
THE SOUTHERN THING

Stories that demonstrate the tensions between the traditional and the modern, the old and new south, tenderness and violence, man and nature; evoking the heart and soul of this land and its people — men and women inexorably tethered to the geography that defines and shapes them. The focus is regional, but the themes are universal, striking an emotional chord that resonates deep within each of our lives - suspense and myth, hope and heartbreak.

WEDNESDAY, June 21st at 7pm: THE GIRL WHO DRANK THE MOON Continues

"Many books we read when we’re young want to teach us lessons about life. True, the things we learn in them can stay with us forever. But lessons can be so dull. Luckily, Kelly Barnhill’s wonderful fourth novel, “The Girl Who Drank the Moon,” educates about oppression, blind allegiance and challenging the status quo while immersing the reader in an exhilarating story full of magical creatures and derring-do."

TUESDAY, June 20th at 7pm: THE ORDINARY PRINCESS Begins!

Faerie Maven-Pralou begins MM Kaye’s 2002 novel.

In true fairytale style, the seventh princess is blessed with gifts by a host of fairies, but as her father fears, it goes wrong and one slightly bitter fairy ‘blesses’ her with ordinariness.

So no golden curls, stunning beauty and sublime grace for Princess Amethyst Alexandra Augusta Araminta Adelaide Aurelia Anne. Her dark hair and freckles make Amy (no ordinary princess can be called anything else) stop every suitor from pursuing her. She decides to run away and make her own life, away from boring princes and a confined life.

A life in the forest is bliss, but eventually Amy realizes she will need some money, and must find work. So it is that she becomes the fourteenth assistant kitchen maid at a neighboring palace. And there  – much to everyone’s surprise – she meets a prince just as ordinary (and special) as she is!

TUESDAY, June 13th at 1pm: More Adventures from THORNTON BURGESS

Faerie delights us with even more charming animal adventures this week!

Thornton Waldo Burgess, naturalist and conservationist, loved the beauty of nature and its living creature so much that he wrote about them for 50 years. By the time he retired, he had written more than 170 books and 15,000 stories for daily columns in newspapers.

Many of his outdoor observations in nature were used as plots for his stories. In his first book, Old Mother West Wind, published in 1910, the reader meets many of the characters found in later books and stories. These characters include Peter Rabbit, Jimmy Skunk, Sammy Jay, Bobby Raccoon, Joe Otter, Grandfather Frog, Billy Mink, Jerry Muskrat, Spotty the Turtle and of course, Old Mother West Wind and her Merry Little Breezes.

SUNDAY JUNE 11th: A WONDERFUL DAY FOR STORIES!

We have two unique sessions today, so step right up!

~ 1:30pm THE THIN MAN Concludes
At Seanchai Library's Fireside Room at Bradley University
http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Bradley%20University/101/208/28

New York, 1932. Nick Charles, a retired west coast private detective, and his wealthy socialite wife, are in the Big Apple for Christmas. They enjoy witty repartee and banter with one another, and Nora is every inch Nick’s match in wit and intelligence.

Things change when Nick is visited by Dorothy Wynant, the daughter of a former client, businessman Clyde Wynant, who has apparently vanished ahead of his daughter’s wedding. Nick reluctantly – and to Nora’s amusement – agrees to find the missing businessman (the titular Thin Man). But what starts as a search for a missing man quickly turns into the hunt for a murderer after Wynant’s secretary is found dead, with all the evidence points to Wynant himself as her killer.

Corwyn Allen, John Morland, Kayden Oconnell, and Caledonia Skytower conclude Dashell Hammett’s 1933 classic, which became the first in a series of films following Nick and Nora’s adventures, as played by the inimitable William Powell and Myrna Loy.

~ 3:00pm "THE CURIO" at KULTIVATE MAGAZINE'S ANNIVERSARY
On site at "The Curio" Sculpture, at the Celebration on Water Haven

Caledonia Skytower joins Eleseren Brianna with A dyptic of tales based on Ms. Brianna's 2016 virtual sculpture, "The Curio".

When Eleseren created the statue last fall, she  also write a story about "The Curio" in which some 19th Century vacationers come upon its compelling presence deep in the Scandinavian wilderness.  Her story was very much one of observation and supposition, done in the format of a 19th C diary.  She asked Caledonia to consider creating a story from the sculpture's point of view.  And that resulted in the short story "Eternity's Test".  The two stories have only been read together once, and never in the presence of the towering sculpture itself ... until now!

"Missouri to California in 10 days"
THE STORY OF THE PONY EXPRESS

Running only 19 months, "The Pony" helped shape this mighty nation
through some of here most crucial months.

Dozens of applicants vied for jobs, eager to accept the death defying rigors they would soon experience. Mark Twain, who saw the Pony Express in action first hand, described the riders as: "... usually a little bit of a man". Though small in stature, their untarnished record proved them to possess the hearts of lions. History would record that they were among the most durable horsemen to ever straddle a saddle.
