WEDNESDAY, July 31st at 7PM: More Microfiction from Brokali!

Micro Fiction, by nature, is defiant. It defies length, boundaries, and expectations. But tight, provocative fiction requires analysis and editing. Taking an idea and distilling it into a “micro”- cosm of its original self is challenging.
~ Camile Renshaw from "The Essentials of Microfiction"

Come and enjoy more from the Blue Man's store of wonderful original microfiction tales: pointed, poignant, and thought provoking.  Brokali brings a smile to your face with his humor, and may even cause you to sigh a bit.

TUESDAY, July 30th at 7PM: RUFFLES ON MY LONGJOHNS Concludes

Faerie concludes Isabel Edward's adventures in remote Bella Coola Valley in British Columbia with her pioneering husband. Through cold, wind, wet, and unexpected wildlife, the author endures a wild in ways she never expected. One winter turned into fifty!

"Mrs. Edwards has a natural talent for spinning yards about those early days. The people and the land come alive through her reminiscences of a place where lifelines to the "outside" were few and communication with others was often based on need and nearness. It is a delightful tale of how a couple coped with homesteading; a warm and sensitive story by a woman who still lives that peaceful wilderness-edge existence."

MONDAY, July 29th at 7PM: THE BEEKEEPER'S APRENTICE Continues

The year is 1915. Young Mary Russell has just begun a remarkable relationship with the legendary Detective Sherlock Holmes. Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective.

In their first case together, they must track down a kidnapped American senator's daughter and confront a truly cunning adversary--a bomber who has set trip wires for the sleuths and who will stop at nothing to end their partnership.

Full of brilliant deductions, disguises, and dangers, this first book of the Mary Russell--Sherlock Holmes mysteries is "wonderfully original and entertaining . . . absorbing from beginning to end" (Booklist).

SUNDAY, July 28th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME at Baker Street!

"The Return of Sherlock Holmes" continues this week with THE ADVENTURE OF THE NORWOOD BUILDER.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are visited by "the unhappy John Hector McFarlane", a young lawyer from Blackheath who has been accused of murdering one of his clients, a builder called Jonas Oldacre. McFarlane explains to Holmes that Oldacre had come to his office only the day before and asked him to draw up his will in legally appropriate terms. McFarlane saw to his surprise that Oldacre was making him the sole beneficiary, and heir to a considerable bequest at that. McFarlane could not imagine why, although Oldacre claimed that it was due to a prior relationship with McFarlane's mother, which gave him reliable knowledge that McFarlane could be trusted, and a lack of any biological relatives for him to leave his assets to.

Presented Live in Voice with Corwyn Allen and Caledonia Skytower.

WEDNESDAY, July 24th @7:00pm: VACATIONLAND Begins!

On a lake in northernmost Minnesota, you might find Naledi Lodge—only two cabins still standing, its pathways now trodden mostly by memories. And there you might meet Meg, or the ghost of the girl she was, growing up under her grandfather’s care in a world apart and a lifetime ago. Now an artist, Meg paints images “reflected across the mirrors of memory and water,” much as the linked stories of "Vacationland" cast shimmering spells across distance and time.

Sarah Stonich, whose work has been described as “unexpected and moving” by the Chicago Tribune and “a well-paced feast” by the Los Angeles Times, weaves these tales of love and loss, heartbreak and redemption into a rich novel of interconnected and disjointed lives. "Vacationland" is a moving portrait of a place—at once timeless and of the moment, composed of conflicting dreams and shared experience—and of the woman bound to it by legacy and sometimes longing, but not necessarily by choice.

TUESDAY, July 23rd at 7:00pm: THE BEEKEEPER'S APPRENTICE

From New York Times bestselling author Laurie R. King comes the book that introduced us to the ingenious Mary Russell–Sherlock Holmes mysteries.

In 1915, Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the study of honeybees when a young woman literally stumbles into him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old, gawky, egotistical, and recently orphaned, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes--and match him wit for wit. Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective.

THURSDAY July 11th at 7pm: FOLKLORE FROM LAKE ATITLÁN

This 11 million year old lake is surrounded by many villages, in which Maya culture is still prevalent and traditional dress is worn. The Maya people of Atitlán are predominantly Tz'utujil and Kaqchikel
This collection of folklore offers a rich and lively panorama of Mayan mythic heritage. Here are everyday tales of village life; legends of witches, shamans, spiritualists, tricksters, and devils; fables of naguales, or persons who can change into animal forms; ribald stories of love and life; cautionary tales of strange and menacing neighbors and of the danger lurking within the human heart. Whether tragic or comic, fantastic or earthy, whimsical or profound, these tales capture the mystery, fragility, and power of the Mayan world.
