WEDNESDAY, February 1st at 7PM: More from A MONSTROUS REGIMENT OF WOMEN

Caledonia continues Laurie R. King's second adventure in her Mary Russell-Sherlock Holmes series.

The mystery may still fog the facts, like the mist of a London January, but as Mary immerses herself in "The Temple" she gets closer to the truth, or those who know the truth.  Three women killed, whose estates benefit The Temple.  Another one nearly missed joining the others in a murky accident.  Mary is stepping into dangerous territory, as A MONSTROUS REGIMENT OF WOMEN continues.

TUESDAY, January 31st at 7pm: OF MICE AND MEN ~ Part 2

Seanchai Library continues John Steinbeck's original novella text, live in voice. George and Lennie find work on a ranch in the Salinas Valley (CA) and fellow souls who share their dream of owning a little place all their own.

"we’ll have a big vegetable patch and a rabbit hutch and chickens. And when it rains in the winter, we’ll just say the hell with goin’ to work, and we’ll build up a fire in the stove and set around it an’ listen to the rain comin’ down on the roof—

But they also encounter trouble . . .

Shandon Loring, Corwyn Allen, Kayden Oconnell, and Caledonia Skytower, live in voice.
NOTE: Original text includes some language appropriate to the time and place for which the story was written - including racial slurs and cursing. Part 2 of 3, live in voice.

THURSDAY January 26th at 7pm: An Evening with Hemingway, Tolstoi, and Saki

A squeezing of a slice of life into the narrowest of compasses
AN EVENING WITH
Hemingway, Tolstoi, and Saki

The desire to tell stories and to listen to them is one of the qualities inherent in all human nature, and the storyteller’s art is perhaps the oldest of all the arts in the world, and the best-loved. The short story is just the right length in a world of tumult and hurry… The essential quality of the short story is its economy. …here everything must show intensity of concentration, a squeezing of a slice of life into the narrowest of compasses… These stories, diverse as they are, share one thing in common: they all belong to a different time, and that is exactly what constitutes a classic—something recognizably dated, yet still works even after all those years. TUESDAY, January 24th at 7:00pm: A MONSTROUS REGIMENT OF WOMEN Returns

It was way back in September when Caledonia introduced us to author Laurie R. King's second adventure in her Mary Russell-Sherlock Holmes series.

When last we saw Mary, she had infiltrated Margery Childe's "Temple" where much good is taking place, but some things just do not seem right - like a convenient series of deaths that benefit the Temple.  As we rejoin the adventure, Mary is about to get much deeper into the mystery, putting her own life at risk.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 15TH at 1:30pm: TEA TIME at Baker Street ~ Kinda!

Image by achamplin from Deviant Art
We continue our post Virtual Baker Street withdrawal therapy at the hands of a contemporary master, Neil Gaiman.  THIS WEEK: A Study In Emerald.

The story is a Sherlock Holmes pastiche transferred to the Cthulhu Mythos universe of horror writer H. P. Lovecraft. It won the 2004 Hugo Award for Best Short Story. The title is a reference to the Sherlock Holmes novel A Study in Scarlet. "A Study in Emerald" first appeared in the anthology Shadows Over Baker Street, a collection of stories combining the worlds of Arthur Conan Doyle and H. P. Lovecraft; it has subsequently been available as part of Gaiman's short story collection Fragile Things, in the collection New Cthulhu: The Recent Weird, and is available online. The online version takes the form of a Victorian periodical or newspaper, which includes various advertisements that reference characters such as Vlad Tepes, Victor Frankenstein, Spring Heeled Jack, and Dr. Jekyll.

WEDNESDAY, January 11th at 7 pm: More from THE ATROCITY ARCHIVES ~ Part 1

The Laundry Files is a Lovecraftian series of novels by Charles Stross. They mix the genres of spy thriller, science fiction, and Lovecraftian horror. Their main character for the first five novels is "Bob Howard" (a pseudonym taken for security purposes), a one-time I.T. consultant turned field agent. Howard is recruited to work for the British government agency "the Laundry", which deals with occult threats. In this world, computers and mathematical equations are just as useful, and perhaps more potent, than classic spellbooks, pentagrams, and sigils for influencing unseen ancient powers and opening gates to other dimensions. These occult struggles happen largely out of view of the public, as the Laundry seeks to keep the methods for contacting such powers under wraps. There are also elements of dry humor and satirisation of bureaucracy.

While the stories are partially inspired by the Cthulhu mythos universe created by H. P. Lovecraft and others, they are not set in Lovecraft's universe. Stross also decides that in a world where "magic" works, surely the greatest magicians would be scientists who closely study the phenomena; thus his work is replete with a secret history of how various acclaimed researchers of the past also dabbled or stumbled upon occult uses of their work.

Wow!  It's been almost a year since we were last in the Fireside Room.  The 221B Lounge has been packed up and tucked away in Caledonia's inventory.  While we are relieved, we are also kind of going through withdrawal.

Fortunately, we've engaged some superior literature therapy thanks to the brilliant Neil Gaiman.  Today we pay tribute to the Baker Street Build with Gaiman's THE CASE OF DEATH AND HONEY, followed by a tongue-and-cheek nod to the upcoming "Tea Time Mysteries Series" with THE CASE OF FOUR AND TWENTY BLACKBIRDS.

WE'RE A JUST A LITTLE PROUD ...

As all Seanchai folks know, Job #1 at Seanchai Library is to inspire people with stories of all kinds:
short stories, novellas, poetry, across a wide number of genres and styles.  Our sessions are offered freely, without expectation of any kind - Just to enjoy what we share.

Job #2 in our Second Life program has always been to raise consciousness of featured charities, going back to our days at the West of Ireland in SL.  Recently, we shifted some of our operations around, and that necessitated retiring the "Bee Striped" Donation Jar that we have had rezzed since January of 2011.  That inspired us to look back at the fruits of Job #2 - five years of charitable contributions made by Seanchai Library on behalf of its friends and patrons.

Since January 2011 we have passed along $5,122 to 17 different charities featured at Library sessions.  In addition, we have also raised over $1,443 for other charities at "out-board" events we have produced elsewhere in Second Life.  That's just what we can track. The actual figure is more!

So the sharing of stories has raised over $6,565 to organizations doing good all over the planet.  And the most remarkable thing about this is that the average donation to the Seanchai Donation Jar is 8 to 12 cents.

Thank you, everyone, for joining us in this small but meaningful effort.
