SUNDAY, February 24th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME at Baker Street!

Cale & Corwyn continue the journey through The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes this week with THE ADVENTURE OF THE REIGATE SQUIRE.

Watson takes Holmes to a friend's estate near Reigate in Surrey to rest after a rather strenuous case in France. Holmes finds that his services are needed here, but he also finds that his recent illness serves him well. His host is Colonel Hayter.

There has recently been a burglary at the nearby Acton estate in which the thieves stole a motley assortment of things, even a ball of twine, but nothing terribly valuable. Then one morning, the Colonel's butler tells news of a murder at another nearby estate, the Cunninghams'. The victim is William Kirwan, the coachman. Inspector Forrester has taken charge of the investigation, and there is one physical clue: a torn piece of paper found in William's hand with a few words written on it. Holmes takes an instant interest in this, seeing something that Forrester has missed.

Mid-Winter: HAUNTED ALASKA
Tonight is Mid-Winter. The Dead of Winter.
This is it!
In honor of this special night, we will be sharing ghost tales from the frozen north.

They are watching us, these ghosts of the North. They cook breakfast, play cards, mine gold, turn on radios, and play the piano. These astonishing stories tell of miners terrorized by spirits wandering their claims, of roadhouse owners visited daily by ghosts, and of reindeer herders who run in fear as one of their own departed comes back in spirit form to continue his duties after death.

TUESDAY, February 19th at 7PM: More INKSPELL

Author Cornelia Funke is one of today's most beloved writers of magical stories for children. She is the author of The Thief Lord, Dragon Rider, Inkheart, Inkspell, Inkdeath, the Ghosthunters series, When Santa Fell to Earth, and Igraine the Brave. She lives with her family in Los Angeles, California, in a house full of books.

"... Inkspell should serve as a special treat for fans of the first book, as characters from Inkheart who have found themselves in the "real world" (if there is such a thing) find themselves read back into their own mythic, word-spun world--along with some of our favorite "real-world" characters. As with the previous book, Funke's greatest accomplishment here is telling such a rich and involving (and fun!) story, while still managing sweet, subtle commentary on the nature of words and meaning. Expect a tantalizing finale, too--as Funke says, "No reader will forgive me the ending, though, without a part three."

MONDAY, February 18th @ 7pm: GREAT SPEECHES for President's Day

Not all great leaders are great speakers. Luckily, over the years the few that have been have made a remarkable impact on lives, societies, and the causes they championed. Tonight Shandon, Kayden, and Caledonia share a few of those great moments of words that changed minds, hearts, and nations.

Great oratory, great speeches, are brought into being in answer to, or because of, even greater moments in history and time. Often these moments will juxtapose man’s worth and honor, against horrors, evil, and injustice. Sometimes though, the greatest speeches are simply commentaries on a people or a culture, that bring greatness and remembrance of that speech by the truths they contain.  Tonight we feature a selection of the words of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King Jr, John F. Kennedy and more.

SUNDAY, February 17th @ 1:30PM: TEA TIME at Baker Street!

Corwyn Allen continues our journey through The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes this week with THE ADVENTURE OF THE MUSGRAVE RITUAL.

The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual shares elements with two Edgar Allan Poe tales: The Gold Bug and The Cask of Amontillado.

In the story, Holmes recounts to Watson the events arising after a visit from a university acquaintance, Reginald Musgrave. Musgrave visits Holmes after the disappearance of two of his domestic staff, Rachel Howells, a maid, and Richard Brunton, the longtime butler. The pair vanished after Musgrave had dismissed Brunton for secretly reading a family document, the Musgrave Ritual, which dates from the 17th century and is a riddle set in verse form.

THURSDAY February 14th at 7pm: The Courtship of Miles Standish

Set against the backdrop of a fierce Indian war, the tale focuses on a love triangle between three Pilgrims: Miles Standish, Priscilla Mullens, and John Alden. Written in 1856 by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, himself a direct descendant of the Pilgrims. This is a true story handed down orally in the Wadsworth family for generations and is backed by  historical evidence.

WEDNESDAY, February 13th at 7PM: More from QUITE A YEAR FOR PLUMS

Tom Drury of the New York Times said of Bailey White's Novel:

"Bailey White loves names: sasanqua, krummhorn, anhinga, Zephair, Alba Plena, nematode. All appear in this, her first novel. They represent, respectively, a tree, a musical instrument, a bird, an electric fan, a camellia and a roundworm of the phylum Aschelminthes.

"The homely nematode, in fact, inspires one of the best passages in Quite a Year for Plums, a teeming novel of life among the restless and resilient inhabitants of a south Georgia town. Roger, a plant pathologist, has explained to his old friend Hilma that microscopic nematodes occupy ''almost every part of every organism.'' If the earth and its host inhabitants were to suddenly vanish, the remainder, as Hilma imagines it, would be 'the ghost of a gone world, lingering for one second in space and then dissolving into the silvery dust of collapsing nematodes.'

"That well-turned phrase demonstrates the book's clean, strong style and may allude to its abiding concern, or one of them: What if we're living in the ghost of a gone world? What if the useful adzes of our ancestors have become kitsch to be displayed mindlessly in bland restaurants, and the old constricting social arrangements have given way to uncertainty and missed connections?"

More romance, obessive behavior, and that unique brand of small town joy that can only be found in Bailey White's Georgia.  Kayden Oconnell and Caledonia Skytower continue in voice.

TUESDAY, February 12th @ 7:00pm: INKSPELL Continues

What on earth has Meggie gotten herself into?  More importantly, how will she get out of it?

Presenter Faerie Maven-Pralou is reading only one thread of this amazing sequel to Cornelia Funke's Inkheart, and even that twists and turns incredibly.

Funke's trilogy of Inkworld books transports the reader into a world of vivid characters and heightened drama.  The reality of the characters, the motives, and the passions are what gives this series its dynamic, captivating quality.

Faerie continues Inkspell live in voice.

MONDAY, February 11th at 7:00pm: "WHO YOU CALLIN' VALENTINE?" 100 Word Stories with Crap Mariner

None of this Romantic glop!  Long ago, he swore an oath to write a 100 word story every day until the day he died. He's not dead yet. Our dear friend Crap takes a goodly swipe at all the schlock of the heart-full holiday, 100 words at a time.

Always unpredictable and irreverent, no subject is too sacred, no cow too holy for Crap not to pull it out, examine it, and bang it on the table a few times before putting it back where he found it - albeit slightly crumpled.

TUESDAY, February 5th at 7:00pm: INKSPELL Continues

Meggie got what she wanted.  She wanted to see the wonders of Inkworld once more: brilliant fairies, and seemingly sparkling enchantments of nature.  Now she wants to go home.  She needs the author of Inkworld, Fenolgio, the write her back into the real world.  Will he find the words in time?  What other surprises lay around the corner.  For if there is one thing that is certain, it is that in Inkworld nothing happens the way you plan it, and dark forces are always at work, danger always lurks to foil the best laid plans of the purest hearts.

Presented Live in Voice by Faerie Maven-Pralou from the second book in the Inkworld series by author Cornelia Funke.

MONDAY, February 4th at 7:00pm: The Final Installment of NOTWITHSTANDING

Tonight is our last visit to the charming English Village of author Louis de Berniere's memories. It is the "month of romance" and the English air is rife with romance and comings together.

Louis H. P. de Bernières-Smart was born near Woolwich in London in 1954 and grew up in Surrey, the first part of his surname being inherited from a French Huguenot forefather. He was educated at Bradfield College and joined the army when he was 18, but left after four months of service at Sandhurst. He attended the Victoria University of Manchester and the Institute of Education, University of London. Before he began to write full-time he held a wide variety of jobs, including being a mechanic, a motorcycle messenger and an English teacher in Colombia. He now lives near Bungay in Suffolk in a large house.

De Bernières is an avid musician. He plays the flute, mandolin, clarinet and guitar, though considers himself an “enthusiastic but badly-educated and erratic” amateur. His literary work often references music and composers he admires, such as the guitar works of Villa-Lobos and Antonio Lauro in the Latin American trilogy, and the mandolin works of Vivaldi and Hummel in Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.

This week: The Devil and Bessie Mauderfield, Talking to George and possibly more!

SUNDAY, February 3 at 1:30pm: TEA TIME at Baker Street!

Mr. Pycroft is a city clerk and recently he acquired employment with a prestigious brokerage firm called Mawson and Williams. Pycroft gained the position without interview and was instructed to come to the office the following Monday. Almost as soon as he reports for this new position, he encounters strange doings that ultimately draw him from those august halls, into circumstances which require the finely tuned skills of Sherlock Holmes to resolve.
