Shandon's RL home is still inundated with smoke from the wildfires in his region and, breathing being an essential to storytelling, is having to reschedule yet another week.

But our dear Gyro is kicking in with a great Sci-Fi story.  Part of a larger work that stands alone ...“When Harlie Was One” by David Gerrold:  H.A.R.L.I.E. an experimental A.I. program is now one year old.  The story begins with him asking his human mentor, “What will I be when I grow up?”

WEDNESDAY, August 28th at 7:00pm: VACATIONLAND Wraps Up!

Tonight we take our last trip to Naledi Lodge, and the holiday doings around Hatchet Lake. As the summer winds down, so we wind down our trip through the memoried past of summers that once were, and the lives that were affected forever.

"Vacationland is a moving portrait of a place—at once timeless and of the moment, composed of conflicting dreams and shared experience—and of the woman bound to it by legacy and sometimes longing, but not necessarily by choice."

Holmes and Russell are in pursuit of the kidnappers of American Senator Simpson's daughter, Jessica.  Though her parents are understandably a mess, the clues along the trail show that young Jessica has her wits about her, and is doing all she can to leave a trail to be followed by her rescuers.  Will they find her in time?

Caledonia continues with this delightful celebration of the Holmesian detective story by author Laurie R. King. While she will not get through the entire book, she will conclude this adventure and we shall return to more adventures later in the year.

SUNDAY, August 25th at 6:00pm: MAGICLAND STORYTIME - "Just So Stories"

Cale returns to Magicland with a horse of a different color.  Or is it "How the Leopard got its Spots"?  Or "How the Elephant got his Trunk"?  What if it was a "she"?

The Just So Stories are a collection written by the British author Rudyard Kipling. Highly fantasised origin stories, especially for differences among animals, they are among Kipling's best known works.

The Just So Stories typically have the theme of a particular animal being modified from an original form to its current form by the acts of man, or some magical being. For example, the Whale has a tiny throat because he swallowed a mariner, who tied a raft inside to block the whale from swallowing other men. The Camel has a hump given to him by a djinn as punishment for the camel's refusing to work (the hump allows the camel to work longer between times of eating). The Leopard's spots were painted by an Ethiopian (after the Ethiopian painted himself black). The Kangaroo gets its powerful hind legs, long tail, and hopping gait after being chased all day by a dingo, sent by a minor god responding to the Kangaroo's request to be made different from all other animals.

Vacationland is a moving portrait of a place—at once timeless and of the moment, composed of conflicting dreams and shared experience—and of the woman bound to it by legacy and sometimes longing, but not necessarily by choice.

SUNDAY, August 18th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME at Baker Street

THIS WEEK:  "The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist" from THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES

Holmes is contacted by Miss Violet Smith of Farnham, Surrey about an unusual turn in her and her mother’s lives. Violet’s father has recently died, and left his wife and daughter rather poor. However, a notice appeared in the newspaper not much later inquiring as to their whereabouts. Answering it, they met Mr. Carruthers and Mr. Woodley, the former a pleasant enough man, but the latter a churl and a bully. They had come from South Africa, where they had known Violet’s uncle Ralph Smith, who had now also died in poverty and apparently wanted to see that his relatives were provided for. This struck Violet as odd, since she and her family had not heard a word from Uncle Ralph since he'd gone to South Africa 25 years ago. Carruthers and Woodley explained that before dying, Ralph had heard of his brother’s death and felt responsible for his survivors’ welfare.

Carruthers began by offering Violet a job as a live-in music teacher for his ten-year-old daughter at £100 a year, about twice the going rate. She accepted after Carruthers said that she could visit her mother on weekends. That went well until Mr. Woodley came to stay for a week. He made the most oafish, clumsiest sexual advances and boasted that if Violet married him, she would have a life of luxury. He even grabbed her and demanded a kiss, precipitating expulsion by his host, Carruthers. Violet has not seen Woodley since.

The cheated Pryderi assembles his army to get his pigs back from Gwydion.

MONDAY, August 12th at 7PM: More from VACATIONLAND

"What a marvel! Stonich, as always, hits a home run with this chain of short stories or chaptered novel. With her keen observing eye that spares no one, with her air-tight sentences and her seamless introductions of the past, Stonich creates complex characters that are familiar yet surprise you."
 ~ Kathryn Kysar on GOODREADS

"There's something so appealing about an old resort closed down for the season, or closed down forever. As we wander among the cabins and faltering foundations, past the lodge and the camp store, peering into the windows as we go, we always imagine more good times than bad. You can almost hear the ghosts of family vacations -- cook-outs, fishing trips, summer romances, and children squealing joyfully as they run through the long summer nights, well past their bedtimes."
 ~ 'Jeanette' on GOODREADS

Kayden and Caledonia with a new installment this week, live in voice.

SUNDAY, August 11th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME at Baker Street!

"The Adventure of the Dancing Men", one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is one of 13 stories in the cycle collected as The Return of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle ranked "The Adventure of the Dancing Men" third in his list of his twelve favorite Holmes stories. This is one of only two Sherlock Holmes short stories where Holmes' client dies after seeking his help.

Mr. Hilton Cubitt of Ridling Thorpe Manor in Norfolk visits Sherlock Holmes and gives him a piece of paper with this mysterious sequence of stick figures.  The little dancing men are at the heart of a mystery which seems to be driving his young wife Elsie to distraction.

MONDAY, August 5th at 7PM: More from THE BEEKEEPER'S APPRENTICE

It is time for "The Great Detective" Sherlock Holmes and his unlikely apprentice, Mary Russell, to work together on their first case.

A cloud of doom hangs over the local manor house, as its master is subject to unexplained and debilitating fits of illness.  Strangely, these "fits" come upon him when the weather is fine and clear.  The lady of the house - not wanting to believe her husband is deceiving her, but wanting the truth - comes to Holmes to unravel the strange and unexplainable in "Mistress of the Hounds."

From New York Times bestselling author Laurie R. King comes the book that introduced us to the ingenious Mary Russell–Sherlock Holmes mysteries:  Under the reluctant tutelage of the Great Detective, a very modern twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective.  Caledonia live in voice.
