THURSDAY November 30th at 7pm: IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS pt1

" Council for Temporal Studies asks time travelers to save Christmas "
 IN TIME FOR CHRISTMAS
An Out of Time Christmas Novella
part one

At a time when interest in the Christmas holiday was waning, Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol and inspired the world. But now, history is changing, and the book is never written. When the Council for Temporal Studies asks time travelers Simon and Elizabeth Cross to "save Christmas," they think he's joking. But it's anything but a laughing matter. Simon and Elizabeth must go back to 1843 London and convince Dickens to write his endearing story, or the Christmas holiday we all know and love will cease to be--forever.

WEDNESDAY, November 29th at 7PM: More from Tom Hank's UNCOMMON TYPES

Kayden shares more selected stories ...
Do people still use typewriters? Of course they do, and one of our most beloved actors, Tom Hanks, collects them.  He also writes short stories about typewriters in his book, "Uncommon Type: Some Stories".

In "Christmas 1953", Hanks brings us into a warm Christmas Eve family gathering of Virgil Beuell, a World War II veteran who can't shake his war memories of ten years earlier, and in "Our Town Today with Hank Fiset," we see New York through the eyes of a small town columnist.

SUNDAY, November 26th at 1PM: TEA TIME with Charles Dickens

Come join us for the opening events at "The Dickens Project" as we share distinctly un-holiday stories in "Christmas Past."

Bryn Taleweaver will start us off with Dickens' ghostly The Signal-Man. The railway signal-man of the title tells the narrator of a ghost that has been haunting him. Each spectral appearance precedes a tragic event on the railway on which the signalman works. When there is danger, his fellow signalmen alert him by telegraph and alarms. Three times, he receives phantom warnings of danger when his bell rings in a fashion that only he can hear. Each warning is followed by the appearance of the spectre, and then by a terrible accident.

Caledonia and Kayden will follow up with Chapter 2 from Oliver Twist. Charles Dickens's second novel, it was first published as a serial 1837–39. The story centers on orphan Oliver Twist, born in a workhouse and sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker. After escaping, Twist travels to London, where he meets "The Artful Dodger," a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets led by the elderly criminal, Fagin.

Oliver Twist is notable for its unromantic portrayal by Dickens of criminals and their sordid lives, as well as for exposing the cruel treatment of the many orphans in London in the mid--19th century.  In this early example of the social novel, Dickens satirizes the hypocrisies of his time, including child labour, the recruitment of children as criminals, and the presence of street children. The tale was among the early success that built Dickens' reputation as a popular author.

Stories told in voice, and followed from 2-4pm by "Dancing in Past" with DJ Dano Bookmite.

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 23rd at 10am: ALICES RESTAURANT MASSACREE

ALICE'S RESTAURANT REVISITED
The song is one of Arlo Guthrie's most prominent works, based on a true incident from his life that began on Thanksgiving Day 1965 with a citation for littering, and ended with the refusal of the U.S. Army to draft him because of his conviction for that crime. The ironic punch line of the story is that, in the words of Guthrie, "I'm sittin' here on the Group W bench 'cause you want to know if I'm moral enough to join the Army - burn women, kids, houses and villages - after bein' a litterbug." The final part of the song is an encouragement for the listeners to sing along, to resist the draft, and to end war.

The "song" is in fact a spoken monologue, presented by Shandon Loring today for your listening pleasure or just to groan at and be Thankful when it's over.

CHANGE OF PLAN ... we previously announced tonight's session as selections from Robert Aspirin's Myth Adventures.  But Kayden has come upon something else that he's just busting to share, so Kayden presents . . .

Uncommon Type

by Tom Hanks

Do people still use typewriters? Of course they do, and one of our most beloved actors, Tom Hanks, collects them.  He also writes short stories about typewriters in his book, "Uncommon Type: Some Stories".  He loves how a typewriter makes your words permanent. A character in one of his stories says, "Make the machine a part of your life. Typewriters must be used. Like a boat must sail. What good is a piano you never play?" Join us for "These are the Meditations of my Heart" about a young woman who finds hope in a junked typewriter, and "Steve Wong is Perfect" about a guy who bowls three perfect games and wishes he hadn't.

TUESDAY, November 14th at 7pm: A Selection from A CONNECTICUT YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR'S COURT

1889 frontispiece by Daniel Carter Beard
In Mark Twain's 1889 novel, a Yankee engineer from Connecticut is accidentally transported back in time to the court of King Arthur, where he fools the inhabitants of that time into thinking that he is a magician, and soon uses his knowledge of modern technology to become a "magician" in earnest, stunning the English of the Early Middle Ages with such feats as demolitions, fireworks, and the shoring up of a holy well. He attempts to modernize the past, but in the end he is unable to prevent the death of Arthur and an interdict against him by the Catholic Church of the time, which grows fearful of his power.

The American humorist wrote the book as a burlesque of Romantic notions of chivalry after being inspired by a dream in which he was a knight himself, severely inconvenienced by the weight and cumbersome nature of his armor.

Caledonia shares selections from the novel's early chapters, live in voice.

TUESDAY, November 7th at 7pm: Selections from TALES FROM THE WHITE HART

Tales from the White Hart is a collection of short stories by science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke, in the "club tales" style.

The style and nature of the stories was inspired by the Jorkens stories of the writer Lord Dunsany, whom Clarke admired and with whom he corresponded, a fact humorously acknowledged by Clarke in his introduction to the first Jorkens omnibus volume.

According to Clarke's preface to the book, the book was his third collection of short stories, which were written between 1953 and 1957 in such diverse spots as New York, Miami, Colombo, London and Sydney.

Corwyn Allen shares some selected stories, live in voice.
