  • We sent hundreds of dollars to a number of featured charities during the year
  • Seanchai Library was featured in the November 16th Episode of Designing Worlds
  • We were also featured in the December Issue of Windlight Magazine

2016 is going to be all that, and more!

WEDNESDAY, December 30th at 7pm: THE FOLLOWING SHOES ARE A GIFT FROM THE POPE

Shoe worn by Pope Benedictus XV, made in
the late 19th C and worn in the early 20th C
It's time for the last story of the year at Seanchai - and what a year it has been!  So Caledonia has chosen to share a memorable adventure from fellow indie-author MJ McGalliard (The Beggar's Day Series) involving absurdist humor, saints, shoes, and a Pope who thinks outside the box, even in the bathtub.  75 minutes, and every moment is worth it.

Note: if you take your Catholicism very seriously, you might want to give this story a miss - irreverent, though not blasphemous - as it takes a view of the faith that is filled with ironic humor.

Caledonia Skytower, live in voice.

TUESDAY, December 29th at 7pm: Connie Willis' EPIPHANY

No, Christmas has passed, but this is a story that transcends a singular yuletide holiday.  Trolley shares "Epiphany" from multiple Hugo and Nebula Awards, Connie Willis, in which three modern-day wise men embark on a quest unlike any they've ever experienced

About Epiphany:

Also known as Three Kings' Day, it is a Christian feast day that celebrates the revelation of God the Son as a human being in Jesus Christ. In Western Christianity, the feast commemorates principally (but not solely) the visit of the Magi to the Christ child, and thus Jesus' physical manifestation to the Gentiles. Moreover, the feast of the Epiphany, in some Western Christian denominations, also initiates the liturgical season of Epiphanytide.

In Italy, Epiphany is associated with the figure of the Befana (the name being a corruption of the word Epifania), an broomstick-riding old woman who, in the night between 5 and 6 January, brings gifts to children, and/or a lump of "coal" (really black candy) for the times they have not been good during the year. The legend told of her is that, having missed her opportunity to bring a gift to the child Jesus together with the Three Wise Men, she now brings gifts to other children on that night.

MONDAY, December 28th at 7:00pm: SCIENCE FICTION ADVENTURES w/GYRO

Science Fiction-Fantasy includes a broad spectrum of fictional possibilities - as many as there are stars in the galaxy.  Gyro takes us careening once more into that world where possibility meets probability, and we are challenged to take a deeper look not only at what might be, but at what actually is.

IT'S BEEN A REMARKABLE YEAR . . .

From our appearances at a variety of conferences, the development of our Kitely and InWorldz branches, the pilot EXPLORE project (The Great Gatsby), the move to Bradley U, our feature in Designing Worlds and December's Windlight Magazine, the 2015 edition of The Dickens Project. . . it has just been a heck of a year! And 2016 promises more to come.

And these are achievements shared by all who value the work of the Library.  Seanchai is not just one or two people, or even the dozen or more who comprise our volunteer staff.  Seanchai Library is about people who value stories, the oral tradition of sharing them, and who appreciate the potential of virtual worlds (a primarily visual medium) for exploring them - bringing them to life.

The holiday calendar this year means we have some awkward breaks in the weekly schedule ... while we are all taking a deep breath with friends and family, please enjoy the stories in the December issue of Prim Perfect Magazine - two of which were shared by folks who frequent Seanchai . . .

From Dickens, once more . . .
"He had no further intercourse with Spirits, but lived upon the Total-Abstinence Principle ever afterwards; and it was always said of him that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge. May that be truly said of us, and all of us! And so, as Tiny Tim observed, God bless Us, Every One!"

WEDNESDAY, December 23rd at 7pm: THE NIGHT BEFORE, THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

It is fine old Seanchai Library tradition, going back to our days as the West of Ireland Library and Cultural Center.  We gather round the Yuletide fire on the night before the Even of Christmas and share festive tales of the season.

"Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse."

Trolley, Kayden, and Caledonia (and you never know who else!) with original stories, classics.  Pour yourself a cup of cheer and join in the holiday fun.

Presented live in voice.

TUESDAY, December 22nd at 7PM: A CHILD'S CHRISTMAS IN WALES and Other Tales

"A Child's Christmas in Wales" is a prose work by the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Originally emerging from a piece he wrote for radio, recorded by Thomas in 1952, the story is an anecdotal retelling of a Christmas from the view of a young child and a romanticized version of Christmases past, portraying a nostalgic and simpler time. It is one of Thomas's most popular works.

"All the Christmases roll down towards the two-tongued sea, like a cold and headlong moon bundling down the sky that was our street; and they stop at the rim of the ice-edged, fish-freezing waves, and I plunge my hands in the snow and bring out whatever I can find."

Aoife Lorefield presents along with John B. Keane's "Curriculum Vitae," live in voice.

MONDAY, December 21st at 7:00pm: ESCAPE CLAUSE with Gyro Muggins

“ESCAPE CLAUSE”
by Rod Serling
1962
ISBN: 978-0962344732
A hypochondriac makes a deal with the devil.  Now he has eternal youth and cannot be harmed by any means; what could go wrong?

Mean-spirited, abusive hypochondriac Walter Bedeker sells his soul to the devil (appearing as a rotund rogue who calls himself "Ted Cadwallader" here, as he likes the way the name rolls off his tongue) in exchange for immortality, adding enough conditions to keep him out of Cadwallader's clutches forever. To Bedeker's surprise, Cadwallader readily agrees to his demands, only stipulating an escape clause which allows Bedeker to choose the time of his death if he tires of being immortal.

THURSDAY, December 17th - THREE HOURS OF STORIES FOR THE HOLIDAYS

At The Dickens Project
A CHRISTMAS CAROL: Staves Four & Five - "The Last of the Spirits" & "The End of It"

Spirit moved it seemed to scatter gloom and mystery."

@ 8 pm ~ AN IRISH VILLAGE CHRISTMAS
at Seanchai Libraries in Second Life, Kitely, and InWorldz

Shandon shares tales from Alice Taylor's collection of stories.  The Irish countryside is like an archetype of everyone's ideal Christmas landscape: a world where the season came with holly bundles and real geese for the holiday dinner.

The magic of Christmas was out in the moonlit haggard with the cattle and down the fields with the sheep but most of all it was here in the holly-filled kitchen with the little battered crib under the tree and the tall candle lighting in the window. The candle was the light of Christmas and the key that opened the door into the holy night.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL: Stave Three - "The Second of Three Spirits"
"Awaking in the middle of a prodigiously tough snore, and sitting up in bed to get his thoughts together, Scrooge had no occasion to be told that the bell was again upon the stroke of One. He felt that he was restored to consciousness in the right nick of time, for the especial purpose of holding a conference with the second messenger dispatched to him through Jacob Marley's intervention. "

A CHRISTMAS CAROL: Stave Two - "The First of Three Spirits"
"When Scrooge awoke it was so dark, that, looking out of bed, he could scarcely distinguish the transparent window from the opaque walls of his chamber. Along with his senior partner, Dr. O'Reilly, they have their hands full dealing with seasonal coughs and colds, and bringing tidings of comfort and joy to their patients and the town.
