WEDNESDAY, May 29th @ 7PM: MORE MICROFICTION!

He's baaaaaaack!  Brokali returns to share more Microfiction: poignant, humorous, thoughtful. He quells rumors, creates them, and sets to rights the biggest rumor of all: is he publishing?

MicroFiction is loosely defined as anything that is 2000 words or less (not to be confused with Drabble which is 100 words).  Brokali shares his delightful sense of humor and his dedication to this form with a buffet of micro gems, Presented Live in Voice.

TUESDAY, May 28th @ 7PM: THE CITY AND THE STARS (Part 2)

Gyro continues to share this classic bit of Science Fiction. A novella from legendary author Arthur C. Clarke - "The City and the Stars" takes place a billion years in the future, in the city of Diaspar. By this time, the Earth is so old that the oceans have gone and humanity has all but left. As far as the people of Diaspar know, they are the only city left on the planet. The city of Diaspar is completely enclosed. Nobody has come in or left the city for as long as anybody can remember, and everybody in Diaspar has an instinctive insular conservatism. The story behind this fear of venturing outside the city tells of a race of ruthless invaders which beat humanity back from the stars to Earth, and then made a deal that humanity could live - if they never left the planet.

MONDAY, May 27th @ 7PM: EXIT- The Endings That Set Us Free

Caledonia shares one more installment from Dr. Sara Lawrence-Lighfoot's book about the importance of endings in our lives.  On this Memorial Day (in the U.S.), she shares some of the hardest endings of all, and how they can become celebrations and victories.

"Author, Scholar, and Sociologist Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot is enthralled by exits: long farewells, quick goodbyes, sudden endings, the ordinary and the extraordinary. There’s a relationship, she attests, between small goodbyes and our ability 'to master and mark the larger farewells.'”

DONATIONS AWAY to Project Children!

We are so pleased to be sending our modest contribution to Project Children once more.  This wonderful, grass-roots charity goes way back to our own beginnings in (c) Second life as The West of Ireland Library and Cultural Center.  Suffice it to say that we cannot ever give enough to support this effort so dear to our hearts: Peace being built one child at a time.

THURSDAY May 23rd at 7pm: NEVADA - TRUE TALES FROM THE NEON WILDERNESS

Sensational images of casinos and bordellos contrast dramatically with the desolate desert. But scratch through the neon surface of Nevada, and discover a fascinating reality. There are people here. And where people go, stories spring up behind them like wildflowers after a rare desert rain.
These tales expose the verities in this state of contradiction as only true stories can. The unusual characters are real. The uncommon events happened as described. A book as unique as the places & people it describes.

WEDNESDAY, May 22nd @7:00pm: CRAP IS BACK!

Long ago, he swore an oath to write a 100 word story every day until the day he died.  He's not dead yet.

100w stories ("Drabble") are an incredible writing exercise in economy and precision.  Like the poetic form haiku, it forces the writer to be very specific as each word, each syllable counts - literally and figuratively!  Here is Crap's composition from Friday, May 17th (last week)

"Before I ever read Dickens’ Oliver Twist, I saw a tape of the 1969 musical.
I find musicals stupid. People burst into song over the strangest shit. Everybody dances and spins and laughs and leaps.
Did something get in the water supply? A gas leak making everybody loony?
A little chasing, a little murder, and we find Fagin fumbling his wealth into the muck.
Poor guy. Oh well.
Later on, I read the book.
They hanged him?
Dude. Harsh.
I put the book back on the shelf, sigh, and load up the DVD.
Perhaps musicals aren’t so stupid after all."

Sometimes looney, sometimes abrasive, sometime thoughtful, always delightful!  Live in Voice.

Caledonia continues with more selections from Sarah Lawrence-Lightfoot's newest work - poignant, touching, soul-felt stories that touch who we are and how we bring a close to chapters large and small in our lives.

SUNDAY, April 19th @ 10am: SHANDON ABOARD THE SS GALAXY

Shandon presents more tales of Sea and Surf at the Story Meadow of the SS Galaxy: The beach is a no-man's-land, the coastal zone a dynamic give and take of land and sea, swell and tide. The nomadic peoples indigenous to this fluid land scape belong to the global tribe of surfers. For surfers the swells, currents, and the curling folds of waves are elements of a natural language. Today: tales of truth, fiction, and fantasy - each a glimpse into life on this sweet and ragged edge of beauty.

Ivan has a plan to save Ruby from a life alone in a cage.  Join Caledonia as she concludes presenting this year's Newbery Medal winner. It's no secret why this book won the medal!

"How Ivan confronts his harrowing past yet stays true to his nature exemplifies everything youngsters need to know about courage. … Utterly believable, this bittersweet story, complete with an author's note identifying the real Ivan, will inspire a new generation of advocates."
- Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"This book will break your heart—and then, against all odds, mend it again. Such a gentle fantasy is rare; such an evocation of our need to grow, to be free, to become our best selves, is rarer still. In cheering for Ivan and his friends, we cheer for our own humanity and our own possibilities. Read this."
- Gary D. Schmidt, National Book Award finalist, Okay for Now

"Kindness and its ability to change lives shines through on every single page of this book. … Katherine Applegate's beautiful, life-affirming story will soar directly from Ivan's heart into your own."
- Kathi Appelt, Newbery Honor author of The Underneath

"A beautifully written, intelligent, and brave book. You will never look at the relationship of humans and animals in the same way again. Quite simply, this story is life-changing."

MONDAY, May 13th @ 7pm: EXIT: The Endings that Set Us Free

Caledonia reads from Sarah Lawrence-Lightfoot's newest work.

Author, Scholar, and Sociologist Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot is enthralled by exits: long farewells, quick goodbyes, sudden endings, the ordinary and the extraordinary. There’s a relationship, she attests, between small goodbyes and our ability “to master and mark the larger farewells.”

In EXIT, her tenth book, she explores the ways we leave one thing and move on to the next; how we anticipate, define, and reflect on our departures; our epiphanies that something is over and done with.

Caledonia shares selections, live in voice.

THURSDAY, May 9th at 7pm: The Boyhood of William Wallace

THE BOYHOOD OF WILLIAM WALLACE
aka Braveheart

It was once said... "Of course it doesn't have a happy ending, it's an Irish Fairytale". Well the real life legends of Scotland may be much the same. Tonight, a recount of the boyhood of William Wallace (aka Braveheart), and the events that set him on the path to historical and legendary fame.

TONIGHT:
In the 13th century, after several years of political unrest, Scotland is invaded and conquered by King Edward I of England (called "Longshanks").
Young William Wallace witnesses the treachery of Longshanks, survives the death of his father and brother, and is taken abroad by his uncle where he is educated.

THE REST OF THE STORY:
Years later, when he returns home, Wallace falls in love with his childhood sweetheart, Murron MacClannough, and they marry in secret so that she does not have to spend a night in the bed of the English lord, per the rite of Primae Noctis. When an English soldier tries to rape Murron, Wallace fights off several soldiers and the two attempt to flee. But Murron is captured and publicly executed by the sheriff, who proclaims "an assault on the King's soldiers is the same as an assault on the King himself." In retribution, Wallace begins on his crusade to win Scotland its' freedom from the English.

THURSDAY, MAY 2nd at 7:00pm: UPPITY WOMEN OF ANCIENT TIMES0

UPPITY WOMEN OF ANCIENT TIMES
PIRATES, PYRAMID BUILDERS, POETS, POISONERS, PANDERERS, POWER BROKERS, AND PRINCESSES
These women's stories have been winkled out of a vast array of historical and literary sources, often contradictory, hostile, inaccurate, or incomplete. Thankfully a huge body of non-literary evidence exists in letters, court cases, artwork, coins, memos, and more. Slowly, women became 'people whose consent mattered'. These stories distill what women of long ago fought for, and today's women continue to claim.
