THURSDAY JANUARY 31st at 7pm: A Pirate Looks at Fifty - Jimmy Buffett

A PIRATE LOOKS AT FIFTY
Jimmy Buffett & Cuba

An excerpt from Jimmy Buffett's book on
the philosophy of his own life.
(and of course a little music)

Now he lives in the islands
Fishes the pilin's
And drinks his Green Label each day
Writing his memoirs, losing his hearing
But he don't care what most people say
Cause through eighty-six years of perpetual motion
If he likes you, he'll smile and he'll say
Jimmy, some of it's magic, some of it's tragic
But I had a good life all the way

When the visitor, Mr. Grant Munro  returns, Holmes and Watson hear the story of Munro's deception by his wife Effie. She had been previously married in America, but her husband and child had died of yellow fever, whereupon she returned to England and met and married Munro. Their marriage had been blissful — "We have not had a difference, not one, in thought, or word, or deed," says Grant Munro — until she asked for a hundred pounds and begged him not to ask why.

THURSDAY JANUARY 24TH at 7PM: Timeless Tales of Gods & Heroes - Love Stories

Timeless Tales of Gods & Heroes
Love Stories

February arrives early?? No, but anytime is a good time for love stories.

The world of Greek & Roman mythology was not a place of terror for the human spirit. It is true that the gods were disconcertingly incalculable. One could never tell where Zeus’ thunderbolt might strike. Nevertheless, the whole divine company were entrancingly beautiful with a human beauty, and nothing humanly beautiful is really terrifying. The early mythologists transformed a world full of fear, into a world full of beauty.

Tonight:  Four Chickens, Library Picnic, Early Music and Ashes!  Presented Live in Voice.

TUESDAY, January 22nd @ 7:00pm: More from INKSPELL

Inkspell  was named the 2006 Book Sense Book of the Year in the Children's Literature category.

What the "experts" say ...
  • Publishers Weekly - In this spellbinding follow-up to Inkheart, Funke expertly mixes joy, pain, suspense and magic.
  • Kirkus Reviews - Funke delivers more than enough action, romance, tragedy, villainy and emotion to keep readers turning the pages-and waiting for the sequel the cliffhanger ending promises.
  • School Library Journal (Sharon Rawlins) - This 'story within a story' will delight not just fantasy fans, but all readers who like an exciting plot with larger-than-life characters.
According to The New York Times, a film adaptation was announced, with a release date of July 3, 2013 in 3D

BITS AND BOBS!

LIBRARIAN EMERITUS ...  As many of you know, Derry McMahon founded the Seanchai Library (its original name being the West of Ireland Library and Cultural Center) in March of 2008.  After over four years of building and maintaining a program she has stepped back her participation to pursue other interests on the grid, including her burgeoning talent as a visual artist through virtual photography, and spending time with her partner Bear Silvershade (also a retired member of the Seanchai core staff).  She stays a part of the Seanchai family, and she and Bear will still be presenting stories at the Library or other venues as opportunities seem appropriate. Chief Storyteller Shandon Loring, and Lead Caledonia Skytower will continue the good work begun by Derry.

Thank you Derry for all the years and all the hours of diligent work, seen and unseen, bringing stories to life in Second Life!

DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS ... In honor of Derry's retirement to "Emertius", the January- February featured charity was "Derry's Choice" instead of the review process the staff usually use.
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) works in nearly 70 countries providing medical aid to those most in need regardless of their race, religion, or political affiliation.  As always presentations at Seanchai are free to all residents. Those who wish to show their appreciation, if they desire, may join us in donating to our featured charity.

SEANCHAI REVIEWED! Aoifee Loon is a long time Seanchai lover who recently published this review of the Library in the MetaBizList Directory.  Her review was added to recently by CW Washborne.  Check them out!

THURSDAY, January 17th @ 7pm: IN THE BEGINNING ~ SCOTLAND

Basalt Pinnacles - Scotland, by Jim Richardson
Caledonia presents from Nigel Trantor's "The Story of Scotland" ... a work that blends history, folklore, and storytelling to weave a complex tale of the the mystic fogs from which the rich heritage and lore of Scotland was born.

Scotland's story cannot be told merely in terms of documentary evidence, for this would be to neglect an integral part of the nation's heritage. The legends, myths, stories and memories handed down from generation to generation must be added to the bare bones of factual record if the character of the country is to be truly revealed.

Presented Live in Voice.

WEDNESDAY, January 16th @ 7pm: QUITE A YEAR FOR PLUMS Continues

"Bailey White's dry, low-key drawl is a familiar (and welcome) sound to millions of National Public Radio regulars. On the radio, her intimate vignettes of small-town life are loosely held together by their subjects, who are themselves tightly held together by love, family, and idiosyncrasy. This episodic mode suits her just as well as a novelist. In this audio version of Quite a Year for Plums--which, aside from the occasional bit of atmospheric banjo music, features none but the author's voice--even the temporary denizens of her fictional southern Georgia town have their oddities. A bird artist is obsessed by a vanishing breed of chickens. Another character dreams obsessively of typography. The permanent townsfolk include a woman who believes in little spacemen, a pair of bookish retired schoolteachers, and plant pathologist and banjo picker Roger Meadows, whose peers would like nothing better than to see him settle down with the right woman."
 -- Amazon.com Review

Kayden returns tonight with more from this delightful gem, and has invited Caledonia to join him.  Romance - fleeting and formative - is in the air, as are the woodpeckers!  Presented Live in Voice.

TUESDAY, January 15th @ 7pm: INKSPELL ~ Part 2

Just a few chapters into Inkspell, Mo (a.k.a. "Silvertongue") sagely says to his daughter, "Stories never really end, Meggie, even if the books like to pretend they do. Stories always go on. They don't end on the last page, any more than they begin on the first page."

Inkspell should serve as a special treat for fans of the first book, as characters from Inkheart who have found themselves in the "real world" (if there is such a thing) find themselves read back into their own mythic, word-spun world--along with some of our favorite "real-world" characters. As with the previous book, Funke's greatest accomplishment here is telling such a rich and involving (and fun!) story, while still managing sweet, subtle commentary on the nature of words and meaning.  -- from Paul Hughes, Amazon.com Review

Join Faerie Maven-Pralou tonight for more adventures with Meggie and company in the world of stories!  Presented Live in Voice.

Based on Louis de Bernières' recollections of the village he grew up in, Notwithstanding is a funny and moving depiction of a charming vanished England.

A year has passed, and Meggie now lives in Elinor's house along with Darius and her parents, Mo and Resa. Anyone who has read the best-selling Mama Makes Up Her Mind or listened to Bailey White's commentaries on NPR knows that she is a storyteller of inimitable wit and charm. Meet serious, studious Roger, the peanut pathologist and unlikely love object of half the town's women. Meet Roger's ex-mother-in-law, Louise, who teams up with an ardent typographer in an attempt to attract outer-space invaders with specific combinations of letters and numbers. And meet Della, the bird artist who captivates Roger with the sensible but enigmatic notes she leaves on things she throws away at the Dumpster.

Kayden Oconnell begins this series of selections in voice tonight, to be joined by Caledonia later in the month.

WEDNESDAY, January 2nd @ 7PM: An Original Irish Tale

Cover Art by Derry McMahon
Liam is a typical 21st Century teenager - he is so totally "wired" to his gadgets and the internet, that his family rarely sees his face, just top of his forehead.  He seeks his truths on the internet  Family circumstances change, and Liam's family relocates to Ireland to take care of his paternal Grandmother who is recovering from an accident.  Suddenly Liam is thrust into world that seems steeped in myths and legends, and finds himself bumbling into conflict with a pooka (pouca) over the "Pooka's Share" and the rascally spirit demands the respect it is due as the Shadow at the Gate.

A child of the diaspora, author Judith Cullen (Caledonia Skytower) grew up with stories told about her father and his Irish family.  Recently making a radical career shift, she has begun to craft short stories inspired by those tales, and by members of her own family in celebration of her Celtic roots. Shadow at the Gate will be one of three original stories epublished by her in the new year in the first of a series of "Trio" story collections: A Trio of Irish Tales.

Presented Live in Voice.
