WEDNESDAY, March 16th at 7pm: THE QUIET MAN ~ A Seanchai Tradition

It's that time of year again, and we cannot let *The Day Itself* (St Patrick's Day, that is) pass us by without a nod to a tradition we have observed since 2009 - the reading of  Maurice Walsh's THE QUIET MAN.

"Shawn Kelvin, a blithe young lad of 20, went to the States to seek his fortune. And 15 years thereafter he returned to his native Kerry, his blitheness sobered and his youth dried to the core, and whether he had made his fortune or whether he had not no one could be knowing for certain. For he was a quiet man, not given to talking about himself and the things he had done. A quiet man, under middle size, with strong shoulders and deep-set blue eyes below brows darker than his dark hair - that was Shawn Kelvin."

Thus begins Walsh's original short story as it was published in the Saturday Evening Post in February of 1933.  It was subsequently revised and published with other Walsh stories of the same era, the characters and contents of which were molded by Director John Ford and Screenwriter Frank S. Nugent over more than a decade into the 1952 Academy Award-winning motion picture starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, and Victor McLaglen.

Caledonia Skytower presents The Quiet Man , live on stream in Ceiliuradh Glen.

THURSDAY March 10th at 7:00pm - 8:30pm: Irish Legends - THE BATTLE OF CLONTARF

"Irish Legends"
THE BATTLE OF CLONTARF

PLEASE NOTE:
Tonight's presentation is a fictionalized account of a historically accurate event.
Thematic Elements include war, violence, bloodshed, & death. It is the end of the era of gods and warrior kings. With the victory of Christian King Brian over the enslaving Vikings, at the cost of their own lives, Ireland is freed from bondage and increasingly left in the hands of former slaves. Odin himself makes an impressive and doomful appearance, actively aiding and abetting this changing of the guard. Tonight's Story is a fictionalized version of the Battle of Clontarf (1014), with doomful visions and fantasy elements. While the historical facts of the battle are accurate, they are not the most important parts of this story. The protagonist is Conn the Thrall, who fights alongside Turlogh Dubh O'Brien, who is an outcast from Brian Boru's clan. From the superb, and very rare, book "Dark Mind, Dark Heart", an anthology August Derleth. It was released in 1962 by Arkham House in an edition of 2,493 copies. (and Shandon has a copy!!)
Tonight's Story will be 90 minutes
