It's Carol Week at The Dickens Project - one of the most incredible weeks in our annual calendar. We'll be at the The Dickens Project in Second Life all week, presenting Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol in a different section each day, multiple times a day. Every session, a different trio of readers will present, accompanied with sound effects from Dagmar Kohime (turn your sounds on!)

The Setting: There's been a terrible storm at sea and a ship laden with goods has foundered and in sinking.

It's to salvage the goods on board! But is everyone there on the up and up? Some of these characters might not be helping the authorities but instead "salvaging" valuables right into their own pockets!

It's a tragedy ... for the ship owners. But with all the hustle and bustle, there's a bit of a party atmosphere.

Before you know it, there's music and dance and drinking and eating and all kinds of goings on!

[Choose your character as you prefer or contact Aoife Lorefield to ask for suggestions!]

Corwyn Allen performs sea shanties and other songs from 6-7 pm SLT.
Aoife Lorefield keeps the music going, spinning Irish and other tunes.

Period dress is requested for this event. This area outside Fezziwigs is not fancy, though, so come all ye urchins and other down at heels types! Some clothing can be found at the shops in Dickens Square.

@ 1pm slt: Idle Rogue Productions presents THE MIDNIGHT DINNER.
THE FINAL PERFORMANCE. An outstanding concept in dance entertainment as story-telling, presenting beloved characters from Dickens and Victoriana. Please enjoy the experience of attending in costume at The Opera House, free clothing is available in the stores at ground level.

There will be a direct teleport from the Dickens Square landing point. Or teleport directly to The Opera House sky box. There's one other option, though, that is worth considering. Take the hot air balloon ride from the shores of the skating pond just north of The Square. In 20 minutes you'll find yourself at the front door of the Opera House.

Seating begins at Noon, and seats will fill fast for this show.

It is NOT a riding horse, but a sweet companion who will trot by your side, adding that extra bit of Equine cuteness to you day.

The Setting: The Lady Agatha is hosting a Tea Dance in honor of her niece, a younger daughter of the Earl of Marshwold, the Lady Helen who has just become affianced to the Hon. Charles Smithington-Smythe, a wealthy young gentleman of the ton.

Many of the Upper Ten Thousand have been invited but what are these rumors swirling around? Some are saying Smithington-Smythe is not who he says he is! And even worse, that he has been seen paying his attentions to other ladies, if such they be!

Lady Agatha wants to believe that this is the work of jealous matchmaking mama's who wanted the man for their own paltry daughters. But can she? Is there really something wrong?

Gossip will be happening! Come and add your share!

A Christmas Tale pt2

An unusual, moving, and memorable Christmas story. Two children—Conrad and his little sister, Sanna—set out from their village high up in the Alps to visit their grandparents in the neighboring valley. It is the day before Christmas but the weather is mild, though of course night falls early in December and the children are warned not to linger. The grandparents welcome the children with presents and pack them off with kisses. Then snow begins to fall, ever more thickly and steadily. Undaunted, the children press on, only to take a wrong turn. The snow rises higher and higher, time passes: it is deep night when the sky clears and Conrad and Sanna discover themselves out on a glacier, terrifying and beautiful, the heart of the void. Rock Crystal was written in 1845 by Austrian writer Adalbert Stifter, about two missing children on Christmas Eve. It has been called "a suspenseful, simple, myth-like story with majestic depictions of nature. A quiet and beautiful parable about the relation of people to places; of man to nature." The author was said to be "one of the most extraordinary, the most enigmatic, the most secretly daring and the most strangely gripping narrators in world literature." It was translated from German to English in 1945. The story has been adapted to film and TV several times.

Tonight Aoife returns with a reading of a favorite Christmas tale from poet Dylan Thomas. Come experience the wonders of this time through his childhood memories.

Sheriff Walt Longmire is reading A Christmas Carol in his office on December 24th when he's interrupted by the ghost of Christmas past: a young woman with a hairline scar across her forehead and more than a few questions about Walt's predecessor, Lucian Connally. Walt is at loose ends on Christmas Eve and he agrees to help her.

@ 1:30pm - TEA TIME with Charles Dickens in Dickens Square. Da5id Abbot, Dubhna Rhiadra, and Caledonia Skytower present a selection from David Copperfield.

David Copperfield has a primary theme of growth and the changes that occur on the way to maturity. In addition, Dickens included many aspects of Victorian Era life that he wanted to highlight or wished to change, which were primarily integrated into the story, using satire as one device. The plight of prostitutes and the attitude of middle class society to them, the status of women in marriage, the rigid class structure, are aspects that he highlighted, while the system for handling criminals, the quality of schools, and the employment of children in the fast-spreading factories of the 19th century were aspects he wished to influence, to change for the better.
