Role Play Activities

The Urchins return to The Dickens Project this year with expanded plans for role play.

The Dickens Project is an immersive, light-hearted recreation of Dickens' London focused on A Christmas Carol.

We invite you to create adult characters who can become part of Dickens' London and find ways to participate. These new characters can interact with urchins, visitors, and each other as we move into all the events this year's Dickens Project has to offer.

Urchins in Dickens' London

This game offers ways to explore the lives of poor children in Dickens time and create characters. As an urchin, you can find coins, food, gifts, and treasure–spending (and losing) those things–and interacting with other urchins as well as other characters and visitors.

We invite you to:

Create a character. This does not require a new avatar. The hud folder includes a titler you can add (an invisible prim over your head that displays your character name).

The folder also includes ideas and landmarks for creating a free or low-cost urchin character.

Interact in character. When you see other urchins, talk to them, create a scene or storyline with them. If you see visitors, especially those in Victorian dress, try interacting with them as well, with the understanding they may not choose to role play with you.

Use this game to learn more about what role play can offer you!

Adult Characters in Dickens London

Victorian London teemed with folk from all over the world who followed a wide variety of lifestyles. There were sailors, dockhands, innkeepers, farmers, bakers, shop owners and staff, chemists (pharmacists in the US), librarians, and more.

You are invited to visit The Dickens Project in character and interact with others! This can be as simple as dressing the part, and then speaking and acting in character.

We also have a number of shops and other locations that would benefit from characters associated with them. If you want to be a groom or stablehand at the Dickens Project stable (for example) or a waitress at the tea shop, contact Aoife Lorefield inworld.

This year, a series of role play events will be offered. All are welcome to attend, and, we encourage Victorian style of dress and a willingness to be a role!

Some Basics for Role Play

Describe only your own actions, reactions, thoughts, and feelings. Don't tell anyone else what their experience is. Wait for them to tell you, then decide how to respond.

"Kit grabs an apple from the basket and slips it into his pocket, hoping his friend Cat doesn't notice."

Not this: "Kit grabs an apple and smiles to himself, knowing his friend Cat hasn't seen what he'd done."

Describe open-ended actions or situations. Let the others add to what's happening.

Say this: "Kit sees a spark jump from the fire in the barrel and land on the wooden shack. 'Hey! A spark there! he says."

Not this: "Kit sees a spark jump from the fire in the barrel and land on the wooden shack. In a few seconds, the entire shack is engulfed in flames. There doesn't seem to be any way for them to escape!"

There is a difference between speaking in character (IC) and out of character (OOC). While playing the game, stay in character as much as possible.

If you need to talk to someone OOC, go to IM. If you need to log quickly, or there is something relevant for others to know, OOC in local chat is fine. Indicate OOC comments by putting double parentheses around your text marks it as OOC.

Good RP: "Kit hears the beadle approaching and knows that guy is after him. He gets ready to run, fast! (RL is calling, gotta go, thanks and bye.)"

Have fun!
