TODAY: The Thin Man

The Thin Man is a 1934 American pre-Code comedy-mystery directed by W. S. Van Dyke and based on the 1934 novel of the same name by Dashiell Hammett. The film stars William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles, a leisure-class couple who enjoy copious drinking and flirtatious banter. Nick is a retired police detective who left his very successful career when he married Nora, a wealthy heiress accustomed to high society. Their wire-haired fox terrier Asta was played by canine actor Skippy. In 1997, the film was added to the United States National Film Registry having been deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

TODAY: The 39 Steps

Today's radio adaptation was based on the 1935 British thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll. It is very loosely based on the 1915 adventure novel The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan. It concerns an everyman civilian in London, Richard Hannay, who becomes caught up in preventing an organization of spies called "The 39 Steps" from stealing British military secrets. After being mistakenly accused of the murder of a counter-espionage agent, Hannay goes on the run to Scotland and becomes tangled up with an attractive woman while hoping to stop the spy ring and clear his name.

The Maltese Falcon is a 1941 American film noir written and directed by John Huston in his directorial debut, based on the 1930 novel of the same name by Dashiell Hammett, and indebted to the 1931 movie of the same name. The story follows a San Francisco private detective and his dealings with three unscrupulous adventurers, all of whom are competing to obtain a jewel-encrusted falcon statuette.

TODAY: The Philadelphia Story  (Note: Today's session will last approximately 1:20)

The Philadelphia Story is a 1940 American romantic comedy film directed by George Cukor, starring Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, James Stewart, and Ruth Hussey. Based on the 1939 Broadway play of the same name by Philip Barry, the film is about a socialite whose wedding plans are complicated by the simultaneous arrival of her ex-husband and a tabloid magazine journalist. The socialite character of the play—performed by Hepburn in the film—was inspired by Helen Hope Montgomery Scott (1904–1995), a Philadelphia socialite known for her hijinks, who married a friend of playwright Barry.

Nominated for six Academy Awards, the film won two: James Stewart for Best Actor, and Donald Ogden Stewart for Best Adapted Screenplay. MGM remade the film in 1956 as a musical, retitled High Society, starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, and Frank Sinatra.

The Philadelphia Story was produced by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, and was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1995.

SUNDAY, October 4th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME with "The Shadow"

 

The TEA TIME crew presents episodes from the classic radio show at The Ledge Story and 

Dance Space, at Haunted Hollow in the first session of a three week series.  

Originally created to be a mysterious radio show narrator, The Shadow was developed into a distinctive literary character in 1931 by writer Walter B. Gibson.

The Shadow debuted on July 31, 1930, as the mysterious narrator of the radio program Detective Story Hour, which was developed to boost sales of Street & Smith's monthly pulp Detective Story Magazine. When listeners of the program began asking at newsstands for copies of 'that Shadow detective magazine', Street & Smith decided to create a magazine based on a character called The Shadow.

On September 26, 1937, The Shadow, a new radio drama based on the character as created by Gibson for the pulp magazine, premiered with the story "The Death House Rescue", in which The Shadow was characterized as having 'the power to cloud men's minds so they cannot see him'. In the magazine stories, The Shadow was not given the literal ability to become invisible.

The introductory line from the radio adaptation of The Shadow - 'Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!' - spoken by actor Frank Readick, has earned a place in the American idiom. These words were accompanied by an ominous laugh and a musical theme, Camille Saint-Saëns' Le Rouet d'Omphale ("Omphale's Spinning Wheel," composed in 1872). At the end of each episode, The Shadow reminded listeners that 'The weed of crime bears bitter fruit! Crime does not pay. The Shadow knows!' (However, some early episodes used the alternate statement, 'As you sow evil, so shall you reap evil! Crime does not pay... The Shadow knows!'

Death on the Nile is among Agatha Christie’s best-loved and most famous works - a sweeping mystery of love, jealously, and betrayal. Agatha Christie drew inspiration for this novel from her travels in Egypt, picking up geographical and historical details throughout her travels there.

Death on the Nile first published in the on 1 November 1937, and in the US by the following year. The UK edition retailed at seven shillings and sixpence (7/6) and the US edition at $2.00. The full length novel was preceded (1937) by a short story with the same title, but with Parker Pyne as the detective. The details of the short story's plot are substantially different, though the settings and some of the characters are very similar. The novel features the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot.

"Wait a darn minute!  That's not Dickens!"  No it's not.  Robert Louis Stevenson was a good 40 years Dickens' junior, and lived 20 years beyond.  Yet among other things, they have this one thing in common: despite all the lengthy and popular works of fiction that both men authored, the one that was their best seller, the one known all around the world, the one that has embedded itself into western culture, was not one of the big works.  The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (published in 1886 at 27,622 words) was Stevenson's big hit!  Not unlike how A Christmas Carol (published n 1843 at 28,944 words) was Dickens'.
