Seanchai Library Update: Stories, Birthdays, & Stuff

 

It's March, and already we're back in the story-reading business after our Standard winter hiatus.

Shandon thrilled with a new story, The Seanchai's Shadow, and Caledonia has been charming with Allen Levi's Theo of Golden. 

THIS WEEK, Theo of Golden will continue on Tuesday, March 17th (St. Patrick's Day!) at 7pm slt. Following immediately will be a Library tradition, the annual presentation of Irish author Maurice Walsh's short story The Quiet Man. Seanchai Flicks on Wednesday night March 18th will screen the Academy Award-winning 1951 film based on the short story at 7pm slt.

Seanchai Library's Birthday Celebration has been postponed (due to Rl doing that RL thing) till Sunday afternoon, April 12th. Mark your calendar and plan on joining us to celebrate stories in The Glen at 1pm that day.

SEANCHAI Spring Sessions to Begin!

 

We're baaaaack!

Starting Tuesday, May 20th at 7pm slt, Spring Stories will begin and continue through June.  Presenters will include Caledonia Skytower, Fayleen Belois, and Finn Zeddmore, plus it will mark the return (very soon) of Russell Eponym's weekly Tuesday Noon music-story sessions.

Caledonia kicks off the sessions with Jane Yolen's short verse novel Finding Baba Yaga, live in the Glen.  A young woman discovers the power to speak up and take control of her fate—a theme that has never been more timely than it is now…

A harsh, controlling father. A quiescent mother. A house that feels like anything but a home. Natasha gathers the strength to leave, and comes upon a little house in the wood: A house that walks about on chicken feet and is inhabited by a fairy tale witch. In finding Baba Yaga, Natasha finds her voice, her power, herself.

  It's back!

The newest Seanchai special project celebrates the work of American author Ray Bradbury. It follows the path of eight boys on an adventure to save the life of their friend on Halloween Night. Guided by the mysterious Mr. Moundshroud, they travel through time and space, learning about different cultures, and how each views and deals with death.

Thanks to continuing support from Linden Lab, this year's Bradbury Project will be on its own dedicated region, with content at terrain level and in skyboxes.

Caledonia has been reading stories live in SL for 16 years, mostly at Seanchai Library. Tonight she presents some stories as requested by those attending story sessions in the last week. What will she read?  From a popular author like Neil Gaiman? Or a classic author like Nathaniel Hawthorne? Or maybe someone entirely new?  Only one way to find out!

While the world has changed since the first days that the man we knew as Dr. Seuss first penned his whimsical tales, much of his canon of work is part of many of our young lives. Somehow the world would not quite be as bright a place if a mysterious cat might not knock on our doors unexpectedly, bringing excitement and danger to a boring day with the assurance, "Your Mother will not mind if you do!"

OPENING OCTOBER 6th: The Bradbury Project *NEW* from Seanchai Library

 
Seanchai Library is proud to announce the newest edition to its Special Projects Series. These literature-immersive experiences allow guests to walk in the footsteps of the characters that inhabit the world of a work of fiction: exploring environments inspired by the words of the story, and hearing those words presented live. The best known of these is the popular holiday tradition The Dickens Project. Inspired, in part, by Charles Dickens’ 1843 novella A Christmas Carol this project will return to Second Life ® for its 2023 Edition in December. The newest project is focused on the work of American author and screenwriter, Ray Bradbury, and features his short story “The Halloween Tree.” The Bradbury Project will open on October 6^th and remain open through November 16^th.

NOTE: This project features an experience-based teleport system introduced at The Dickens Project in 2022. "We are really excited about this one. It taps into an enthusiasm for Halloween that many of our regular community shares. The story addresses how we think about and deal with death in a way that is healthy, I believe," said Caledonia Skytower of Seanchai Library. "We get as immersed in creating our projects as we hope our guests do in experiencing them. But there is something special about this one. There is so much farther we could take it, and that is inspiring."  The Bradbury Project is patterned after the popular Dickens Project and follows the path of eight boys on an adventure to save the life of their friend on Halloween Night.

Yeah! It's time to dust off your sandals, flip-flops, and freshen up those shorts and sun-dresses for the imminent months of sunshine and warmth.

We've taken shorts on in a different way. We've combed through lists of "the best" or "the greatest" short stories in the English language (one list was 500 entries long!  Seriously!). We've created a list of our own, and included some short stories that are "our favorites". We'll be sharing them live at the various outdoor venues at our #SecondLife home on Nowhereville. 

We'll provide the lemonade and some "picnic-ables." Join us fireside!

    The Martians have landed!  But no one believes the incredible, unbelievable truth - that there's life out there beyond our atmosphere, and that it might not be so very friendly.  Join Bear Silvershade, Caledonia Skytower, Derry McMahon, Aoife Lorefield, Zander Greene, Kayden Oconnell, and Shandon Loring for this Sci-Fi treat, first read by Seanchai Library in 2009.

    @1pm: The Storyteller's Sandbox hosted by Dubhna Rhiadra, at Ceiliúradh Glen.
Seanchai Library has always been about more than just what happens on our home parcel.  Over our ten year history we have continually made connections, provided opportunities and resources to the greater spoken word community.  We've invited some of our friends from across the grid to join us for one final Volume 10 gathering around the fire, to share stories and poems.

Take a stroll through A Decade of Seanchai Library, a retrospective wander from our beginnings in the West of Ireland, through our years with the Community Virtual Library, our expansion to the Kitely Grid, to the present time.  Images, artifacts, media links all come together to share the story of telling stories.  This exhibit will remain open through the end of the month, so there's still time to walk through the caverns and tunnels of a decade.

AND the Volume 10 Quest will also stay up through the end of March.  There's still goodies to find and surprises to be found by exploring the clues of this light-hearted, fun adventure.  Find instructions at the Seanchai Library main landing point and let your quest begin.

Pirate Sunday benefits Feed a Smile, supporting a school in Kenya founded and run by Brique Topaz 16 years ago through her German-based Live and Learn in Kenya charity. 100 Lindens equals approximately 30 cents in real world currency, which pays for one child’s meal. One third of all money raised for each month's food budget is collected through donations in SL at The Lavender Fields where musicians perform in support of the children.

International Talk Like a Pirate Day is a parodic holiday created in 1995 by John Bauer ("Ol' Chumbucket") and Mark Summers ("Cap'n Slappy"), of Albany, Oregon, U.S., who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate. The holiday, and its observance, springs from a romanticized, and comic view of the Golden Age of Piracy.  According to Summers, the day is the only known holiday to come into being as a result of a sports injury. During a racquetball game between Summers and Bauer, one of them reacted to the pain with an outburst of "Aaarrr!", and the idea was born.
