THURSDAY September 1st at 7pm: Monsters & Myth - THE NEMEAN LION pt1

"Only she can prevent the darkness from engulfing the world"
THE NEMEAN LION pt1

The world’s fascination with monsters harks back to the dawn of civilization – and even to prehistoric times – when mankind first sought to explain the magical and capricious forces of nature.

Civilized as the ancients were, the stories they told were filled with horrifying creatures. They called them monsters, and there was nothing civil about them. From Anteus, the bloodthirsty cannibal giant, to Hecate, the beautiful, ambitious tormentor of the dead, to the ogre Fafnir, whose guests for dinner become his dinner, the monsters of mythology embody the dark side of human nature. Their battles with Ulysses, Jason, and the other heroes and heroines of legend represent the ongoing contest between all that is worst, all that is best, and all that stands in between.

Tonight we feature the Nemean Lion, a murderous beast who terrorizes the people of Nemea with his ivory-dagger teeth, brass talons, and impenetrable armor hide. But Nemea is merely a practice ground for the lion; his true task is to serve Zeus, King of the gods, who needs a special monster to destroy the latest threat to his rule: a sickly, undersized child destined, the god-king has warned, to shake his entire kingdom.

Unaware of heroic fate, the tine Palaemona falls in love with Melampus, the healer, who can revive the dead and save them from an eternity in Tartarus under Hades’ brutal reign. But the healer’s betrayal and Palaemona’s yearning for his love soon lead her to the grotesque Bullman, who employs bulls to savagely tear his victims in half, shredding their skin and bones, spilling their blood like fertilizer across his furrowed land. The Bullman quickly prepares Palaemona for a similar end – one that would leave this ancient time desperately short of heroes.

Caught between a world she so much wants to love and a world she is terribly unsure of, a young girl struggles to find the answers that lie just beyond her reach. Surrounded by treacherous gods, enormous killer bees, and leather-winged demons, she must face one of the most frightening creatures to ever walk the land: the Nemean Lion. Standing alone, this brave young girl is the only one who can prevent the darkness from engulfing an already fragile world.

@1:30PM: REMEMBERING KTADHN

We lost a friend on August 18th - one who touched many lives.  For those who wanted to, but were not able to attend the community memorial on Saturday, or the remembrance last night at Seanchai, a moment in The Glen to honor Ktadhn Vesuvino.

@7PM: THE LAST CUENTISTA - Concludes

There lived a girl named Petra Peña, who wanted nothing more than to be a storyteller, like her abuelita.

But Petra’s world is ending. Earth has been destroyed by a comet, and only a few hundred scientists and their children – among them Petra and her family – have been chosen to journey to a new planet. They are the ones who must carry on the human race.

Hundreds of years later, Petra wakes to this new planet – and the discovery that she is the only person who remembers Earth. A sinister Collective has taken over the ship during its journey, bent on erasing the sins of humanity’s past. They have systematically purged the memories of all aboard – or purged them altogether.

Petra alone now carries the stories of our past, and with them, any hope for our future. Can she make them live again?

Caledonia Skytower read Donna Barba Higuera’s 2021 winner of the  Newbery Medal and Pura Belpré Award.  Presented live on stream.

SUNDAY, August 28th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME with Dame Agatha

EVIL UNDER THE SUN Continues . . .

It seems that no matter how hard he tries, Hercule Poirot never quite gets a holiday. This story sees him in Devon, Agatha Christie’s home county, and, of course, among the scantily clad sunbathers, a murdered woman is found.

It was not unusual to find the beautiful bronzed body of the sun-loving Arlena Stuart stretched out on a beach, face down. Only, on this occasion, there was no sun… she had been strangled. Ever since Arlena’s arrival at the resort, Hercule Poirot had detected sexual tension in the seaside air. But could this apparent ‘crime of passion’ have been something more evil and premeditated altogether?

Holidays Can Be Murder!

Enter the world of Christie's 1941 novel at a seaside resort:  the Jolly Roger Hotel, inspired by Burgh Island on the Devonshire coast of England. The reading series continues, live on stream. Today: Episode Two "Murder is in the Air"

THURSDAY August 25th at 7pm: Monsters & Myth - THE CALYDONIAN BOAR pt2

"Impending evil, friendships & hope, battles & blossoming love"
THE CALYDONIAN BOAR pt2

The Calydonian Boar - A ferocious wild beast able to trample a warrior to bloody rags beneath its razor hooves. The boar is the handiwork of Artemis, goddess of the moon, who created it using mud from the River of Tears, where the strong wind caries the shrieks of the tormented, and hungry vultures hover like gulls. Artemis's monster ravages the land, carrying out the vain goddess's evil plan to randomly destroy mortal after mortal.

Meanwhile, a small child soon to be Artemis's main rival in strength and beauty is being raised in the hills by a family of bears. The wild child,Atalanta, grows into a mighty huntress who staunchly defends her animal family at any price. When one of her brothers is killed Meleager, heir to the throne of Calydon, she becomes immersed in a complicated struggle for love and power that involves not Meleager and herself, but also the king and queen of Calydon, the queen's two idiot brothers, a murderous band of outlaws, and a ferocious Simba hound that becomes Meleager's ally and best friend. But at the center ofit all stands the Calydonian boar, the most dangerous and threatening beast inthe land.

The tale of the Calydonian boar takes place in a world where no one is safe from impending evil. But it is also a world in which friendships grow and hope triumphs, as a huntress and her prince bravely battle against gods and beasts in order to protect their blossoming love.

THURSDAY, August 11th: Wit & Adventure on the Story Floor

@7pm - KEEP IT BRIEF with R. Dismantled

One of Seanchai Library's oldest friends and supporters returns to the Story Floor to "Keep It Brief" sharing 100 word stories from his vast canon of compositions.

Always unpredictable and irreverent, no subject is too sacred, no cow too holy for R. not to pull it out, examine it, and bang it on the table a few times before putting it back where he found it - albeit slightly crumpled. Long ago, he swore an oath to write a 100 word story every day until the day he died. He's not dead yet. And no, he never has opinions! http://oneadayuntilthedayidie.com/

@9pm - SEANCHAI LATE NIGHT  with Finn Zeddmore

Finn returns to her late night SL slot with more Sci-Fi short stories from a variety of sources. What adventure will she take us on this time?

Both sessions presented live, in SL Voice at the Main Seanchai Library space.

MONDAY, August 1st at 7pm: DANDELION WINE Continues

Caledonia Skytower presents more adventures into summer from this Bradbury classic.

The summer of '28 was a vintage season for a growing boy. A summer of green apple trees, mowed lawns, and new sneakers. Of half-burnt firecrackers, of gathering dandelions, of Grandma's belly-busting dinner. It was a summer of sorrows and marvels and gold-fuzzed bees. A magical, timeless summer in the life of a twelve-year-old boy named Douglas Spaulding—remembered forever by the incomparable Ray Bradbury.

Presented LIVE at the firecircle.
