WEDNESDAY, May 29th at 7:00pm: 100w STORY PODCAST 14th Anniversary!

Story writer, story-teller, commentator, raconteur – R. Crap Mariner is all of these, and more.

On May 31st, 2005, after being inspired by both a friend and Woody Allen to write 100-word stories  – or “drabbles” – he created the 100-word Story podcast, promising to write a story a day until the day he dies.

Fourteen years on, Monsieur Mariner is still writing  – and still reading his stories in what is quite probably among the longest-running daily podcast of original material in the world.

Regardless of what the poster image looks like, he's not dead yet (and we are VERY glad of that!).

Seanchai Library is delighted to host the 14th anniversary of the 100-word story podcast, for one of our oldest friends on the grid. R. Crap read from his stories, which will cover a wide range of topics, just like his podcasts. There might even be a George the Pirate story or two.

R. Crap Mariner, still  alive, in Voice.

TUESDAY, May 28h at 7:00PM: CRENSHAW Begins

In her first novel after winning the Newbery Medal, Katherine Applegate delivers an unforgettable and magical story about family, friendship, and resilience.

Jackson’s parents are in serious financial trouble; their stressful circumstances are taking a toll on Jackson. Mum and dad remain cheerful and upbeat, putting on a happy face for their kids, but Jackson is not fooled. He knows times are bad and, whether he likes it or not, Crenshaw the giant cat is here to help him through the worst of it.

Crenshaw is not only very large, he’s both outspoken and imaginary. He has come back into Jackson’s life to help him. But is an imaginary feline enough to save Jackson and his family from losing everything?

Author Katherine Applegate proves in unexpected ways that friends matter, whether real or imaginary. Caledonia presents, live on stream.

SUNDAY, May 26th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME at Baker Street

Back to Holmes & Watson!  The Tea Time Crew is joined this week by friend Elrik Merlin.

THIS WEEK: "The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans" The monotony of thick smog-shrouded London is broken by a sudden visit from Holmes' brother Mycroft. He has come about some missing, secret submarine plans. Seven of the ten pages — three are still missing — were found with Arthur Cadogan West's body.

West was a young clerk in a government office at Royal Arsenal, Woolwich, whose body was found next to the Underground tracks near the Aldgate tube station, his head crushed. He had little money with him (although there appears to have been no robbery), theatre tickets, and curiously, no Underground ticket. The three missing pages by themselves could enable one of Britain's enemies to build a Bruce-Partington submarine.

In a rare appearance, Sherlock's brother Mycroft is an active participant, and the initiator of this case.  Seven years elder, Mycroft wields great power and influence with the national and international machinations of Britain.  Holmes says to Watson, "One has to be discreet when one talks of high matters of state.  You are right in thinking that he is under the British government.  You would also be right in a sense if you said that occasionally he IS the British government."

Da5id Abbot, Elrik Merlin, Kayden Oconnell, and Caledonia Skytower present the adventure, live on stream from the Seanchai Fireside Room.

first published in 1912.

WEDNESDAY, May 22nd at 7:00pm: A TRIP DOWN UNDER with Ktadhn Vesuvino

We are going up top (The Glen) for a trip Down Under.

Les Murray's poems were read at several recent open microphone sessions in memory of his passing. Ktadhn got a book of his poems, "New Selected Poems," and walked to the beach to do some reading. He like his way of writing, like looking through clear water into his world. Tonight he'll be reading some of Murray's poems, and playing music by various Australian performers.

SUNDAY, May 19th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME on The Lighter Side

You know, it's Spring.  And we are feeling the need for a break from Murder, Mayhem, and Death. So today we take a brief departure from the world of mysteries and detectives to relish an hour with a favorite: H.H. Munro, better known as "Saki" - one of the masters of the late 19th, early 20th C short story.

Munro (1870-1916) was a British writer whose witty, mischievous and sometimes macabre stories satirize Edwardian society and culture. He is often compared to O. Henry and Dorothy Parker. Influenced by Oscar Wilde, Lewis Carroll and Rudyard Kipling, he himself influenced A. A. Milne, Noël Coward and P. G. Wodehouse.

Da5id Abbot, Savannah Blindside, and Caledonia Skytower share an alfresco buffet of short adventures, and tales of manners by the noted author, including:
  • The Remoulding of Groby Lington
  • The Match-Maker
  • Hermann the Irascible - A Story of the Great Weep
  • Mrs. Packletide's Tiger
  • The Stampeding of Lady Bastable
  • The Sex That Doesn't Shop

SUNDAY, May 12th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME at Baker Street

THIS WEEK: The Adventure of The Lion's Mane

From THE CASEBOOK OF SHERLOCK HOLMES (1927),notable as one of the few Holmes stories narrated by Holmes himself.

Holmes is enjoying his retirement in Sussex when one day at the beach, he meets his friend Harold Stackhurst, the headmaster of a nearby preparatory school called The Gables. No sooner have they met than Stackhurst's science teacher, Fitzroy McPherson, staggers up to them, clearly in agony and wearing only an overcoat and trousers. He collapses, manages to say something about a "lion's mane", and then succumbs. He is observed to have red welts all over his back, possibly administered by a flexible weapon of some kind, for the marks curve over his shoulder and round his ribs.

Moments later, Ian Murdoch, a mathematics teacher at The Gables, comes up behind them. He has not seen the attack, and has only just arrived at the beach from the school. Holmes sees a couple of people far up the beach, but thinks they are much too far away to have had anything to do with McPherson's death. How did he die?

Savannah Blindside, Kayden Oconnell, and Caledonia Skytower, live on stream from the Seanchai Fireside Room.

WEDNESDAY, May 8th at 7pm: Meet MIDSUMMER on LEA 2

A Midsummer Night's Dream is one of Shakespeare's most enchanting plays and now also an LEA project created by Aoife Lorefield.

Tonight, Aoife offers a tour of her Midsummer Night's creations, with an eye to sharing her plans for song and story on the sim. Midsummer has just opened, is still in its final construction stages, and offers a variety of opportunities for the Seanchai Community.

Visit the Astrologer's Tower, the Inn of Infinite Dreams, and the Faerie Hall. Explore the workshop where the rude mechanicals craft their play and the stage where they present it. Wander through the gardens.

If you love listening to stories, there will be readings throughout May and June. And if you love to write, read, sing, or otherwise perform, there are opportunities here as well!

The tour, replete with bits of Shakespeare and random poems, will last an hour. Please feel free to stay and explore. And if you do have ideas about performance, stay and talk with Aoife!

Teleport from Seanchai on Holly Kai (there will be a panel there) or meet us at http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/LEA2/127/127/26

TUESDAY, May 6th at 7pm: More from KALEIDOSCOPE

Caledonia continues sharing adventures from author Dorothy Gilman's clairvoyant countess...

When a brilliant young violinist dies in a horrific accident, Madame Karitska has only to hold the victim’s instrument in her hands to perceive the shocking truth. And when an attaché case is suddenly dropped into her lap by a man fleeing a crowded subway, she knows it’s time to consult her good friend Detective-Lieutenant Pruden.

A nine-year-old accused of murder, a man dying a slow death by witchcraft– for the hunted and the haunted, Madame Karitska’s shabby downtown apartment becomes a haven, where brilliant patterns of violence, greed, passion, and strange obsessions mix and disintegrate with stunning, kaleidoscopic beauty.
