@ 7PM - WHAT ABIGAIL DID THAT SUMMER

It is the summer of 2013 and Abigail Kamara has been left to her own devices. This might, by those who know her, be considered a mistake.

While her cousin, police constable and apprentice wizard Peter Grant, is off in the sticks chasing unicorns Abigail is chasing her own mystery: teenagers around Hampstead Heath have been going missing but before the police can get fully engaged the teens return home – unharmed but vague about where they’ve been.

Aided only by her new friend Simon, her knowledge that magic is real and a posse of talking foxes that think they’re spies, Abigail must venture into the wilds of Hampstead to discover who is luring the teenagers and more importantly – why?

Join Corwyn Allen as he reads Ben Aaronovitch’s latest novel.

SUNDAY, May 30th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME with L. Frank Baum Continues

TEATIME with L. Frank Baum continues in the Fireside room with Corwyn Allen, Rik Merlin, Kayden Connell, Gloriana Maertens, and Caledonia Skytower, live on stream.

TODAY: from AMERICAN FAIRY TALES ~ The Capture of Father Time, The Dummy That Lived, The King of the Polar Bears, and the Introduction from SEA FAIRIES (which we'll read more from in our final session next week)

Lyman Frank Baum (May 15th, 1856 – May 6th, 1919) was an American author best known for his children’s books, particularly The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and its sequels (14 novels in all). His prolific output included 55 novels, 83 short stories,  over 200 poems and at least 42 scripts.

Baum sought to create a uniquely American mythology separate from any European roots. In typically Yankee fashion, he accomplished this by creating a melting pot of story archetypes, mixed and brewed into a somewhat satirical, sometimes glib, very tongue-in-cheek concoction that still manages a certain quaintness.

LITTLE FUZZY continues in The Glen

Protagonist Jack Holloway lives a solitary life mining valuable "sunstones" in the wilderness of the planet Zarathustra, managed by Victor Grego's Chartered Zarathustra Company, which built colonial outposts there and now reaps the benefits of the planet's resources. One day, Holloway meets a small golden-furred humanoid whom he names "Little Fuzzy", who soon introduces Holloway to his family. Holloway cares for the Fuzzies and spreads word of their apparently intelligent behavior.

Kt presents H. Beam Piper's tale, live on Stream.

WEDNESDAY, May 26th at 7PM: SKINK Begins

Blinding storms, poisonous snakes, crazed pigs and giant gators. Add in a missing young girl, her improbably brave cousin, and a ragged wandering vigilante named Skink, and Carl Hiaasen sets the stage for a Florida misadventure in "Skink -- No Surrender." But watch out fer the gators.

Kayden presents Carl Hiaasen's adventure, live.

@ 7PM - OLD PETER'S RUSSIAN TALES

Journalist Arthur Ransome – who would later gain fame for Swallows and Amazons, – traveled between England and Russia either side of the 1917 revolution. His initial reason for doing so was to escape his marriage. However, he became fascinated by the Russian language and life, particularly old folk tales.

In 1912 he came across a collection of translations of tales into English, but found the language and style exceptionally poor. However, he was captivated by the richness of the material, noting it differed from both Scandinavia, Brittany, Wales and Scotland.

So in 1914, he set about collecting tales and translating them for himself whilst in Russia, with a volume of stories published under the title Old Peter’s Russian Tales in 1916, when he was staying in Vergezha, on the River Volkhov.

Tonight, Willow Moonfire brings these tales to Seanchai Library. live.

THURSDAY May 13th at 7pm: Monsters of Mythology - ANTEUS!

"The gods are watching
Monsters of Mythology - ANTEUS!
part 2 of 2

Anteus is the monster antihero of tonight’s story. He is the towering, bloodthirsty son of Mother Earth and the Serpent of Chaos, a cannibal giant made happy only by the cries of human suffering. He is a hated but invincible king - until he encounters Hercules.
Their battle is arranged by Hera, Queen of the Gods. In a jealous rage, she has conspired to tilt the outcome in the giant's favor. Anteus has been given a magical power, so that if he is knocked to earth he will rise up stronger than before. Hercules is then made to vow that he will fight unarmed. Only as tall as Anteus's knee, the Theban hero appears doomed.
But other gods are watching . . .
This is a tale of comrades lost and prophecies fulfilled; of magically monstrous forces in battle. It is a riveting saga of those who thrive on revenge and are fueled by bloodlust, but it also tells of the even stronger powers of compassion and hope. It is about jealous rivalries and angers expanded to the scale of giants and gods, about brave sacrifices and heroic deeds, all within the turbulent world of myth occupied by heroes, gods, and monsters.

Long, long ago, Lily's halmoni (grandmother) stole something from the tigers and now the tigers want it back. The tigers have arrived with an offer for Lily: return what Halmoni stole in exchange for the return of her Halmoni’s health.

It is a tempting offer; but deals with magical tigers are not always what they appear to be. So Lily must, with the help of her sister and her friend Ricky, find her voice and her courage, and face whatever trickery the tiger may conjure.
