First published in Canada in 1967, it was not until 1973 when the book was picked up by an American publisher. Released to wide acclaim, it reached No.1 on the New York Times bestseller list. Flatland was written in 1884 by a school teacher using fiction to explain geometry.

It concerns the adventures of Mr. A. Square who lives in a universe made of a flat plane. For Mr. Square concepts of "up" and "down" don't even exist until he visits Lineland which has only Left and Right and later is visited by a being from the world of 3 dimensions.
