WEDNESDAY, March 1 @ 7 PM: POLITICALLY CORRECT BEDTIME STORIES

Once upon a time, in the olden days, heavy-set middle-aged men would congregate in their elitist clubs, sit in over-stuffed leather chairs, smoke air-choking cigars, and pitch story ideas and plots to each other. Problem was, these stories, many of which found their way into the general social consciousness, reflected the way in which these men lived and saw their world: that is, the stories were sexist, discriminatory, unfair, culturally biased, and in general, demeaning to witches, animals, goblins, and fairies everywhere.

Finally, after centuries of these abusive tales, which have been handed down--unknowingly--from one male-biased generation to the next, James Finn Garner has taken it upon himself (that's right, yet another man) to enlighten and liberate these classic bedtime stories and retell them in a way that is much more in keeping with the society in which we live today.

Originally published in 1994, Politically Correct Bedtime Stories spent more than 60 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list, eventually hitting the #1 spot. Also a best seller in Canada and Great Britain, it has been translated into more than 25 languages and adapted numberless times for stage and radio. According to the Times of London: “It is beautiful. It demolishes, in few but elegant words, a dozen kinds of silliness. It is better than I can possibly convey.”

TUESDAY, February 28th at 7pm: SAVE ROOM FOR PIE Begins

Our best-laid plans will yield to fate.
And we will say, “We lived. We ate.”

As a lifelong eater, Roy Blount Jr. always got along easy with food—he didn’t have to think, he just ate. But food doesn’t exist in a vacuum; there’s the global climate and the global economy to consider, not to mention Blount’s chronic sinusitis, which constricts his sense of smell, and consequently his taste buds. So while he’s always frowned on eating with an ulterior motive, times have changed.

Save Room for Pie grapples with these and other food-related questions in Blount’s signature style. Here you’ll find lively meditations on everything from bacon froth to grapefruit, Kobe beef to biscuits. You’ll also find defenses of gizzards, mullet, okra, cane syrup, watermelon, and boiled peanuts; an imagined dialogue between Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden; input from Louis Armstrong, Frederick Douglass, and Blaze Starr; and of course some shampooed possums and carjacking turkeys.

In poems and songs, limericks and fake (or sometimes true) news stories, Blount talks about food in surprising and innovative ways, with all the wit and verve that prompted Garrison Keillor, in The Paris Review, to say: “Blount is the best. He can be literate, uncouth, and soulful all in one sentence.”

MONDAY February 27th at 7pm: THE CRUCIBLE OF TIME

THE CRUCIBLE OF TIME
- by John Brunner -
Far off in space is an alien race which is so much like us, yet so un-alike. From the birth of their earliest civilization through to their attainment of star flight as their star system passes through the galaxy, we follow their development through the ages.
Aquatic by nature, this race presents some significant challenges well outside the realms of anything encountered by humanity. But they are also driven by all too familiar hopes, fears, desires, needs, wants, prejudices, impact of religious ideologies, and the quest for knowledge we have experienced in the growth of our own civilization.

The story is set during the Stone Age, and tells of a caveman named Ugh-lomi, who bonds with the young woman Eudena and kills his rival, the de facto tribal leader Uya. Whilst in exile, Ugh-lomi becomes the first man to ride a horse, and to combine stone and wood to fashion an axe. He uses this weapon, along with his wits, to survive encounters with cave bears, hyenas and rhinos, and ultimately claim the position of tribal leader for himself.

SUNDAY, February 19th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME Mysteries Continues

Humphrey Bogart as Raymond Chandler's signature detective, Phillip Marlowe
"There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge."       ~ RED WIND, by Raymond Chandler

Possessing one of the most lauded and beloved opening paragraphs in noir-detective fiction, Raymond Chandler introduces Phillip Marlowe, who would become his signature detective.

Chandler's RED WIND continues today, with Part 2 of 3, live in voice, with Kayden Oconnell, John Morland and Caledonia Skytower.

WEDNESDAY, February 15th at 7PM: More from THE WINTER OF OUR WODEHOUSE

Things have thawed on the Bradley University sim, but it still is technically Winter.  What's more it's the day after St Valentine's Day and Trolley's steps are still waltzing to the string'ed strains of romance.

Two Wodehousian stories of romance tonight:

"Absent Treatment" from My Man Jeeves - a newly married man forgets his first wedding anniversary and there's Hell to pay.

"The Romance of an Ugly Policeman" from The Man with Two Left Feet - features a husband whose wife controls the purse strings. For those readers who have been acquainted with Wodehouse’s “upper crust” characters, this story affords a chance to appreciate just how masterfully Wodehouse wrote about the “rest of us” struggling to make our way in life.

TUESDAY, February 14th at 7pm: A MONSTROUS REGIMENT OF WOMEN Continues

Caledonia continues Laurie R. King's second adventure in her Mary Russell-Sherlock Holmes series.

It might not seem like a proper Valentine's Day session, but remember ... Mary has been abducted, is being held prisoner, and is being treated very badly.  Will she escape.  Will she be saved?  It just might be a more appropriate tale for the day than at first it seems.

MONDAY, February 13th at 7:00pm: THE CRUCIBLE OF TIME Resumes

Gyro Muggins resumes this saga by John Brunner. First published as two-part story which appeared in Isaac Asimov’s Science Fiction Magazine, it’s an ambitious tale of alien intelligence which grew to a series of six linked tales pushed as a single novel in 1983.
Charting six periods of time, each a thousand years after the previous, the six stories focus on the efforts of a group of individuals in each era as they face one or more challenges, their success in overcoming these challenges inevitably leading them towards a greater understanding of their planet’s plight, and ultimately, the ability to deal with that plight and the survival of their civilization.

SUNDAY, February 12th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME MYSTERIES!

A new iteration of Tea Time begins:
TEA TIME MYSTERIES!
Everything non-Holmesian from Christie to Hamett, classic sleuthing to hard boiled detectives of the noir-ish hue.

THIS WEEK FEATURING: Raymond Chandler
One short story and the beginning of a longer adventure:

I'll Be Waiting.  The shortest of Chandler’s stories; it is also the first—and only—one published in a “slick” magazine. Nearly all his previous works of short fiction had been published in the pulps Black Mask and Dime Detective, but Chandler wrote one for the Saturday Evening Post at the behest of his agent and was motivated primarily by the money such magazines paid.

Red Wind - (begins, to be continued next week)A favorite of many Raymond Chandler fans, Red Wind sports a memorable first paragraph the set the evocative worlds of the noir tale. Chandler maintains the wind motif throughout the story. Throughout the mayhem Philip Marlowe solves a murder and tries to track down some missing pearls.

WEDNESDAY, February 8th at 7PM: THE WINTER OF OUR WODEHOUSE Begins

Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse KBE was an English author and one of the most widely read humorists of the 20th century.  Among his best known collections are the Jeeves and Wooster, Blandings Castle, and extended to a broad cross section for stories for all ages.

Wodehouse was a great fan of Sherlock Holmes and he was the product of the British public school (USA private school) educational system where one learns the fine arts of "getting away with murder."

Two mystery adventures tonight: "Aunt Agatha Takes the Count" from Wodehouse on Crime; and "Misunderstood" from Death at the Excelsior and Other Stories.
