AUTUMN SPECIAL: Listening Rooms! Listening Rooms!

After the success of the Pirate Story Listening Room at this year's Pirate Cove, our Shandon Loring has expanded the idea for one of our favorite times of year.  Not one, but TWO listening rooms are now available for your 24/7 story pleasure.

THE RAVEN'S CHAMBER focuses specifically on Edgar Allen Poe's 1845 narrative Poem: The Raven. The poem makes use of folk, mythological, religious, and classical references, and was inspired in part by a talking raven in the novel Barnaby Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of 'Eighty by Charles Dickens. Poe additionally borrows the complex rhythm and meter of Elizabeth Barrett's poem "Lady Geraldine's Courtship", and makes use of internal rhyme as well as alliteration throughout.  "Traditional" and "Alternate" readings of the poem can be heard in the room on stream, along with other interpretive content.

THE GHOST STORIES LISTENING ROOM takes a broader scope, offering haunting tales in comfortably spooky atmosphere.

WEDNESDAY, October 9th at 7pm: THE MYSTERIOUS WOODS OF WHISTLE ROOT Begins

11-year-old Carly Bean Bitters suffers a peculiar malady: she can only sleep by the light of day, and

is awake through the night, spending her time up in the attic of her aunt’s house, awaiting the arrival of the dawn.

One night, she notes a strange squash that appears on her roof. Investigating, she comes across Lewis, a fiddle-playing rat. Lewis tells Carly the squash is a replacement for one of the rats in the group who has been abducted by owls.

He goes on to explain that until recently, the owls join with the rats dancing in the moonlight within the Whistle Root woods to the music played by Lewis and has band. But then something changed, and instead of dancing with the rats, the owls took to abducting them.

Grabbed by an owl herself, Carly find herself dropped into the woods where she meets the once happy community of rats, now gravely threatened by the hostile owls. At school, and struggling to stay awake, she also finds a strange note warning that the “Moon Child” is in danger.

Enlisting the help of another strange child, Green, who spend his time hiding under the library, Carly sets out to solve the riddle of the “Moon Child” and the reason for the owls’ change in behaviour – and along the way, discovers something unexpected about herself.

TUESDAY, October 8th at 7pm: THE SPOOKY CLASSICS - M.R.James

Caledonia presents ghostly stories from some of the classics of the genre.  Each week features a
different author associated with tales of the macabre, Gothic, or plain old spooky.

THIS WEEK: 
M.R. James  

James redefined the ghost story for the new century by abandoning many of the formal Gothic clichés of his predecessors and using more realistic contemporary settings. However, James's protagonists and plots tend to reflect his own antiquarian interests. Accordingly, he is known as the originator of the "antiquarian ghost story".

"The Monster Demands A Mate!"

THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN

After recovering from injuries sustained in the mob attack upon himself and his creation, Dr. Frankenstein falls under the control of his former mentor, Dr. Pretorius, who insists the now-chastened doctor resume his experiments in creating new life. Meanwhile, the Monster remains on the run from those who wish to destroy him without understanding that his intentions are generally good despite his lack of socialization and self-control.

Tonight’s story, written by Guy Preston, was derived from the 1935 screenplay of the same name, and was published and released at the same time as the movie. That movie “monsterpiece” was created by James Whale, and is widely considered the best film of the “golden age” of horror cinema. Cue the lightning . . .

TUESDAY, October 1st at 7PM: THE SPOOKY CLASSICS - Washington Irving

Washington Irving was an American short story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" (1819) and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (1820), both of which appear in his collection The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent."

Irving was one of the first American writers to earn acclaim in Europe, and he encouraged other American authors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Herman Melville, and Edgar Allan Poe. He was also admired by some British writers, including Lord Byron, Thomas Campbell, Charles Dickens, Francis Jeffrey, and Walter Scott. He advocated for writing as a legitimate profession and argued for stronger laws to protect American writers from copyright infringement.

"The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent." is a collection of 34 essays and short stories written by the American author Washington Irving. It was published serially throughout 1819 and 1820. The collection includes two of Irving's best-known stories, attributed to the fictional Dutch historian Diedrich Knickerbocker.

The "Legend" relates the tale of Ichabod Crane, a lean, lanky and extremely superstitious schoolmaster from Connecticut, who competes with Abraham "Brom Bones" Van Brunt, the town rowdy, for the hand of 18-year-old Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter and sole child of wealthy farmer Baltus Van Tassel. Ichabod Crane, a Yankee and an outsider, sees marriage to Katrina as a means of procuring Van Tassel's extravagant wealth. Bones, the local hero, unable to force Ichabod into a physical showdown to settle things, plays a series of pranks on the superstitious schoolmaster. The tension among the three continues for some time, and is soon brought to a head. On a placid autumn night, the ambitious Crane attends a harvest party at the Van Tassels' homestead. He dances, partakes in the feast, and listens to ghostly legends told by Brom and the locals, but his true aim is to propose to Katrina after the guests leave. His intentions, however, are ill-fated - as is his homeward journey that night.

Award-winning author Robert Macfarlane and acclaimed artist & author Jackie Morris created something wonderful and unique in their 2017 book. "The Lost Words" is a ‘book of spells’ that seeks to conjure back the near-lost magic and strangeness of the nature that surrounds us. It transcends age barriers inspiring children and moving adults with its wide appeal. This past July eight leading folk musicians released their response to the creatures, art, and language of Macfarlane & Morris' book.

Captain Jack Sparrow's ship, the Barnacle, and its up-till-now unshakable crew have suddenly fallen under a sinister spell. While continuing on their quest for the storied Sword of Cortés, the crew suddenly finds itself entranced by an ethereal song. As a result, each of them attempts to take the Barnacle in a different direction—and away from the Sword’s supposed location. Only Jack seems unaffected by the strange song, but can he both subdue his crew and defeat the mysterious force behind the dark spell?

In one of the many Seanchai Library traditions, it is that time again. As we crack open the door to the High Story Season, we begin with a fanciful embrace of the buccaneer mythos - PIRATES! Thursday is International Talk Like a Pirate Day, after all!
