There are very few people that Seanchai Library has counted as "friend" longer than R. Dismantled.  He has been a supporter, an advocate, and a fellow storyteller from our early days.

WEDNESDAY, September 18th at 7pm: TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE PIRATE DAY!

In one of the many Seanchai Library traditions, it is that time again. As we crack open the door to the High Story Season, we begin with a fanciful embrace of the buccaneer mythos - PIRATES! Thursday is International Talk Like a Pirate Day, after all!

WEDNESDAY, May 29th at 7:00pm: 100w STORY PODCAST 14th Anniversary!

Story writer, story-teller, commentator, raconteur – R. Crap Mariner is all of these, and more. 

On May 31st, 2005, after being inspired by both a friend and Woody Allen to write 100-word stories  – or “drabbles” – he created the 100-word Story podcast, promising to write a story a day until the day he dies. 

Fourteen years on, Monsieur Mariner is still writing  – and still reading his stories in what is quite probably among the longest-running daily podcast of original material in the world.

WEDNESDAY, January 30th at 7PM: KEEPIN' IT BRIEF - A Tribute

Stories serve so many purposes in our lives: dreaming, expressing, exploring, problem solving. Stories also bring people together in unique and unexpected ways.

Tonight, R. Crap Mariner pays tribute to a friend: a fellow scribe, a brother of the brief pen.  Steve Krodman, (known as "Elisson") passed away on January 11th. Through his blog Lost in the Cheese Aisle and other venues to share his words, he explored the 100w story form and the possibilities in making every word count.

TUESDAY, August 28th at 7pm: Selections from CALYPSO

Author David Sedaris is a Grammy Award-nominated American humorist and radio contributor, known for his collections of essays and short stories which are mostly autobiographical and self-deprecating in content and style.

When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast – which in typical fashion he names “Sea Section” - Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And indeed, that’s how it appears to start, apart from one annoying little truth he soon discovers. To quote an unrelated film: “no matter where you go, there you are”; which for Sedaris means when all is said and done, you cannot take a vacation from yourself.

This realisation brings Sedaris’ formidable powers of observation and dry humour to the fore as he considers middle age and mortality and the dawning understanding that life has reached a point where perhaps life has reached a point where the best parts of the story are behind you, rather than awaiting your arrival. Dark, yes; a little morbid, possibly, but the humour is unmistakable and so deeply rooted in the unfolding of this personal tale, it’s impossible not to become caught up within it.

It's Finally Here!  And we have two sessions featuring original works to celebrate the day:

@ 7PM: GEORGE WAS A PIRATE...
R. Crap Mariner's "Pirate George" canon of 100w stories have become a favorite at Seanchai Library.  Beginning just about a year ago, George has had all manner of misadventure, in story after story.  Tonight Corwyn, Faerie, Kayden, and Caledonia will bravely share George's various pirate adventures, selected randomly from the "George stories," and read "cold" - with no advanced preparation.  

@ 8:30PM: METEOR MAGS: Hang My Body on the Pier

In “Hang My Body on the Pier”, a pirate queen's memoirs tell of her rise to power at the end of the golden age of Atlantic piracy. Orphaned, young Magdalena joins a pirate crew that carves a path of destruction along the coast of colonial America.  But as she matures and can no longer pass for a male, she realizes that a woman's place is in the captain's chair. There’s just one thing she needs to do before she can get her own ship… Steal a whole lot of money!
