WEDNESDAY, May 31st at 7pm: THE 100 WORD PODCAST "DOZENAVERSARY"

Sound the Trumpets!  Crash the Cymbals!  Bring on the Marching Band!

Story writer, story-teller, commentator, raconteur – Crap Mariner is all of these, and more. On May 31st, 2005, after being inspired by both a friend and Woody Allen to write 100-word stories  – or “drabbles” – Crap created the 100-word Story podcast, promising to write a story a day until the day he dies.

Today, 12 years on, Crap is still writing  – and still reading his stories in what is quite probably the longest-running daily podcast of original material in the world.

Crap Mariner graces the Story Floor once again.  Lord knows what he'll do to it THIS time!  He first introduced us to the work of Frank Key, and is back with more selections from Hooting Yard

The long-running radio series Hooting Yard on the Air featured Frank Key, a British writer, blogger and broadcaster best known for his self-published short-story collections.  The Hooting Yard has been broadcast weekly on Resonance FM since April 2004.  Key co-founded the Malice Aforethought Press with Max Décharné and published the fiction of Ellis Sharp.

Always unpredictable and irreverent, no subject is too sacred, no cow too holy for Crap not to pull it out, examine it, and bang it on the table a few times before putting it back where he found it - albeit slightly crumpled.  And no, he NEVER has opinions! But Crap can surprise you as well.  Just when you think it is all quips and sarcasm, he zaps you to your knees with a moment of profound feeling and insight, leaving you breathless.

Burroughs was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, painter, and spoken word performer. A primary figure of the Beat Generation and a major postmodernist author, he is considered to be "one of the most politically trenchant, culturally influential, and innovative artists of the 20th century".  His influence is considered to have affected a range of popular culture as well as literature. Burroughs wrote eighteen novels and novellas, six collections of short stories and four collections of essays. Five books have been published of his interviews and correspondences. He also collaborated on projects and recordings with numerous performers and musicians, and made many appearances in films. His shade appears at Seanchai Library, tonight.

MONDAY, September 29th at 7pm: THE WEIRDNESS OF JOHN WATERS

John has always been just a little different.  Waters is an American film director, screenwriter, actor, stand-up comedian, journalist, visual artist, and art collector, who rose to fame in the early 1970s for his transgressive cult films.  Crap Mariner, who is also a little different in his own unique way, shares some selected bits of John Waters' madness tonight.

MONDAY, May 26th at 7pm: "HUNTER SL THOMPSON"

Crap Mariner celebrates a 20th century writing legend.  It was said of the American Journalist and Author: "the true voice of Thompson is revealed to be that of American moralist ... one who often makes himself ugly to expose the ugliness he sees around him." (Hari Kunzru)

Born in Louisville, Kentucky, to a middle-class family, Thompson had a turbulent youth after the death of his father left the family in poverty. He was unable to formally finish high school as he was incarcerated for 60 days after abetting a robbery. He subsequently joined the United States Air Force before moving into journalism. He traveled frequently, including stints in California, Puerto Rico, and Brazil, before settling in Aspen, Colorado, in the early 1960s.

TUESDAY, September 24th at 7PM: THE WORDS AND WIT OF DAVID RAKOFF

The late David Rakoff died in August a year ago of cancer.  He was a Canadian-born writer based in New York City who was noted for his humorous, sometimes autobiographical non-fiction essays. Rakoff was an essayist, journalist, and actor, and a regular contributor to WBEZ's This American Life. Rakoff described himself as a "New York writer" who also happened to be a "Canadian writer", a "mega Jewish writer", a "gay writer" and an "East Asian Studies major who has forgotten most of his Japanese" writer.

Crap Mariner returns to his "Rakoff Files" to share more essays of wit, humor, and thought-provoking inspiration.  Live in Voice.

MONDAY, July 22nd @ 7PM: LET'S EXPLORE DAVID SEDARIS (with Avatars!)

Crap Mariner mounts an expedition to explore the world of David Sedaris, modern  American humorist, comedian, author, and radio contributor who was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Sedaris has been described as "the rock star of writers." He was publicly recognized in 1992 when National Public Radio broadcast his essay "SantaLand Diaries" and has published numerous books of essays including the recent "Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls."

WEDNESDAY, May 22nd @7:00pm: CRAP IS BACK!

100w stories ("Drabble") are an incredible writing exercise in economy and precision.  Like the poetic form haiku, it forces the writer to be very specific as each word, each syllable counts - literally and figuratively!  Here is Crap's composition from Friday, May 17th (last week)

"Before I ever read Dickens’ Oliver Twist, I saw a tape of the 1969 musical.
I find musicals stupid. People burst into song over the strangest shit. Everybody dances and spins and laughs and leaps.
Did something get in the water supply? A gas leak making everybody loony?
A little chasing, a little murder, and we find Fagin fumbling his wealth into the muck.
Poor guy. Oh well.
Later on, I read the book.
They hanged him?
Dude. Harsh.
I put the book back on the shelf, sigh, and load up the DVD.
Perhaps musicals aren’t so stupid after all."

MONDAY, April 22nd at 7PM: FAIRYTALES ~ Straight Up with Chaser!

Crap's back in the library and he's brought guest Taralyn Gravois to stir up an enticing cocktail of stories.

Taralyn presents the traditional forms of fairytales, straight up.  Then Crap takes them and turns them over, shakes them vigorously, and serves up a chaser of the same tale in an original parody. More fun than a barrel full of swizzle sticks!

Frank Key is a British writer, blogger and broadcaster best known for his self-published short-story collections and his long-running radio series Hooting Yard on the Air, which has been broadcast weekly on Resonance FM since April 2004. "The Guardian's" literature columnist Sam Jordison has described Frank Key as one of the most prolific living writers of literary nonsense. "The Guardian's" David Stubbs wrote that Frank's prose "reminds of Max Ernst engravings gone Bonzo Doo-Dah".
