SUNDAY 25 Nov at 4pm: CVL FUNdraiser: Gina Gracemount Burlesque Show

Put on your cute burlesque outfits and get ready to have fun! We'll have the poles out for dancing as Gina treats us to fun tunes. This is a fundraiser for CVL, so be sure to tuck a few lindens in your pocket - you never know if you might need to 'encourage' someone to dance by donating to the cause.

Plus...Derry and Bear will have some of their images up for sale - all proceeds going to CVL!

About Gina: originally from Southampton, England, Gina now lives on Florida's Gulf Coast. Her velvet smooth voice has been wow'ing audiences in Second Life for almost two years with her interpretations of jazz & blues classics and modern hits. WEDNESDAY, November 21st at 7PM: PETER PAN ~ Part 4

It is the legendary "Night of Nights" when so much will happen and change in the Never Land. But then, change is a constant in the Never Land, where the imagination and minds of children rule with all their squiggly lines, shifting focuses, and brightly colored delights.

Wendy is about to tell a story. What kind if story will it be? And what will be the result of this story because, as you know, nothing is without consequences when you live in the Never Land, and every day is an adventure with the boy who won't grow up!

TUESDAY 20 Nov at 7pm: Food, Friends, Family, Lovers…and a Little Chocolate Now and Then

In the immortal words of Charles M. Schulz "All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt". Tonight we'll explore the relationship between relationships and food; how our eating experiences influence our interactions with friends, family members and lovers. Stories from M.F.K. Fisher and other authors, including a few references to…more adult themes. Stories in voice, please come prepared with a snack.

MONDAY, November 19th at 7pm: The Conclusion KITE FIGHTERS

As the two young brothers continue to work together, growing side-by-side as they learn about cooperation, respect, and tradition. The big kite fighting competition looms large on the horizon. It will take the skill of both brothers, along with the support and encouragement of their King and friend, to win the day and bring honor and glory to their house and their Kingdom.

“The Dowager Moncur’s Spectacles” by Laura Moncur. Is the Lady Moncur mad? Dowager Lady Moncur owns three pair of spectacles – that is odd, but not mad; but the odd thing is what those glasses show the good lady. You would think she’d just read the novels of Charles Dickens with them, but no! Join Caledonia Skytower and Derry McMahon to see what the Dowager sees in her spectacles.

“Lessons of a Clockwork Queen” by Megan Arkenberg. Sometimes things really don’t run well, even when they run by clockwork. A fairy tale set in steampunk time, with a cast of clockwork queens, winding-key maids and a perfumer’s daughter. This story offers lessons taught and learned, and a bit of romance. Presented in voice by Faerie Maven-Pralou.

WEDNESDAY, November 7th at 7PM: "Peter Pan" ~ Part 1

Peter Pan is J. M. Barrie's most famous work, in the form of a 1904 play and a 1911 novel, respectively. Both versions tell the story of Peter Pan, a mischievous little boy who can fly, and his adventures on the island of Neverland with Wendy Darling and her brothers, the fairy Tinker Bell, the Lost Boys, the Indian princess Tiger Lily, and the pirate Captain Hook.

Caledonia Skytower presents Barrie’s classic, adapted into six parts, throughout the month of November at Seanchai Library and Magicland live in voice. Tonight, the adventure begins!

Two tales today! "Opals from Sydney" by Mary Louise Eklund blends science and romance with a bit of action thriller. "Portrait of a Lady in a Monocle" by Jody Lynne Nye offers a peek at a feminist inventor confronting the conservative old-boy network. Stories in voice, time to get your gears on!

MONDAY, November 5th at 7pm: "The Kite Fighters" ~ Part 1

In a riveting narrative set in fifteenth-century Korea, two brothers discover a shared passion for kites. Newbery Award-Winnibg Author Linda Sue Park weaves together the journey of Kee-sup and his younger brother, Young-sup, as their shared love of kites and their individual skills both gain praise, and challenge family traditions. This touching and suspenseful story, filled with the authentic detail and flavor of traditional Korean kite fighting, brings a remarkable setting vividly to life.

Get your spook on and cozy up at the Library where Caledonia presents selections from Neil Gaiman's Newberry winning book about a human boy, Nobody Owens, growing up in a graveyard and being raised by the ghostly inhabitants therein.

In addition, hopefully, an original short story based on one of the Five Irish Haunts to be found on the Seanchai grounds during this most spookable of times.

Tuesday 30 October @ 7pm: "The Whistling Room" with Bear Silvershade

Carnacki calls his friends together to tell them the tale of "TheWhistling Room,” a chamber in a mansion manifests that emits a loud,eerie whistling. He makes an exceedingly thorough search of the roomand can find no explanation but is still not convinced of thesupernatural nature of the sound. That is, until he climbs a ladderand peers into the room – the horror he witnesses there leads him touncover a legend of love, betrayal and hatred lingering long afterdeath.Thomas Carnacki is a supernatural detective, the protagonist of aseries of six short stories written between 1910 and 1912 by Englishfantasy writer William Hope Hodgson, later published as a collectionin “Carnacki the Ghost Finder,” published in 1913. SATURDAY 27 October at 10am in Raglan - "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow"

The story is set circa 1790 in the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town, in a secluded glen called Sleepy Hollow. It tells of Ichabod Crane, a sycophantic, lean, lanky, and extremely superstitious schoolmaster from Connecticut, who competes with Abraham "Brom Bones" Van Brunt, the town rowdy, for the hand of 18-year-old Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter and sole child of a wealthy farmer. As Crane leaves a party he attended at the Van Tassel home on an autumn night, he is pursued by the Headless Horseman, who is supposedly the ghost of a Hessian trooper who had his head shot off by a stray cannonball during "some nameless battle" of the American Revolutionary War, and who "rides forth to the scene of battle in nightly quest of his head". Join us as Bear Silvershade and Derry McMahon read this favorite fall tale aloud.

FRIDAY, October 26th @ 8PM: "The Turn of the Screw" ~ Concludes

Tonight all will be revealed, or will it?

Critics over the century and more since The Turn of the Screw was published, cannot agree on exactly what the truth of this ghostly thriller is. It's ambiguities are part of what make it one of the all time classic ghost stories. Come along tonight for the conclusion, and draw a few of your own.

Originally published in 1898, it is a ghost story, regardless of what other labels have been applied to it over the years.

Due to its ambiguous content, it became a favourite text of academics who subscribe to New Criticism. The novella has had differing interpretations, often mutually exclusive. Many critics have tried to determine the exact nature of the evil hinted at by the story. However, others have argued that the true brilliance of the novella comes with its ability to create an intimate confusion and suspense for the reader.

The Haunting plot thickens. Is the haunting real? Or is the governess mad?

The imagery of The Turn of the Screw is reminiscent of the gothic genre. The emphasis on old and mysterious buildings throughout the novella reinforces this motif. James also relates the amount of light present in various scenes to the strength of the supernatural or ghostly forces apparently at work. The governess refers directly to The Mysteries of Udolpho and indirectly to Jane Eyre, evoking a comparison of the governess not only to Jane Eyre's protagonist, but to Bertha, the madwoman confined in Thornfield.

TUESDAY, October 23rd at 7:00pm: "The Turn of the Screw" ~ Part 2

Henry James' chilling classic continues tonight.

Throughout his career James was attracted to the ghost story genre. However, he was not fond of literature's stereotypical ghosts, the old-fashioned 'screamers' and 'slashers'. Rather, he preferred to create ghosts that were eerie extensions of everyday reality—"the strange and sinister embroidered on the very type of the normal and easy," as he put it in the New York Edition preface to his final ghost story, "The Jolly Corner".

The Turn of the Screw is no exception to this formula. In fact, some have wondered if he didn't intend the "strange and sinister" to be embroidered only on the governess's mind and not on objective reality. The result has been a long-standing critical dispute about the reality of the ghosts and the sanity of the governess.

The Seanchai Library presents Henry James Classic Ghost Story as part of their One-Work-In-One-Week Project: The entire work will be presented inside of one week, Live in Voice. It begins tonight.

"The Turn of the Screw" is an intense psychological tale of terror. It is the story of a Governess who comes to live with and take care of two young children. The Governess loves her new position in charge of the young children, however she is soon disturbed when she begins to see ghosts.

Find you can't make every session and hear the entire work? No worries. Check here as each daily post will have a summary of the previous night's story, so you can keep up. There will also be a notecard giver in the Library so you can keep up in world as well if you wish.

Seanchai Library is known for its diverse programming, presenting a variety of voices and a variety of literature weekly for more than four years. This week, Seanchai Library does something different: One work, in one week. And the chosen work is Henry James classic ghostly novella The Turn of the Screw at Seanchai Library on Imagination Island in Second Life.

A young governess is hired by a man who has become responsible for his young nephew and niece after the death of their parents. His life is in London and has interest in raising the children himself.

The last adventure in this series from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Master Detective, Sherlock Holmes. THIS WEEK: "The Copper Beeches." Grab a cuppa and a smackerel of something and join Caledonia in the lower level of the library for mystery and intrigue!

Violet Hunter visits Holmes, asking whether she should accept a job as governess; a job with very strange conditions. She is enticed by the phenomenal salary which, as originally offered, is £100 a year, later increased to £120 when Miss Hunter baulks at having to cut her long hair short (Her previous position paid £48 per year). This is only one of many peculiar provisos to which she must agree. The employer, Jephro Rucastle, seems pleasant enough, yet Miss Hunter obviously has her suspicions.

A banker, Mr. Alexander Holder of Streatham makes a loan of £50,000 to a socially prominent client, who leaves the Beryl Coronet — one of the most valuable public possessions in existence — as collateral. Holder feels that he must not leave this rare and precious piece of jewellery in his personal safe at the bank, and so he takes it home with him to lock it up there. He is awakened in the night by a noise, enters his dressing room, and is horrified to see his son Arthur with the coronet in his hands, apparently trying to bend it. Holder's niece Mary comes at the sound of all the shouting and, seeing the damaged coronet, faints dead away. Three beryls are missing from it. In a panic, Mr. Holder travels to see Holmes, who agrees to take the case.
