Winter isn’t coming – it’s refusing to go away, but no-one understands why.

Not only that, but Odd has run away from home, despite the fact he can barely walk and has to use a crutch. Nevertheless, he finds his way to the forest, where he encounters three animals: a bear, a fox, and an eagle, and they have a strange story to tell. Listening to them, Odd realizes he must now embark on a strange journey, one he can barely imagine.

For he must now set out and save nothing less that Asgard, City of the Norse Gods. For it has been invaded by the Frost Giants, and while they hold it, winter will not pass away.

It’s going to take a very special kind of boy to defeat the most dangerous of all the Frost Giants and free the mighty Gods. A boy who is resolute, cheerful and infuriating and clever…

…A boy just like Odd, in fact.

TUESDAY, February 25th at 7pm: THE TRUTH IS A CAVE IN THE BLACK MOUNTAIN

Two men, bearing both guilt and secrets, and not really known to one another, set out on a journey to reach the Misty Isle where, it is said, there lies a cave filled with gold from which a many might take as much as he can carry.

One bears guilts he can both forgive and not forgive of himself, the other bearing his own secrets. The reasons for the guilt and the secrets gradually come to the fore as they travel across a landscape as bleak and as hard as their lives. Along the way, they encounter others, travelers, householders, and a ferryman. They are similarly hard and suspicious, and also reflect the Jacobite landscape of

Scotland

where they reside.

Over time, MacInnes, the taller of the two and the one that knows the way to the cave, reveals more of it to his smaller, guilt carrying companion, warning that the cave carries a particular price for those who seek it: It strips away a little bit of anyone who enters.

According to this tome of very specific and very accurate prophecies – written in 1655, shortly before Agnes exploded (which tends to happen when you pack 80 pounds of gunpowder into your petticoats ahead of a mob of self-righteous twits burning you at the stake for being a witch) – the world will end on a Saturday.

Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner. Which some might see as being a bit of a nuisance, really;

particularly an angel, a demon and an 11-year-old boy (himself the subject of a hospital mix-up at birth), all of whom have other plans for the weekend …

We continue our post Virtual Baker Street withdrawal therapy at the hands of a contemporary master, Neil Gaiman. THIS WEEK: A Study In Emerald.

The story is a Sherlock Holmes pastiche transferred to the Cthulhu Mythos universe of horror writer H. P. Lovecraft. It won the 2004 Hugo Award for Best Short Story. The title is a reference to the Sherlock Holmes novel A Study in Scarlet. "A Study in Emerald" first appeared in the anthology Shadows Over Baker Street, a collection of stories combining the worlds of Arthur Conan Doyle and H. P. Lovecraft; it has subsequently been available as part of Gaiman's short story collection Fragile Things, in the collection New Cthulhu: The Recent Weird, and is available online. The online version takes the form of a Victorian periodical or newspaper, which includes various advertisements that reference characters such as Vlad Tepes, Victor Frankenstein, Spring Heeled Jack, and Dr. Jekyll.
