WEDNESDAY, October 24th @ 7pm: "The Turn of the Screw" ~ Part 3

The Haunting plot thickens. Is the haunting real? Or is the governess mad?

The imagery of The Turn of the Screw is reminiscent of the gothic genre. The emphasis on old and mysterious buildings throughout the novella reinforces this motif. James also relates the amount of light present in various scenes to the strength of the supernatural or ghostly forces apparently at work. The governess refers directly to The Mysteries of Udolpho and indirectly to Jane Eyre, evoking a comparison of the governess not only to Jane Eyre's protagonist, but to Bertha, the madwoman confined in Thornfield.

Throughout his career James was attracted to the ghost story genre. However, he was not fond of literature's stereotypical ghosts, the old-fashioned 'screamers' and 'slashers'. Rather, he preferred to create ghosts that were eerie extensions of everyday reality—"the strange and sinister embroidered on the very type of the normal and easy," as he put it in the New York Edition preface to his final ghost story, "The Jolly Corner".

The Turn of the Screw is no exception to this formula. In fact, some have wondered if he didn't intend the "strange and sinister" to be embroidered only on the governess's mind and not on objective reality. The result has been a long-standing critical dispute about the reality of the ghosts and the sanity of the governess.

MONDAY, October 22nd @ 7pm: "The Turn of the Screw" ~ Part 1

The Seanchai Library presents Henry James Classic Ghost Story as part of their One-Work-In-One-Week Project: The entire work will be presented inside of one week, Live in Voice. It begins tonight.

"The Turn of the Screw" is an intense psychological tale of terror. It is the story of a Governess who comes to live with and take care of two young children. The Governess loves her new position in charge of the young children, however she is soon disturbed when she begins to see ghosts.

Find you can't make every session and hear the entire work? No worries. Check here as each daily post will have a summary of the previous night's story, so you can keep up. There will also be a notecard giver in the Library so you can keep up in world as well if you wish.

Seanchai Library is known for its diverse programming, presenting a variety of voices and a variety of literature weekly for more than four years. This week, Seanchai Library does something different: One work, in one week. And the chosen work is Henry James classic ghostly novella The Turn of the Screw at Seanchai Library on Imagination Island in Second Life.

A young governess is hired by a man who has become responsible for his young nephew and niece after the death of their parents. His life is in London and has interest in raising the children himself.

The last adventure in this series from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Master Detective, Sherlock Holmes. THIS WEEK: "The Copper Beeches." Grab a cuppa and a smackerel of something and join Caledonia in the lower level of the library for mystery and intrigue!

Violet Hunter visits Holmes, asking whether she should accept a job as governess; a job with very strange conditions. She is enticed by the phenomenal salary which, as originally offered, is £100 a year, later increased to £120 when Miss Hunter baulks at having to cut her long hair short (Her previous position paid £48 per year). This is only one of many peculiar provisos to which she must agree. The employer, Jephro Rucastle, seems pleasant enough, yet Miss Hunter obviously has her suspicions.

NOTE: This completes The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. TEA TIME will be going on hiatus from now through the end of the year. Drop Caledonia a line if you are interested in TEA TIME in the new year and suggest a series for it.

SATURDAY 27 at 10am in RaglanShire - "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow"

The story is set circa 1790 in the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town, in a secluded glen called Sleepy Hollow. It tells of Ichabod Crane, a sycophantic, lean, lanky, and extremely superstitious schoolmaster from Connecticut, who competes with Abraham "Brom Bones" Van Brunt, the town rowdy, for the hand of 18-year-old Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter and sole child of a wealthy farmer. As Crane leaves a party he attended at the Van Tassel home on an autumn night, he is pursued by the Headless Horseman, who is supposedly the ghost of a Hessian trooper who had his head shot off by a stray cannonball during "some nameless battle" of the American Revolutionary War, and who "rides forth to the scene of battle in nightly quest of his head". Join us as Bear Silvershade and Derry McMahon read this favorite fall tale aloud.

A banker, Mr. Alexander Holder of Streatham makes a loan of £50,000 to a socially prominent client, who leaves the Beryl Coronet — one of the most valuable public possessions in existence — as collateral. Holder feels that he must not leave this rare and precious piece of jewellery in his personal safe at the bank, and so he takes it home with him to lock it up there. He is awakened in the night by a noise, enters his dressing room, and is horrified to see his son Arthur with the coronet in his hands, apparently trying to bend it. Holder's niece Mary comes at the sound of all the shouting and, seeing the damaged coronet, faints dead away. Three beryls are missing from it. In a panic, Mr. Holder travels to see Holmes, who agrees to take the case.

The story entails the bride of the fictional Lord Robert St. Simon disappearing on the day of their marriage. She attends (and participates in) the wedding, but disappears from the reception.

The events of the wedding day are most perplexing to Lord Robert as it seemed to him that his bride, Miss Hatty Doran of San Francisco, was full of enthusiasm about their impending marriage. St. Simon tells Holmes that he noticed a change in the young lady's mood just after the wedding ceremony. She was uncharacteristically sharp with him. The only obvious happening at the church where the wedding took place that was out of the ordinary was Hatty's little accident: she dropped her wedding bouquet and a gentleman in the front pew picked it up and handed it back to her. Is the case as "elementary" as Holmes suggests?

SEANCHAI LIBRARY'S Top 22 "Scary Stuff" Survival Strategies

We discovered tonight at Shandon's Nocturne session that the "frequent flyers" at the Seanchai Library are not only the highly educated and erudite residents that we knew them already to be, but that they possess some high level survival skills that could come in handly during a spookable emergency situation. So we thought we'd share their accumulated wisdom with you. (List in no particular order - pulled from the very active local chat from the session)

#1 - Stay away from the water

#2 - Stay away from the woods (that includes “beware of the moors...”)

#3 - Never split up

#4 - Remember where we parked

#5 - If the door is stuck, leave it stuck

#6 - When it seems that you've killed the monster, never check to see if it's really dead. It may not be quite dead. It could pull through.

#7 - Do not search the basement, especially when the power has just gone out.

# 8 - If you wake up and hear strange noises downstairs, DO NOT go check to see what it is!

#9 - Take a real weapon into the dark building.

#10 - If your car runs out of gas at night, do not go to the nearby deserted-looking house to phone for help.

#11 - Look for a hotel. There might be a light in the distance

#12 - If you're a male, get out of there as fast as possible! The only one who ever survives is the female.

#13 - If you here banjos ---- MORPH!!!

#14 - ABSOLUTELY NO sex breaks while being chased by the monster.

#15 - On no account do ANYTHING because someone dares you to.

#16 - Don't forget your flashlight.

#17 - You don't need to out run the monster, you only need to out run you friends.

#17.5 - Someone always trips when a group runs from a monster. Don't let it be You.

#17.75 - Be the tripper, not the tripped.

#18 - Don't look in magic mirrors, you fool!

#19 - Never trust anything in a web, no matter what "it" says or who sent you. In fact, if it SAYS anything, trust it even less!

The story, set in 1889, mainly consists of a young London consultant hydraulic engineer, Mr. Victor Hatherley, recounting strange happenings of the night before, first to Dr. Watson, who dresses the stump where Mr. Hatherley's thumb has been cut off, and then to Sherlock Holmes himself.

This case is one of the few where Holmes fails to bring the villains to justice. (Others are "The Five Orange Pips" and "The Hound of the Baskervilles", though in both those cases Providence exacts vengeance on the villains.)

One of the more popular Holmsian Adventures: A young woman named Helen Stoner consults the detective Sherlock Holmes about the suspicious death of her sister, Julia. One night, after conversing with her twin sister about her upcoming wedding day, Julia screamed and came to the hallway where Helen came out to see her, in Julia's dying words she said "it was the band, the speckled band!"

WEDNESDAY, September 12th @ 7:00pm: "TO ANYWHERE THAT'S WILD!" John Muir & Yosemite

An 1872 Protrait of Muir at Age 30

John Muir was a Scottish-born American naturalist, author, and early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States. His letters, essays, and books telling of his adventures in nature, especially in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, have been read by millions. His activism helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas.

In a life filled with many amazing accomplishments, Muir published six volumes of writings, all describing explorations of natural settings. Four additional books were published posthumously. Caledonia reads selections tonight from his 1912 “The Yosemite.” Presented live in Voice.

TODAY: "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle." Watson visits his friend Holmes at Christmas time and finds him contemplating a battered old hat, brought to him by the commissionaire Peterson after it and a Christmas goose had been dropped by a man in a scuffle with some street ruffians. Peterson takes the goose home to eat it, but comes back later with a glittering carbuncle. His wife has found it in the bird's crop (throat). Holmes cannot resist such an intriguing mystery, and he and Watson set out across the city to determine exactly how the jewel, stolen from the Countess of Morcar during her stay at a hotel, wound up in a goose.
