Maurice Walsh was an Irish novelist best known for the short story The Quiet Man which was later made into an Oscar-winning movie directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. Walsh was born in 1879 in Ballydonoghue near Listowel, Co. Kerry, Ireland. He was one of Ireland's best-selling authors in the 1930s.

It's that time of year again, and we cannot let *The Day Itself* (St Patrick's Day, that is) pass us by without a nod to a tradition we have observed since 2009 - the reading of  Maurice Walsh's THE QUIET MAN.

"Shawn Kelvin, a blithe young lad of 20, went to the States to seek his fortune. And 15 years thereafter he returned to his native Kerry, his blitheness sobered and his youth dried to the core, and whether he had made his fortune or whether he had not no one could be knowing for certain. For he was a quiet man, not given to talking about himself and the things he had done. A quiet man, under middle size, with strong shoulders and deep-set blue eyes below brows darker than his dark hair - that was Shawn Kelvin."

Thus begins Walsh's original short story as it was published in the Saturday Evening Post in February of 1933.  It was subsequently revised and published with other Walsh stories of the same era, the characters and contents of which were molded by Director John Ford and Screenwriter Frank S. Nugent over more than a decade into the 1952 Academy Award-winning motion picture starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, and Victor McLaglen.

A Seanchai traditional favorite, Caledonia presents Maurice Walsh's THE QUIET MAN.

Sean Kelvin comes home to Ireland from his sojourn to the "land of opportunity."  All Sean wants is  peace, and a roof he can call his own - such a contrast to his life in America.  But soon enough Sean's dearly acquired peace is shattered  . . .  he falls in love with Ellen O'Grady, sister to a local landowner and his chief antagonist.

Walsh's 1933 story was fashioned, after 10 years of effort, into an Academy-Award winning feature film starring John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, and Victor McLaughlin.

THIS WEEK: The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle

As London prepares for Christmas, newspapers report the theft of the near priceless jewel, The "Blue Carbuncle", from the hotel suite of the Countess of Morcar. John Horner, a previously convicted felon, is soon arrested for the theft. Though the police have yet to find the jewel, and despite Horner's claims of innocence, the police are sure that they have the thief - or at least one of them. Horner's record, and his presence in the Countess's room where he was cleaning a fireplace, are all the police need.

At 221B, Watson pays a visit to Holmes, finding the detective contemplating a battered old hat, one brought to him by the commissionaire Peterson. Both the hat and a Christmas goose had been dropped by a man in a scuffle with some street ruffians. Holmes is far more interested in the hat than the goose, which Peterson takes home for dinner. Although the hat bears the owner's name - Henry Baker - the police have little hope of finding the man. Peterson soon returns excited, carrying the Blue Carbuncle, claiming that the carbuncle was found in the found goose's throat. How on earth did it get there?

It is no secret that one of Caledonia's annual rituals in honor of Saint Patrick's Day, is her yearly reading (sometimes readings) of Maurice Walsh's short story that inspired John Ford to work for over a decade to adapt the story of Sean Kelvin and his Ellen into an academy Award-winning motion picture starring Maureen O'Hara and John Wayne that is beloved by many.

MONDAY, March 17th at 7:00pm: THE QUIET MAN

Yes friends, It is time for that story again:  Maurice Walsh's The Quiet Man.  It's one of Caledonia's favorite stories (written by Walsh in 1933), and one of her favorite movies ( in 1951, winning two Academy Awards).

 Sean is a quiet, peace-loving man...not above stoppin' for a moment in the fields and just watching the wind blow through the grass, and see the swell of the distant sea.  But there was no mistaking!  Sean was not lazy, just quiet.  But when he falls in head over heels for lovely, red-haired Ellen, sister to a bullying local landowner, Sean's peace is about to be sorely tested.  And everyone is about to find out just how quiet, and patient a "quiet man" can be.  (Reading this year from Walsh's less "American" version).
