WEDNESDAY, Feb 22 at 7pm "Knights of the Kitchen Table" with Faerie Maven

Narrator Joe is given a magic book (''The Book'') that transports him and two friends to King Arthur's Britain, where they find themselves confronted by a fearsome Black Knight--who's easy to defeat with some quick dodging when he's in mid-charge. Then Lancelot, Gawain, et al. happen by and take the boys for heroes--a reputation they sustain by tricking the loathsome giant who's menacing the castle into fighting the terrible dragon (Smaug) that has also just turned up. Its the beginning of a fascinating adventure for these three boys. Story in voice.

More from Persuasion this week: We learn about Anne and Captain Wentworth, and the Elliott's leave Kellynch Hall.

More than seven years prior to the events in the novel, Anne Elliot falls in love with a handsome young naval officer named Frederick Wentworth, who is intelligent and ambitious, but poor. Sir Walter, Anne's father and lord of the family estate of Kellynch, and her older sister Elizabeth are dissatisfied with her choice, maintaining that he is not distinguished enough for their family. Her older friend and mentor, Lady Russell, acting in place of Anne's deceased mother, persuades her to break off the match.

Now, aged 27 and still unmarried, Anne re-encounters her former fiancé when his sister and brother-in-law, the Crofts, take out a lease on Kellynch. Wentworth, now a captain, is wealthy from wartime victories in the Royal Navy and from prize-money for capturing enemy ships. However, he has not forgiven Anne for her rejection of him.

Seanchai's of old told stories and sang ballads. The old Irish songs relating to heroes were the foundation upon which has been raised "the splendid fabric of Erin". Your Seanchai tonight will not sing (God be praised!) but will present for your entertainment and edification two ballads of Ireland. One is the real history of the Great King Brian Boru, and the second is a conversation that may have taken place between St. Patrick and Oisin, the son of Finn MacCool and possibly Ireland's greatest poet... after his extended visit to the Fairyland of Tir na nÓg.

SUNDAY, February 12th @ 2pm: TEA TIME with Jane Austen

This week: we begin Persuasion.

Persuasion is Jane Austen's last completed novel. She began it soon after she had finished Emma, completing it in August 1816. She died, aged 41, in 1817; Persuasion was published in December that year (but dated 1818).

Besides the theme of persuasion, the novel evokes other topics, such as the Royal Navy. The significance here is that two brothers of Jane Austen used persuasion to later achieve the rank of admiral. As in Northanger Abbey, the superficial social life of Bath—well known to Jane Austen—is portrayed extensively, and serves as a background for the second volume. Persuasion marks a clear break with Austen's previous works, for the warm attitude of positive characters she portrays in stark contrast to the often dull heroine:

When Paul finds a box stuck in the hole dug for his backyard swimming pool, the only thing he knows for certain is he has to get it out. He is shocked by the sudden arrival of a strange boy named Henry who demands Paul hand over his newfound treasure. Pauls dog scares off the intruder, leaving Paul to discover the contents of the box: a ring with directions for making wishes. In part II, Paul's Aunt Vickie wears the ring for the afternoon and discovers, being afraid of the water for years, that she can swim. She looses it in the bottom of the pool, Paul's dog Clem finds it and now the dog can talk! Clem gives the ring back to Paul, and now Paul, who has been picked on by a neighborhood bully for years, discovers he can fly! There is so much more to tell so come listen to the ending with us! TUESDAY, February 7th at 7PM: Charles Dickens - Happy 200th Birthday!

Charles Dickens is thought by some to be the very first truly "modern" novelist. Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickelby, The Pickwick Papers, The Mystery of Edwin Drood and a host of others dot the literary landcscape like mighty giants, as well as their incarnations in theatre and cinema. His A Christmas Carol is the staple of Christmas where ever it is celebrated.

Tonight the Seanchai Library celebrates the centennary of Dicken's birth on February 7th, 1812. Join Elder Priestman, Derry McMahon, Caledonia Skytower and some Dickensian 100 Word Stories from Crap Mariner!

Like a wind crying endlessly through the universe, time carries away the names and deeds of conquerors and commoners alike. And all that we were, all that remains is in the memories of those who cared we came this way for a brief moment.

We all know the movie Groundhog Day about a weird time loop thingie. Tonight I'll present a story by Harlan Ellison called 'Paladin of the Lost Hour'. A story also about a strange occurence in time. And oh yeah, it was a Twilight Zone episode. Story in voice.

Kevin, a shrimpy 7th grader on a school camping trip, decides to sneak out at night to climb the legendary Divine Peak. With the school bully, Bertram, harassing him all the way they both reach the top and find ... a pair of sunglasses. Kevin's glasses have been broken by Bertram. He puts on the sunglasses and amazingly, he can see clearly. During a scuffle back at the base of the mountain, Bertram inexplicably follows Kevin's advice to "go jump in the lake." Various other things happen, all related to random comments made by Kevin. Find out what causes all of these events when Gyro shares this story in voice!

Native Hawaiian Storyteller Lani Ka Mehameha graces the Seanchai Library tonight with tales directly from the islands!

Lani has been bringing Live Voice storytelling to SecondLife for more than six years now. Her voice has been called “hypnotic” and “lilting” and “captivating”. Her writing fuses English and Hawaiian with the sounds of chants and the blending of narrative styles of both worlds. She has presented legends, chants, her stories and poetry in Europe, Asia, New Zealand and the Continental United States. She grew up in Hawaii surrounded by classical western and Hawaiian music, art and culture. She speaks French, Hawaiian and English. She has done graduate studies in Hawaiian in the Hawaiian language. As an avid supporter of sovereignty she has lent her support through her voice in song, story and speech to the perpetuation and preservation of her culture.

More from Sense and Sensibility: the lives and loves of the Dashwood sisters: prudent Elinor, expressive Marianne, with the ever adventurous young Margaret and their Mother the widowed Mrs. Dashwood along with them. The novel follows the young ladies and their Mother to their new home, a meager cottage on a distant relative's property, where they experience love, romance and heartbreak.

Jane Austen wrote the first draft of the novel in the form of a novel-in-letters sometime around 1795. The novel may be read as a parody of the full-blown romanticism and sensibility (now "sensitivity") that was fashionable around the 1790s.

Edgar Allan Poe. Born on this day in 1809. He was often drunk and always broke, but some claim it was this inner life that contributed to his wayward genius. He related to us his feverish nightmares, his macabre tales, his obsession with death. He also gave us lyrical poems of unsurpassed beauty, and he was the father of the modern detective novel. Join us tonight to celebrate this man that walked the earth for a mere 40 years and yet continues to influence the world two centuries after his death.

As the pre-eminent voice of the American Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr spoke with a voice which resounded with the thunder of the struggle of African Americans, and the passion for a dream which he saw clearly for all people.

Caledonia presents selections from his inspiring words with the full knowledge that she can never equal the power of his oratorial tradition, or the deep personal conviction he brought to his speeches. But his words alone have an inspiring power of their own. While all humankind struggles in various ways, and in various places, these words still have a power which should be shared and not forgotten.

More from Sense and Sensibility: the lives and loves of the Dashwood sisters: prudent Elinor, expressive Marianne, with the ever adventurous young Margaret and their Mother the widowed Mrs. Dashwood along with them. The novel follows the young ladies and their Mother to their new home, a meager cottage on a distant relative's property, where they experience love, romance and heartbreak.

Jane Austen wrote the first draft of the novel in the form of a novel-in-letters sometime around 1795 when she was about 19 years old, and gave it the title, Elinor and Marianne. She later changed the form to a narrative and the title to Sense and Sensibility.By changing the title, Austen added "philosophical depth" to what began as a sketch of two characters.

TUES 10 January at 7pm: "The Second Weyr" (pt 2) a Tribute to Anne McCaffrey

Along with many, many tales, one of Anne McCaffrey's most famous creations are the Dragons of Pern. Tonight, Bear Silvershade & Derry McMahon honour the memory of the beloved writer, who passed away on Nov. 21, 2011, with the second of a two-part reading of her short story, "The Second Weyr".

Tonight, young queen dragonrider Torene leads the establishment of another community in a crater far to the north and east, named Benden Weyr for the Pern colony's founder and leader Admiral Paul Benden. Torene's queen dragon rises to mate for the first time, and who she mates with decides who shall serve as the Weyrleader of the new Benden Weyr. Story in voice.

MONDAY, January 9th at 7pm: Part II - "Breadcrumbs"

The promise of magic that the winter snow brought is about to be realized, but in ways Hazel and Jack do not expect. A mirror, beings of myth, and an unexpected friend all play into the tale.

Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's “The Snow Queen,” Breadcrumbs is a story of the struggle to hold on, and the things we leave behind.

It is a New Year, winter is upon us and somehow Caledonia is feeling "Jane Austen-ish." You are invited to join her for tea in the Library's comfy downstairs for selections from Austen's works.

This week: Sense and Sensibility

Jane Austen is considered a pioneer of the romance genre of novels, and for the realism portrayed in her novels, is one the most widely read writers in English literature. A work of romantic fiction, Sense and Sensibility is set in southwest England in 1792 through 1797^, and portrays the life and loves of the Dashwood sisters, daughters of their father Henry's second wife, Mrs. Dashwood. The sisters are starkly different from each other; Elinor is the epitome of prudence and self-control while Marianne embodies emotion and enthusiasm. Elinor, Marianne, and their younger sister, Margaret, are left in reduced circumstances when their father dies and his estate is passed onto their half-brother, John.
