THURSDAY December 21st at 7pm: The Homecoming - A Christmas Story

The Homecoming : A Novel About Spencer's Mountain

[long story tonight! 1:20]

The Homecoming - A Christmas Story with Shandon Loring
It is remembered in my family that on Christmas Eve of 1933 my father was late arriving home. That, along with the love he and my mother bestowed upon their eight redheaded offspring, is fact. The rest is fiction.
ALL day the cold Virginia sky had hung low over Walton's Mountain. It was a leaden, silent, moist presence. It promised snow before the fall of night.
This morning Olivia had gone to the upstairs hall where she kept her Christmas Cactus in a spot where the winter sun filtered in through the window.

Friday June 1st at 7pm: SURF NAKED!

SURF NAKED! A Fail-Proof How-to Guide to Surfing for Adults Only!
Most surfing guides teach you to become a clique member. You are taught to think you are a kook, then, a Barney, then, an expert asshole local. Good news: there is no social strata; there is no ideal. You can learn to surf by having the right equipment, discipline, and consistency. Basically, if you purchase the equipment and surf every single day you can and keep at it, you will get it. SURFING NAKED means you go without inhibition. You embody the charge. Join Shandon tonight for a wonderful look at how to learn to surf, and how to learn a something about life at the same time.

THE BEACH BOYS Are Coming!!!

The Virtual "Big Rigs" rolled up (in the form of Coz OKelly's inventory) and the gear has been offloaded, road cases cracked open and loaded-in, cables run, line check done ... and the Seanchai Library is transformed!  It is a Concert Hall ready for YOU and your virtual friends to come rock out to the Sounds of Summer, tomorrow (Saturday) at 2pm when Lighting Productions brings their BEACH BOYS TRIBUTE to Imagination Island to benefit the Community Virtual Library (CVL) - Our Home!

Bust a move, catch a wave, listen to a story ... and then come back again on Sunday when it happens all over again with DJ Derry McMahon's Rockin' Beach Party.  Check out previous posts and the Welcome Summer Weekend tab for more!

Welcome Summer Weekend - May 19th & 20th

Even in the virtual world the greener seasons are stretching their pixels and awaking thoughts of sunny, summer pursuits. The Seanchai Library embraces this change of seasons as the perfect time to celebrate their home in the Community Virtual Library (CVL) Estate. Saturday, May 19th and Sunday, May 20th the Seanchai Library will host a Welcome Summer Weekend! with a variety of summer themed events to benefit their home estate, serving residents and library professionals on and off the Second Life Grid.

Saturday, May 19th will begin at 1pm with summer stories by the Seanchai Staff. At 2pm Lightning Productions’ will present their tribute to The Beach Boys in concert, followed by a few more tales of sun, sand, and surf at 3pm. Sunday, May 20th continues the celebration with stories at 4pm, followed by a Beach Dance Party with DJ Derry McMahon at 5pm. A special “Warm Up for the Weekend” session of surf stories will be presented by Shandon Loring at 7pm on Friday, May 18th. All events are free to residents, with donations accepted to benefit the CVL.

In addition to the events, the scenic parcel on Imagination Island will be fitted out with picnics, blankets and other trappings of summer. Chief among these features will be “The Narrows” – a surf wave running along the North border of the sim from the creations of noted Second Life surf creators Heather Goodlife and Sebastian Saramango. “The Narrows” features perilous off-sim rocks, a shark, a kraken, and free surfboards so everyone can “catch the wave.” Residents are encouraged to enjoy the summer features of the sim all weekend long. Imagination Island is a “mature” rated sim.

All Welcome Summer Weekend! Events will take place at the Seanchai Library on Imagination Island in the Community Virtual Library Estate in Second Life and all times listed are SLT - http://slurl.com/secondlife/Imagination%20Island/46/210/28

TUESDAY, February 7th at 7PM: Charles Dickens - Happy 200th Birthday!

Charles Dickens is thought by some to be the very first truly "modern" novelist.  Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickelby, The Pickwick Papers, The Mystery of Edwin Drood and a host of others dot the literary landcscape like mighty giants, as well as their incarnations in theatre and cinema. His A Christmas Carol is the staple of Christmas where ever it is celebrated.

Tonight the Seanchai Library celebrates the centennary of Dicken's birth on February 7th, 1812. Join Elder Priestman, Derry McMahon, Caledonia Skytower and some Dickensian 100 Word Stories from Crap Mariner!

Check out today's Google Doodle in honor of Mr. Dickens and click on the doodle to check out some cool links.

Great article this month in the Smithsonian about the Dickens Centennary! Going Mad for Charles Dickens

Thursday January 26th at 9pm: "Legends of Hawaii"

Native Hawaiian Storyteller Lani Ka Mehameha graces the Seanchai Library tonight with tales directly from the islands!
Lani has been bringing Live Voice storytelling to SecondLife for more than six years now. Her voice has been called “hypnotic” and “lilting” and “captivating”. Her writing fuses English and Hawaiian with the sounds of chants and the blending of narrative styles of both worlds. She has presented legends, chants, her stories and poetry in Europe, Asia, New Zealand and the Continental United States. She grew up in Hawaii surrounded by classical western and Hawaiian music, art and culture. She speaks French, Hawaiian and English. She has done graduate studies in Hawaiian in the Hawaiian language. As an avid supporter of sovereignty she has lent her support through her voice in song, story and speech to the perpetuation and preservation of her culture.

THE SOULFUL POET

THURSDAY NIGHT November 17th
6:00pm to 6:30pm SLT
HOSTED OPEN MICROPHONE
The Irish Seanchai’s of old were storytellers and historians, bards and poets.
In this tradition this Thursday night the Seanchai Library will be presenting a special 30-minute event titled “The Soulful Poet”, highlighting songs that tell a story. This will be a Live Voice, open-mic event hosted by Gimmya Doobie. Since this is a kick-off event, the first half will be introductions and Doobie reading different selections. Then the mic will be opened to guests. So bring a poem or song and come share your “soul” with us. Or just come and listen to the presentations!
(this event will be followed by Shandon Loring live storytelling at 7pm)
All selections should be about 30 seconds to 3 minutes long.
(as part of the fun, be aware that anyone that goes over 3 minutes runs the risk of being "hooked" off the stage SL style - call it sudden death poetry!)
WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO HEAR
Songs you hear everyday are very often poetic stories set to music. Listen to some of your favorite soulful songs that tell a story, even a very short story; get a copy of the lyrics, read them to yourself as you would a poem. Without music, but with a “poets soul”, with a "storytellers passion", with feeling! Now be brave and come share the words and your voice with us!
To help you get started:
Consider songs by:
Joan Baez, Shane McGowan, Dropkick Murphys, Doug Paisley, Jubals Lawyer, Blue Moon Rising, The Breakmen, Dave Murphy, and of course many others...
Cruise the Google highway looking for poetry and song lyrics:

http://www.azlyrics.com/

Give a listen to an internet radio station,
then look for lyrics to songs that "speak to you":

"A CHRISTMAS CAROL" is Coming!

Don't be caught snoozing!  The Annual Seanchai Library presentation of  Charles Dicken's classic is coming soon!  Embrace the Spirits of Christmas!

Info Island International, Second Life – The Seanchai Library Storytellers will reprise their holiday presentation, for a third year, of Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol in live voice on Saturday, December 11 and Tuesday, December at 7pm at the Seanchai Library on Info Island International, and Sunday, December 19 at 3pm at the Fruit Island Estate with donations benefiting the Community Virtual Library in Second Life.

This annual event had its beginnings in 2008.  The Library’s home was then in the West of Ireland Charity Estate and they had just concluded their first large-scale multi-reader event – a presentation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.  “We all looked at each other and said ‘Christmas Carol.  Why not?’” said Head Librarian McMahon.  The presentation proved to be popular, inspiring annual encore presentations.  “Last year we had a capacity crowd attending at the library”, reported Mc Mahon.

Aoife Lorefield, adapted the Dicken’s novel for the presentation and is the creative force majeur behind the production.  Lorefield’s vision of A Christmas Carol is of a metaphorical carol sung by the entire community, cast and audience alike.  “This year I wanted to get inside the soul of the work” said Lorefield, whose all new set is a remarkable series of changing interior settings that will transport the audience through Scrooge’s ghostly journey of redemption.

The performance will feature a mix of familiar Seanchai voices, guests, and friends.  Chief Storyteller Shandon Loring will reprise his role as “Ebeneezer Scrooge”, the cold-hearted, tight fisted, greedy man, who despises all things which promote happiness. Elder Priestman will once more lend his warmth to the story as “Bob Cratchit,” Scrooge’s underpaid clerk and father of Tiny Tim. The rest of the ensemble includes popular DJ Spyot Demina as Scrooge’s nephew Fred; Seanchai Librarian Derry McMahon as the Ghost of Christmas Past; the role of the Ghost of Christmas Present will be voiced by Photographer and Storyteller Bear Silvershade; Aoife Lorefield will voice Marley’s Ghost.  McMahon, Lorefield along with Storytellers Marian Dragovar and Caledonia Skytower will provide narration and play multiple small roles throughout.

All will be read live in voice.  All the performers are volunteers and donations are accepted to support the Community Virtual Library.

The Community Virtual Library is made up of Info Island, Info Island International, Imagination Island and Cybrary City II and provides free library resources and services to the residents of Second Life.
