WEDNESDAY, September 27th at 7pm: CALLAHAN'S CROSSTIME SALOON Concludes

CALL FOR THE LAST ROUND - Corwyn Allen shares selections from Spider Robinson’s 1999 anthology.

"Set'em up, barkeep!" We step up to Callahan's chalk line one more time for one last round of adventures in weirdness and wisdom.

Callahan's is a one-of-a-kind bar with a colorful batch of regulars who tell stories, exchange terrible puns, and meet strangers—human and alien alike—who are drawn to this 'saloon' where "shared pain is lessened, shared joy is increased."

WEDNESDAY, September 20th at 7pm: CALLAHAN'S CROSSTIME SALOON Continues

Corwyn Allen continues selections from Spider Robinson’s 1999 anthology.

Nobody's perfect. But Spider comes pretty damned close.
- Ben Bova

Spider Robinson, winner of three Hugos and a Nebula, was born in the Bronx and raised on Long Island, and has been a Canadian resident for 30 years. Holder of a bachelor's degree in English from the State University of New York, he worked as a folksinger and journalist before publishing his first story in Analog in 1973. He now lives with his wife Jeanne Robinson (co-author of the Hugo- and Nebula-winning Stardance trilogy) on an island outside Vancouver, B.C., where they raise and exhibit hopes.

Eleven of his 31 books are set in Callahan's Place, a fabulous tavern founded by a time traveler, where puns flow as freely as beer, and smell far worse. The most recent is Callahan's Con [Tor July 2003]. He has contributed a regular editorial column, "Future Tense," to Canada's national newspaper, The Globe & Mail, since 1995. In 2000, he released Belaboring the Obvious, a CD of original music with the legendary Amos Garrett ("Midnight at the Oasis") on lead guitar.

WEDNESDAY, September 13th at 7pm: More from CALLAHAN'S CROSSTIME SALOON

If one were given the task of creating Spider Robinson from scratch, the best way to do it would be to snatch James Joyce from history, force-feed him Marx Brothers films and good jazz for the better part of a decade, then turn him loose on a world badly in need of a look at itself.

WEDNESDAY, September 6th at 7pm: Selections from CALLAHAN'S CROSSTIME SALOON

Corwyn Allen begins selections from Spider Robinson’s 1999 anthology.

The titular saloon is a haven for lost souls; a place where the patrons come for one drink and a chance for a second – but only if they offer an unburdening toast at the fireplace. Mike Callahan, the owner, never judges but sometimes advises in as few words as possible.

In the first story in the collection, Callahan thinks he’s heard it all until one day, The Guy With The Eyes comes in.

He spends an hour nursing his first drink, then steps up to the fireplace and unburdens himself with the news that he’s an alien, a harbinger of doom for Earth, who will be returning home in just a couple of hours. But when he does, his masters will destroy the planet, convinced human kind is a cancer. Only he’s no longer convinced that this is true, and no longer wants to see the world destroyed…

MONDAY, May 2n at 7 pm: TRIFECTA OF SCI-FI DELIGHTS

Gyro digs deep into his seemingly endless collection of periodicals and anthology to bring three classic short stories to the story floor.

"The Guy with the Eyes" from The Callihan Chronicles by Spider Robinson, 1997
It's just another day in a bar where your drinking companion might be a time lord, a Martian, a robot or even an ordinary human.

"Hobbits" from Analog Magazine, Feb 1999
Little Evan dreamed an airplane "with monsters in it" crashed near his house on stormy night.  Now there's a hole in his front yard and he says "hobbits" live in it.  Just don't expect Bilbo or Frodo this time.

IF there is sufficient time left,
"Take a Deep Breath" by Arthur C. Clarke from Microcosmic Tales, 1957
There's been an accident on the space station.  Your compartment's air is running out.  Air and safety are only a few feet away.  In between is total vacuum and you don't have a space suit.
