Tonight we begin the final week of our August bouquet of storied adventures with  The Wind from the Sun by Arthur C. Clarke.

The Wind from the Sun is the title of a 1972 collection of science fiction short stories by British writer Arthur C. Clarke. Some of the stories originally appeared in a number of different publications. A part of the book was included in CD on board the Planetary Society's solar sail, Cosmos. The titular story is a suspenseful tale of a race using spacecraft that use only the pressure of sunlight as propulsion.

TUESDAY, November 7th at 7pm: Selections from TALES FROM THE WHITE HART

Tales from the White Hart is a collection of short stories by science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke, in the "club tales" style.

The style and nature of the stories was inspired by the Jorkens stories of the writer Lord Dunsany, whom Clarke admired and with whom he corresponded, a fact humorously acknowledged by Clarke in his introduction to the first Jorkens omnibus volume.

According to Clarke's preface to the book, the book was his third collection of short stories, which were written between 1953 and 1957 in such diverse spots as New York, Miami, Colombo, London and Sydney.

MONDAY, July 15th at 7:00PM: "THE CITY AND THE STARS" Final Moments

Gyro shares the final moments of Alvin's odyssey from the classic novella from legendary author Arthur C. Clarke - "The City and the Stars."  Having left the surly bonds of Earth and learns more than he bargained for.  Alvin's discoveries reunite Diaspar with Lys. He then sends the ship, under the command of the robot, to search for the long-lost people of the Empire. He does not wish to search himself - even if there are human remnants in the Galaxy, they are probably decadent - and he has work to do on Earth. Even the environment, he hopes, can be revived in the exciting conclusion (final parts).

Gyro will also share some additional short gems from his capacious library of classic Science Fiction.

Gyro concludes the final chapters of the classic novella from legendary author Arthur C. Clarke - "The City and the Stars" takes place a billion years in the future, in the city of Diaspar. By this time, the Earth is so old that the oceans have gone and humanity has all but left. As far as the people of Diaspar know, they are the only city left on the planet. Except Alvin, a "Unique", has discovered that they are not.  Having escaped Diaspar and discovered a very different life in Lys, he works to bring about planet shattering changes to the lives of all on Earth in the exciting conclusion (presented in two parts).

Gyro continues Alvin's journey on an Earth we hardly recognize in a future long ahead ... are these issues that are alien to us today? Gyro will share another episode tonight, and then be back in July to conclude the adventure live, in voice!

Arthur C. Clarke was born in Minehead in 1917. During the Second World War he served as a radar instructor for the RAF, rising to the rank of flight-lieutenant. After the war, he entered King’s college, London taking, in 1948, his Bsc in physics and mathematics with first class honours. One of the most respected of all science-fiction writers, he has won Kalinga Prize, the Aviation Space-Writers’ Prize and the Westinghouse Science Writing Prize. He also shared an Oscar nomination with Stanley Kubrick for the screenplay of 2001: A Space Odyssey, which was based on his story.

Gyro continues, picking up just as our hero Alvin makes his escape from , not looking back.  Once out of Diaspar, Alvin finds that one other human habitation remains on Earth. In contrast to technological Diaspar, Lys is a vast green oasis shielded by mountains from the worldwide desert. Its people are not stored and recreated technologically, but naturally conceive, are born, age, and die.

A classic novella by one of the great names in Science Fiction.
