THURSDAY January 19th at 7pm: SHADOWS OF POE

- LIVE STORYTELLING -

SHADOWS OF POE

Poe. More need be said? Probably not, but tonight's session is a bit different. In celebration of Edgar Allan Poe's birthday we are presenting short stories inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe. I believe you will be intrigued by what tonight's authors have created as interpretative tribute to some of Poe's best known tales. I can confidently say that Poe himself would have been very proud.

TUESDAY, January 17th at 7pm: COLD CLAY Begins

It’s autumn in Shady Hollow, and residents are looking forward to harvest feasts. But then a rabbit discovers a grisly crop: the bones of a moose.

Soon, the owner of Joe’s Mug is dragged out of the coffeeshop and questioned by the police about the night his wife walked out of his life–and Shady Hollow–forever. It seems like an open-and-shut case, but dogged reporter Vera Vixen doesn’t believe gentle Joe is a killer. She’ll do anything to prove his innocence. . .even if it means digging into secrets her neighbours would rather leave buried.

Faerie Maven-Pralou reads the second book in the Shady Hollow series by Juneau Black, in which some long-buried secrets come to light, throwing suspicion on a beloved local denizen.

TUESDAY, January 10th at 7pm: More STORIES FROM LIFE

Caledonia returns to the Fireside Room with more tales that could easily be fiction, but come from real life.

Tonight: the long and winding road behind the legend of King Arthur? Who was he? Where did he come from?  Honestly, we still don't know. But the path that lead from there through books and poems, movies and the expansion of a mythos is interesting to explore.

Presented live, on Stream.

Take the stairs down to the Fireside room from the Main Story Floor.

THURSDAY November 24th at 10am: ALICES RESTAURANT MASSACREE

ALICE'S RESTAURANT REVISITED

The song is one of Arlo Guthrie's most prominent works, based on a true incident from his life that began on Thanksgiving Day 1965 with a citation for littering, and ended with the refusal of the U.S. Army to draft him because of his conviction for that crime. The ironic punch line of the story is that, in the words of Guthrie, "I'm sittin' here on the Group W bench 'cause you want to know if I'm moral enough to join the Army - burn women, kids, houses and villages - after bein' a litterbug." The final part of the song is an encouragement for the listeners to sing along, to resist the draft, and to end war.

The "song" is in fact a spoken monologue, presented by Shandon Loring today for your listening pleasure or just to groan at and be Thankful when it's over.

THURSDAY November 10th at 7pm: ON THE EDGE OF DREAM Women In Celtic Myth & Legend

THE ROLE OF WOMEN IN CELTIC HISTORY & STORIES

ON THE EDGE OF DREAM

Women In Celtic Myth & Legend

Weaving fragments of ancient epic texts and the richness of oral tradition, tonight's stories feature the powerful, wild, and wise women of Celtic mythology. The women of Celtic literature are here celebrated for their ingenuity, spirit, physical courage, and deep instinctual natures.

Retold for the modern reader, in earthy, poetic language, these haunting, deeply moving tales exert a primal pull, awakening ancient memories buried deep within our collective unconscious.

Tonight:

THE ROMANCE OF MIS AND DUBH RUIS

He thought that if he could serenade her with his harp, he might be able to woo her. This, he hoped, would heal her wounded soul and cure her madness. Mis was, indeed, transfixed by the sound of Dubh Ruis's harp. She was also transfixed by his naked body as he played the sweet songs.

BLODEUWEDD - A woman made of flowers

A woman named Arianrhod places a ‘tynged’ on her son, Lleu Llaw Gyffes, that Lleu could never marry a human woman. But Lleu had an uncle named Gwydion, a legendary wizard, who creates for Lleu a wife made of flowers and named her Blodeuwedd. She was created from the flowers of the oak, the flowers of the broom, and the flowers of the meadowsweet. Blodeuwedd and Lleu get married, but trouble is soon on the horizon. Blodeuwedd has fallen in love with Gronw Pebr, a warrior and hunter from Penllyn.
