SUNDAY, November 1st at 1:30pm: TEA TIME at Baker Street Returns to "The Valley of Fear"
To catch up, here's where we have been ...
The great Detective Sherlock Holmes solves a case in England which leads to a secondary story in Vermissa Valley in the US. Sherlock Holmes must solve the mysterious murder of a Mr. Douglas of Birlstone Manor but finds that this is only the tip of the iceberg. Holmes and Watson travel to Birlstone and investigations ensue.
Holmes, Watson, with Inspectors MacDonald and Mason hide out in the garden to watch the moat and catch Cecil Barker fishing something out of it; a bundle of clothes weighed down by the missing dumb-bell. The clothes belong to an American who has been seen in Birlstone recently and whose bike was found nearby. A label in the clothes tell the detectives that they come from Vermissa Valley; V. V..
But Holmes has a greater revelation yet. When they are back inside he calls on Mr Douglas to tell his own story. The others are shocked as the supposedly murdered man enters, he has been hiding in a priest hole the last few days. The dead body is in fact Ted Baldwin, sent to kill Douglas but who ended up dead himself. Douglas and Barker made it seem that Douglas was dead in the hope of avoiding further attempts on Douglas's life. Baldwin has the same brand on his arm as they belonged to the same society but unfortunately Douglas could not remove his wedding ring to make the deception complete.
Douglas gives Dr Watson a bundle of papers which tells the next part of story; The Scowrers.
On the train to Vermissa Valley, John McMurdo meets Scanlan, a fellow member of the Eminent Order of Freemen. He confides to Scanlan that he is on the run from the law. Scanlan tells McMurdo to look up the Bodymaster of the Vermissa Lodge 341, Black Jack McGinty, who is also connected to a band of killers called the Scowrers. McMurdo moves in with the Shafters and immediately falls for the daughter of the family, Ettie, but learns from her father that she is seeing another man, Ted Baldwin of the Scowrers. McMurdo also learns that the Scowrers and Freemen are one and the same and when he mentions that he is a Freeman Mr Shafter throws him out. When Baldwin confronts him McMurdo quickly heads for McGinty's place to establish himself as a fellow Freeman and makes a good impression. McGinty makes peace between the two men.

The Tea Time Crew continues their journey Sherlock Holmes into THE VALLEY OF FEAR.This week we learn more about the legendary valley of fear - referring to a rough mining community in the United States. We will learn of Young Jack McMurdo, who gains a reputation as a tough counterfeiter and Freemen Lodge member on the lam from murder charges in Chicago. In the Vermissa Valley coal mining area, McGinty rules Scowrers, the local Lodge 341 who extort, murder, and exchange vicious deeds with nearby Lodges, and whose brand is a circle inside a square.

By studying the soles of Cecil Barker's slippers, Holmes ascertains that Barker used the sole of his own shoe to make the mark on the window sill so as to give the appearance that someone exited that way. Back at their lodgings in the village, Holmes tells Watson that Cecil Barker and Mrs. Douglas are certainly lying but that why they are lying is not yet clear. When a shotgun is fired at close range, the sound is muffled. The housekeeper heard what she described as a door slamming half an hour before the alarm was raised. Holmes believes that what the housekeeper actually heard was the shot fired when the murder really took place. White Mason, the Sussex detective, and MacDonald report that they have traced a bicycle found on the grounds of the house to an American staying at a guest house. It seems likely that he was the assailant since the gun used in the murder was of an American make, but there is no sign of the man.
And what is "The Valley of Fear"? This week we conclude Part 1 of Conan Doyle's last Sherlock Holmes novel, before moving ahead to the past in part two next week.

SUNDAY, September 27th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME at Baker Street
Holmes, Watson, and MacDonald travel to Birlstone village in Sussex. John Douglas was murdered at around midnight and had been shot in the head. The house is an old manor with a moat and drawbridge. A man named Cecil Barker was staying at the house on the night the murder took place and was a regular guest of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas. A sawn-off shotgun was found at the scene. It appeared to have been fired at close range which caused the head to have been completely blown to pieces.
Cecil Barker says that he believes a secret society of men pursued Douglas and that this fear for his life is what prompted him to live in such a quiet area of England. Mr. Douglas married his wife when he came to England five years previously. He had been married before and that first wife died of typhoid. Douglas had met and worked with Cecil Barker in America for a time and then suddenly left for Europe. Both Cecil Barker and Mrs. Douglas were aware that some danger overhung Douglas and that this danger was connected with some episode of his life in America. Mrs. Douglas says that she had heard her husband mention "The Valley of Fear".

The Valley of Fear is the fourth and final Sherlock Holmes
novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is loosely based on the Molly Maguires and
Pinkerton agent James McParland. The story was first published in the Strand
Magazine between September 1914 and May 1915.
Sherlock Holmes receives a mysterious cipher message from a
man who writes under the pseudonym Fred Porlock, an agent to Professor
Moriarty. Porlock occasionally sends Holmes insider information. Moriarty is
blameless in the eyes of the law, but Holmes knows him to be "the
controlling brain of the underworld." Together Holmes and Watson decipher
Porlock's message which relates that a man named John Douglas, residing at Birlstone,
is in danger.
