Flatland was written in 1884 by a school teacher using fiction to explain geometry.It concerns the adventures of Mr. A. Square who lives in a universe made of a flat plane. For Mr. Square concepts of "up" and "down" don't even exist until he visits Lineland which has only Left and Right and later is visited by a being from the world of 3 dimensions.
