WEDNESDAY, November 1st at 7pm: DIA DE LOS MUERTOS ~ "Day of the Dead"

Día de los Muertos is a time-honored holiday with deep cultural roots. The traditional Mexico and in many places throughout the United States, Día de los Muertos and its rituals date back thousands of years, where it was celebrated by the Olmec, Toltex, Mexika, and Maya. Poets and authors have commemorated Día de los Muertos by writing about childhood memories, their families - living and dead, and the foods and traditions associated with the holiday.
commemoration, celebrated in

“Terra-cotta shrines for loved ones
Who died to hurt us. We rehearse
Their tunes & display their favorite
Colors in a labyrinth of unwinding rooms…”

THURSDAY October 26th at 7pm: TRUE LIFE GHOST STORIES

"strange happenings and ghostly 'stay-behinds'"
TRUE LIFE GHOST STORIES

What exactly is a ghost? Something people dream up in their cups or on a sickbed? Far from it. Ghosts - apparitions of "dead" people or sound associated with invisible human beings - are the surviving memories of people. They are people who have not been able to make the transition from their physical state into the world of spirits. They are the souls we will visit with tonight at the Seanchai Library.

WEDNESDAY, October 25th at 7pm: SOMEWHERE IN MY MIND THERE IS A PAINTING BOX

Aoife Lorefield reads Charles de Lint’s 2002 short story spin-off from his The Cats of Tanglewood series, and first published as a part of The Green Man: Tales from the Mythic Forest, edited by Ellen Datlow & Terri Windling

In this tale, Lillian, the protagonist from Cats is now in her mid-teens and hungry for her life to broaden; she longs to be an artists, but has neither the money nor training to achieve her desire. Then, whilst wandering in the forest one day, she discovers a paint box, long abandoned. Examining it, she recognizes the name on one of the panels with the box as that of  an artist famed for his pieces depicting the forest, but who disappeared years earlier, along with his apprentice.

Later, Lillian encounters the artist’s apprentice, looking not a day older than when he and the artists vanished. He tells her a tale of their having crossed into another realm, and her past experiences with magic allow her to accept the story. That world, the apprentice explains, is so beautiful neither he nor the artist wanted to return – and Lillian finds herself on the tip of a bittersweet voyage of discovery.

THURSDAY October 19th at 7pm: THE HAUNTERS and the HAUNTED

"JOIN US AT OCTOBERVILLE!"
THE HAUNTERS and the HAUNTED

No one would stay in this London house more than a few hours. Each one who would talk about what had happened had experienced something different. Disembodied hands and feet and footsteps and all shapes and colors and sizes of presences seek to terrify anyone who stays in this house. The malignant spirit of a wronged husband wreaking vengeance against the house and all who dwell within it - even from beyond the grave!

An 1843 story that is the archetype for all Haunted House stories to follow, from the author who gave us the famous opening line "It was a dark and stormy night.."

TUESDAY, October 17th at 7pm: THE WATER MIRROR Continues

"Kai Meyer's engaging fantasy portrays Venice as a city alive with wonder--stone lions pad with heavy paws on the canal banks and sometimes fly (as steeds for the Venetian Guard); the canals are full of mermaids with wide shark jaws, and the island city has been under siege by Egypt for 36 years. Only the power of The Flowing Queen, the mysterious spirit of the waters, has kept the city safe. But now the essence of the Queen has been stolen by traitors within the government, and the powers of Hell are offering a blood treaty.

"... American readers of this German bestseller will be reminded of Cornelia Funke's The Thief Lord, by the intriguing mix of actual Venetian locations and a fantasy underworld, and also Neil Gaiman's Coraline, by the matter-of-fact acceptance of grotesqueries. In this unusually short (for fantasy) initial volume, Kai Meyer has planted enough backstory, hints, foreshadowings, and unanswered questions to fuel several sequels-- Amazon Review - Patty Campbell

THURSDAY October 12th at 7pm: ZOMBIES!! The Grave Gives Up

"a voice from the dead"
ZOMBIES!! The Grave Gives Up

IT WAS A melancholy night. Dampness impregnated the sultry autumn air. The light of the moon filtered faintly through a huge black cloud that hung over the face of the heavens. Somewhere from the great swamp near the graveyard a whippoor-will sobbed; and the throbbing sound echoed the anguish in the heart of Gordon Lane.

WEDNESDAY, October 11th at 7pm: THE WATER MIRROR Continues

Faerie Maven-Pralou continuesKai Meyer’s tale of magic.

Merle is apprenticed to a maker of magic mirrors. She even has one of her own, with a surface of water into which she can reach without ever getting wet – magic being a relatively common thing in Venice. Meanwhile, her friend Serafin, once a master thief, now works for a weaver of magic cloth.

Both Merle and Serafin accept the wonders of the city, from the mermaids in the canal to the stone lions on which the city guards ride on their patrols. But all is not well; beyond the walls of the city, the Egyptian Empire is laying siege, an army of mummy warriors and flying sunbarks held at bay by the power of the Flowing Queen, which runs through the city’s canals and hold the enemy forces at bay.

Then Merle and Serafin overhear a plot to capture the Flowing Queen and render the city defenseless. And while no-one actually knows what the Queen looks like, they set out to protect and / or rescue her. In doing so, they must ally themselves with the Ancient Traitor and journey into the realm of Dark Reflections…

TUESDAY, October 10th at 7pm: THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW

"In the bosom of one of those spacious coves which indent the eastern shore of the Hudson, there lies a small market town known by the name of Tarry Town."

From this tranquil beginning, Washington Irving spins a tale of ambition, rivalry, vanity, and of  legendary haunt which comes to life.  And amongst the weaving of dreamy language and exquisite atmosphere, Irving spins the tale of one of his most memorable characters - Ichabod Crane.

Caledonia shares the legend tonight, Live in voice.

SUNDAY, October 8th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME at Baker Street

Seanchai Library continues to share tales from The Casebook of Sherlock Holmes, the final set of twelve Sherlock Holmes short stories first published in the Strand Magazine between October 1921 and April 1927.
This week: The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger

Holmes is visited by Mrs. Merrilow, a landlady from South Brixton who has an unusual lodger who never shows her face. She saw it once accidentally and it was hideously mutilated. This woman, formerly very quiet, has recently taken to cursing in the night, shouting "Murder, murder!" and "You cruel beast! You monster!" Also, her health has taken a turn for the worse, and she is wasting away. Mrs. Merrilow has brought this case to Holmes’s attention as her tenant, Mrs. Ronder, will not involve the clergy or the police in something that she would like to say. She has told her landlady to mention Abbas Parva, knowing that Holmes would understand the reference.

Unique among the canon, this story does not involve an eminent crime, but one that has occurred long since, whose sinister details are revealed as part of a confession.

BONUS:

The Case of Lady Sannox is a short story by Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle (non-Holmesian) that features an arrogant surgeon, Douglas Stone, who is in love with the married Lady Sannox, one of the most beautiful women in London. On his way to a rendezvous with her, the surgeon is asked by a Turkish man to operate on the latter's wife, who has cut her lip with a poison envenomed scimitar. The doctor is informed the woman will die if the poison is not cut out.
