THURSDAY December 1st at 7pm: JOULUTARINA - A Christmas Story

A Christmas Story
JOULUTARINA
part one of three

This is the story of how an orphan called Nikolas became Santa Claus. Many years ago, in Lapland, a boy named Nikolas is orphaned when his family are killed in an accident. The heads of the families in the village meet to decide his future and, as life in the arctic is difficult, it is decided that as no one family could care for him permanently, they would raise him communally, with each family taking him for one year and then moving him on to the next. Grateful, Nikolas begins whittling toys out of wood as a gift which, each Christmas, he leaves for the family that cared for him. It becomes a tradition from then on, with Nikolas never forgetting the children of those families that received him each year. When a blight hits the village, and none of the families can afford to take him in for the next year, he is taken in by grumpy hermit Iisakki as his carpenter's apprentice. Iisakki works him hard but Nikolas is clever and quick to learn, and Iisakki gradually grows to love Nikolas as his own son. Nikolas begins to live more and more for the spirit of Christmas with each passing year and it becomes his life and as he grows old he becomes the figure known as Santa Claus.

TUESDAY, November 29th at 7pm: SERAFINA AND THE TWISTED STAFF Continues

A mysterious series of attacks test Serafina's role as Biltmore's protector, culminating in a tragedy that tears Serafina's best friend, Braeden Vanderbilt, from her side. Heartbroken, she flees.

Deep in the forest, she comes face-to-face with the evil infecting Biltmore--and discovers its reach is far greater than she'd ever imagined. All the humans and animals of the Blue Ridge Mountains are in terrible danger. For Serafina to defeat this new evil before it engulfs her beloved home, she must search deep inside herself and embrace the destiny that has always awaited her.

THURSDAY NOVEMBER 24th at 10am: ALICE'S RESTAURANT MASSACREE

ALICE'S RESTAURANT REVISITED
The song is one of Arlo Guthrie's most prominent works, based on a true incident from his life that began on Thanksgiving Day 1965 with a citation for littering, and ended with the refusal of the U.S. Army to draft him because of his conviction for that crime. The ironic punch line of the story is that, in the words of Guthrie, "I'm sittin' here on the Group W bench 'cause you want to know if I'm moral enough to join the Army - burn women, kids, houses and villages - after bein' a litterbug." The final part of the song is an encouragement for the listeners to sing along, to resist the draft, and to end war.

The "song" is in fact a spoken monologue, presented by Shandon Loring today for your listening pleasure or just to groan at and be Thankful when it's over.

TUESDAY, November 22nd at 7PM: SERAFINA & THE TWISTED STAFF Continues

What reviewers are saying ...

"Beatty continues to build a fascinating magical world, the Blue Ridge Mountains and Biltmore Estate developing beyond mere settings into characters themselves. Each place reveals history and clues to Serafina's life and those of other gifted, mysterious beings. Even better than its predecessor, a sequel that delivers nonstop thrills from beginning to end."  ~ Kirkus Reviews

RANSOM OF RED CHIEF
and other tales by O. Henry

It looked like a good thing: but wait till I tell you. We were down South, in Alabama--Bill Driscoll and myself-when this kidnapping idea struck us. It was, as Bill afterward expressed it, 'during a moment of temporary mental apparition'; but we didn't find that out till later.

SEANCHAI LATE NIGHT @ 9PM

WEDNESDAY, November 16th at 7PM: FOR THE LOVE OF BILLY!

Dubbed “the most popular poet in America” by Bruce Weber in the New York Times, Billy Collins is famous for conversational, witty poems that welcome readers with humor but often slip into quirky, tender or profound observation on the everyday, reading and writing, and poetry itself. John Updike praised Collins for writing “lovely poems...Limpid, gently and consistently startling, more serious than they seem, they describe all the worlds that are and were and some others besides.”

But Collins has offered a slightly different take on his appeal, admitting that his poetry is “suburban, it’s domestic, it’s middle class, and it’s sort of unashamedly that.” Collins’s level of fame is almost unprecedented in the world of contemporary poetry: his readings regularly sell out, and he received a six-figure advance when he moved publishers in the late 1990s. He served two terms as the US Poet Laureate, from 2001-2003, was New York State Poet Laureate from 2004-2006, and is a regular guest on National Public Radio programs.

TUESDAY, November 15th at 7PM: SERAFINA AND THE TWISTED STAFF Continues

Last Week: we joined Serafina on one of her nocturnal prowls through the forest, some two weeks after book one's conclusion. This time, Serafina encountered a strange and terrifying figure, and then she was attacked by the vicious wolfhounds under his control. Even worse, she's convinced that the stranger is not alone, that he has sent his accomplice into Biltmore in disguise.

New guests have arrived at the Biltmore, as the December holidays approach. A mysterious series of attacks will soon test Serafina's role as great estate's protector, culminating in a tragedy that tears Serafina's best friend, Braeden Vanderbilt, from her side.

THURSDAY November 10th at 7pm: IS THAT YOU BOY!

1940's Cork, Ireland
IS THAT YOU BOY!

The exploits of a gang of young boys living on Shandon Street in Cork in the 1940's, their scams and schemes to make a little much needed pocket money.

A sort of ‘Bowery Boys’ operation where headquarters was not Louies Ice-cream Parlour (The Bronx) but Julia’s Milk and Cafe Shop at the top of Shandon street where the ‘scams’ were hatched and the measure of a gang member was judged by the number of pints of milk he could consume at a single session and where new gang members were initiated by drinking a pint of thick sour milk brought in from Gills Emporium next door to Julias.

TUESDAY, November 8th at 7pm: SERAFINA AND THE TWISTED STAFF Begins

The next exciting adventure in the New York Times best-selling Serafina series by author Robert Beatty. Serafina finds herself caught between two worlds: she's too wild for Biltmore Estate's beautifully dressed ladies and formal customs, and too human to fully join her forest kin.

Late one night, she encounters a strange and terrifying figure, and then she's attacked by the vicious wolfhounds under his control. Even worse, she's convinced that the stranger is not alone, that he has sent his accomplice into Biltmore in disguise.

A mysterious series of attacks test Serafina's role as Biltmore's protector, culminating in a tragedy that tears Serafina's best friend, Braeden Vanderbilt, from her side. Heartbroken, she flees.
