SUNDAY, September 21st AT 1:30PM: TEA TIME at Baker Street

Published in 1927, THE CASEBOOK OF SHERLOCK HOLMES is the final collection of Holmesian short stories penned by Arthur Conan Doyle.  Corwyn, Kayden and Cale conclude this leg of their magical mystery tour of this canon of work.

TODAY: "The Adventure of the Retired Colourman"
Sherlock Holmes is hired by a retired art supply dealer from Lewisham, Josiah Amberley, to look into his wife’s disappearance. She has left with a neighbour, Dr. Ray Ernest, taking a sizeable quantity of cash and securities. Amberley wants the two tracked down.
Holmes is too busy with another case at the moment; so he sends Dr. Watson to Lewisham to observe what he can, although Watson is keenly aware that this is more Holmes’s province. He does his best, observing that Amberley is busy painting his house, which seems a bit odd. He even sees Amberley’s wife’s unused theatre ticket; she and her young man disappeared while Amberley went to the theatre alone after his wife complained of a headache.  It is all very suspicious and Holmes soon joins Watson in ferreting out the truth behind the mystery.
Presented Live in Voice in the Seanchai Fireside Room, downstairs.

WEDNESDAY, September 17th at 7pm: PIRATES ARE COMING!

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We pillage plunder, we rifle and loot.
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot.
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We extort and pilfer, we filch and sack.
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.
Maraud and embezzle and even highjack.
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.

Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We kindle and char and in flame and ignite.
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.
We burn up the city, we're really a fright.
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.

We're rascals and scoundrels, we're villains and knaves.
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.
We're jokers and black sheep, we're really bad eggs.
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.

We're beggars and blighters and ne'er do-well cads,
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.
Aye, but we're loved by our mommies and dads,
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.
Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me!

TUESDAY, September 16th at 7pm: THE SEA FAIRIES Concludes

Faerie Maven-Pralou brings us to the end of Trot and Capn Bill's adventures under the waves, in the land of Queen Aquarine.   We'll say "goodbye" to all the new fair, sea folk . . . until the next adventure, that is!

Faeirie Maven-Pralou live in voice with this charming work from American Author, L.Frank Baum.

Fun with Frank:
Baum had a flair for being the spotlight of fun in the household, including during times of financial difficulties. His selling of fireworks made the Fourth of July memorable. His skyrockets, Roman candles, and fireworks filled the sky, while many people around the neighborhood would gather in front of the house to watch the displays. Christmas was even more festive. Baum dressed as Santa Claus for the family. His father would place the Christmas tree, behind a curtain, in the front parlor so that Baum could talk to everyone while he decorated the tree without people managing to see him. He maintained this tradition all his life.

MONDAY, September 15th at 7pm: FAR FROM HOME ~ "The People" Continues

"The People: Deluge"  by Zenna Henderson 1966, Concludes

The mysterious but friendly emmigrants to Earth return to visit Merris and Mark to tell about their Home and why they can never return.

Gyro Muggins, Live in Voice.

“Here is kinder, gentler science fiction. The People -- the characters from another world who populate this book and Henderson's other tales -- are what you might call the gentler, better and more spiritually-developed side of humanity.” ~ Amazon Reader Review

"Zenna Henderson is best remembered for her stories of the People which appeared in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction from the early 50s to the middle 70s. The People escaped the destruction of their home planet and crashed on Earth in the Southwest just before the turn of the century. Fully human in appearance, they possessed many extraordinary powers. Henderson's People stories tell of their struggles to fit in and to live their lives as ordinary people, unmolested by fearful and ignorant neighbors. The People are "us at our best, as we hope to be, and where (with work and with luck) we may be in some future." ~ nefsa biography

SUNDAY, September 14th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME at Baker Street!

Published in 1927, THE CASEBOOK OF SHERLOCK HOLMES is the final collection of Holmesian short stories penned by Arthur Conan Doyle.  Corwyn, Kayden and Cale continue their magical mystery tour of this canon of work.

TODAY: "The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place"
Head trainer John Mason from Shoscombe Old Place, a racing stable in Berkshire, comes to Holmes about his master, Sir Robert Norberton. Mason thinks he has gone mad. Sir Robert’s sister, Lady Beatrice Falder owns Shoscombe, but it will revert to her late husband’s brother when she dies. The stable has a horse, Shoscombe Prince, who Sir Robert hopes will win the Derby. He would be out of debt if that actually happened.
Mason is not quite sure what he wants Holmes to investigate, but a number of odd changes have happened at the stable:
  • Why has Lady Beatrice suddenly forgone her usual habit of stopping to greet her favorite horse? Why does she just ride on by in her carriage?
  • Why has Sir Robert become so wild-eyed lately?
  • Why has he given his sister’s dog away to a neighborhood innkeeper?
  • Why does he go to the old crypt at night, and who is that man that he meets there?
  • Why have burnt human bones been found in the furnace at Shoscombe?
This adventure was actually the last full one penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle before his death. The cover of the issue of the Strand where the story appeared is featured above.
Presented Live in Voice in the Seanchai Fireside Room, downstairs.

Published in 1927, THE CASEBOOK OF SHERLOCK HOLMES is the final collection of Holmesian short stories penned by Arthur Conan Doyle.  Corwyn, Kayden and Cale continue their magical mystery tour of this canon of work

TODAY: "The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger"

Holmes is visited by Mrs. Merrilow, a landlady from South Brixton who has an unusual lodger who never shows her face. She saw it once accidentally and it was hideously mutilated. This woman, formerly very quiet, has recently taken to cursing in the night, shouting “Murder, murder!” and “You cruel beast! You monster!”
Also, her health has taken a turn for the worse, and she is wasting away.
Mrs. Merrilow has brought this case to Holmes’s attention as her tenant, Mrs. Ronder, will not involve the clergy or the police in something that she would like to say. She has told her landlady to mention Abbas Parva, knowing that Holmes would understand the reference.
Indeed he does. It was a most tragic case in which a circus lion somehow got loose and savaged two people, one of whom was killed, and the other badly disfigured.

AND A BONUS:  From Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's other non-Holmesian works The Case of Lady Sannox.

Presented Live in Voice in the Seanchai Fireside Room, downstairs.

Dedicated to the daughter she never had but sees all around her, Letter to My Daughter reveals Maya Angelou’s path to living well and living a life with meaning. Here in short spellbinding essays are glimpses of the tumultuous life that taught Angelou lessons in compassion and fortitude: how she was brought up by her indomitable grandmother in segregated Arkansas, taken in at thirteen by her more worldly and less religious mother, and grew to be an awkward six-foot-tall teenager whose first experience of loveless sex paradoxically left her with her greatest gift, a son.
