THURSDAY February 28th at 7pm: THE CALL OF THE WILD pt2

"The Whole Realm Was His"
THE CALL OF THE WILD pt1

A gripping tale of a heroic dog that, thrust into the brutal life of the Alaska Gold Rush, ultimately faces a choice between living in man's world and returning to nature

The year 1890 brought the great Klondike Gold Rush. Strong sled dogs were in high demand to drag thousands of people across the frozen arctic in search of the yellow metal. It didn’t much matter to people where the dogs came from, just so long as they came. Buck was a large powerful St. Bernard-Scotch Shepherd. He lived a happy, pampered life on a ranch in Santa Clara Valley, California until he was stolen, shoved in a crate, and shipped off. He is sold to a pair of French-Canadian dispatchers from the Canadian government, who take him with them to the Klondike, and train him as a sled dog. Buck quickly learns to survive cold winter nights and the pack society. Buck wins a fight with the vicious lead dog of the team, and becomes the team lead himself. The team is then sold to a mail and shipping company and must carry heavy loads to the mining areas. The journeys they make are tiresome and long and the team is worked ragged. One of the team, a big husky named Dave, becomes sick and is eventually shot. Tonight we join the story now at the end of the teams last run from the mines.

WEDNESDAY, February 27th at 7pm: THE SEA, in Music and Poetry

"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by . . ."

You thought Ktadhn and Caledonia were stopping with Love.  No such thing!

Ktahdn and Cale spin an hour of music and poetry of the Sea, including oceanic poems by John Masefield, Nathaniel Hawthorne, D.H. Lawrence, Carl Sandburg, Lucy Maud Montgomery and more.

Music on stream, poetry in Voice.

TUESDAY, February 26th at 7PM: Selections from THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS

Alternately slow-moving and fast-paced, author Kenneth Grahame's 1908 classic focuses on four anthropomorphized animals in a pastoral version of Edwardian England. The novel is notable for its mixture of mysticism, adventure, morality, camaraderie; and celebrated for its evocation of the nature of the Thames Valley

It all begins with the arrival of spring and Mole making the acquaintance of a certain distinguished Rat. Inevitably someone from Toad Hall will come along, "messing about in boats" before long.

Faerie Maven-Pralou presents Selections from Grahame's classic, live in voice.

SUNDAY, February 24th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME with Mary Russell & Sherlock Holmes

The Marriage of Mary Russell, a short story by author Laurie R. King.

Though she cannot entirely discount the effects of the head injuries they were both suffering at the time, Mary Russell is delighted by Sherlock Holmes’s proposal of marriage. After all, they have become partners-in-crime, and she has recently come into her inheritance: what remains but to confirm the union with her mentor-turned-partner through a piece of paper? Russell’s pragmatic side tells her to head straight to the registry office—until Holmes surprises her with a sentimental wish to be married in the chapel of his ancestral manor. There’s just the small issue of ownership: the house is not exactly his, and he is most definitely not welcome there. Of course, such obstacles have never deterred Sherlock Holmes before, and they certainly won’t keep him from concocting an elaborate scheme to evade angry dogs and armed butlers—all in the name of wedded bliss.

TODAY: Part one of Two.  This week with Savannah Blindside, Corwyn Allen, and Caledonia Skytower, live on stream in the Library's Fireside Room (Downstairs).

"The Whole Realm Was His"
THE CALL OF THE WILD pt1

A gripping tale of a heroic dog that, thrust into the brutal life of the Alaska Gold Rush, ultimately faces a choice between living in man's world and returning to nature

The Call of the Wild is a novel by Jack London published in 1903. The story is set in the Yukon during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush—a period when strong sled dogs were in high demand. The novel's central character is a dog named Buck, a domesticated dog living at a ranch in the Santa Clara valley of California as the story opens. Stolen from his home and sold into the brutal existence of an Alaskan sled dog, he reverts to atavistic traits. Buck is forced to adjust to, and survive, cruel treatments and fight to dominate other dogs in a harsh climate. Eventually he sheds the veneer of civilization, relying on primordial instincts and lessons he learns, to emerge as a leader in the wild.

TUESDAY, February 19th at 7pm: THE MOUSE OF AMHERST

When a mouse named Emmaline takes up residence behind the wainscoting of Emily Dickinson's bedroom, she wonders what it is that keeps Emily scribbling at her writing table throughout the day and into the night. Emmaline sneaks a look, and finds that it's poetry! Inspired, Emmaline writes her own first poem and secretly deposits it on Emily's desk. Emily answers with another poem, and a lively exchange begins. In this charming and fanciful introduction to Emily Dickinson, Elizabeth Spires demonstrates the power of poetry to express our deepest feelings, while Claire A. Nivola's delicate pencil drawings capture the intricacies of life in Emily's world. Included are eight of Dickinson's most loved poems, with seven corresponding poems by Emmaline that are sure to bring out the poet in any child.

Faerie Maven-Pralou presents Elizabeth Spire's delightful a mouse's-eye-view of Emily Dickinson, live in voice.

THURSDAY, February 14, @ 3:00 pm: One Billion Rising: Worldwide (and in Second Life!)

One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action to end violence against women (cisgender, transgender, and those who hold fluid identities that are subject to gender-based violence) in human history. The campaign, which launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS.

Second Life has hosted its own One Billion Rising event from the beginning, which makes 2019 the seventh year for art installations, dance and music performances, and spoken word to support the empowerment and end abuses against all women everywhere.

The Seanchai Library will host the Poetry and Prose Stage from 3:00 pm until 4:00 pm SLT tomorrow. Three readers, all women who actively participate in Seanchai events, will bring their passion for literature, story, and justice for women to that stage.

Aoife Lorefield, Boudicca Amat, and Fayleen Bellios will share the stage, combining poetry and prose in a reading event that weaves themes of women's lives and longings with their roles in the world, pointing to a better, stronger, more just future for us all.

Join us tomorrow, for more than the Seanchai hour if you can. This is an important and moving event you won't want to miss.

Love. The taproot of human life has become engulfed in definitions, delimiters, boundaries, precision that wanders word on word into a desert. And yet... it is real.

There are some songs that find a path through the desert, into the heart of love. There are also poems written by those who see deeply into life, and touch the root.

"Hayn went out. It was a mistake he was to regret later-never before had he left even his allies alone in that office, much less a confessed enemy. But the urgency of his inspiration had, for the moment, driven every other thought out of his head. The cleverest criminal must make a slip sooner or later, and it usually proves to be such a childish one that the onlooker is amazed that it should have been made at all. "

SUNDAY, February 2nd at 1:30pm: TEA TIME with Templar ~ The Saint

"Adventure came to him not so much because he sought it as because he brazenly expected it. He believed that life was full of adventure, and he went forward in full blaze and surge of that believe."

The Saint is featured in a series of books by Leslie Charteris published between 1928 and 1963. Simon Templar is a Robin Hood-like criminal known as The Saint.  Blessed with boyish humour, he makes humorous and off-putting remarks and leaves a "calling card" at his "crimes," a stick figure of a man with a halo over his head. He is described as "a buccaneer in the suits of Savile Row, amused, cool, debonair, with hell-for-leather blue eyes and a saintly smile."
