WEDNESDAY, January 31st at 7pm: More FRACTURED SYMMETRY

Corwyn Allen continues a second adventure from Fernando Salazar's collection of Sci-Fi-Fantasy short stories: FRACTURED SYMMETRY.

"Science fiction murder mystery short stories, with Nero Wolfe re-imagined as an alien (which explains a lot).
"In the far future, on another planet, a variety of alien races co-exist (including humans). Reclusive genius Terendurr and his human sidekick Blair solve a number of baffling crimes.
"The premise and main characters here have been lifted from the Nero Wolfe stories, but cleverly adapted. Nero Wolfe himself is an alien (which makes a lot of sense) and his sidekick is a human woman (a great idea). The result is a really enjoyable read: great characters, distinctly alien aliens, and engaging mysteries, all very well written and edited. My only issue was that I’ve never read the Nero Wolfe stories, so I wasn’t sure what here was original and what not. Obviously, the science fiction content is new and I assume the plots are mostly original."

TUESDAY, January 30th at 7PM: THE TWENTY-ONE BALLOONS Continues

With much pomp, and some fairly hysterical circumstances, Professor William Waterman Sherman is off on balloon driven exploration of the globe.  He's planned everything out, down to the last detail.  or at least, that's what he thinks.

To quote Robert Burns, The best laid schemes o'mice an' men , Gang aft a-gley.” And so it shall be with Professor Sherman: sharks volcanoes, and a famous island with a remarkable secret.

Faerie Maven-Pralou continues William Pene' duBois' Newbery Award-winning classic, live in voice.

TUESDAY, January 23rd at 7:00pm: TWENTY ONE BALLOONS Begins

Faerie Maven-Pralou reads from William Pène du Bois’ 1947 children’s classic, The Twenty-one Balloons, a Newbery Medal book in this week when the 2018 Newbery honors will be announced.

A steamship en route across the North Atlantic comes across the strange wreckage of twenty deflated gas balloons and rescue, much to their surprise, a lone man – one Professor William Waterman Sherman.

The professor had last been seen some three weeks previously, departing San Francisco aboard a giant balloon, determined to spend a year aloft and drifting on his own.

Now, as word spreads that the professor has been found alive and well – and in completely the wrong ocean to the one he had last been seen flying towards – the world awaits the story of how he came to circumnavigate the globe in record time, only to be fished from the wreckage of twenty balloons when he had started with just the one. When he has sufficiently rested and recovered after receiving a hero’s welcome on his homecoming, the good professor tells a tale most fantastic…

The events and ideas are based both on scientific fact and imagination, and the descriptions are accompanied by illustrations by du Bois.

SUNDAY, January 21st at 1:30pm: TEA TIME with Robert Burns

Get out your plaids and your wee highland beasties, and come join Corwyn and Caledonia. Burns Night is next week, and we are going to celebrate early with a few little ditties from the man who is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in a form of the Scots language, although much of his writing is also in English and a light Scots dialect, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland. He also wrote in standard English, and in these writings his political or civil commentary is often at its bluntest. Presented live in voice.

TUESDAY, January 16th at 7PM: FRACTURED SYMMETRY Continues

Author Fernando Salazar brings an eclectic background to his writing: A life-long interest in
medieval history, 10+ years intense martial arts training, an early career as a biology researcher, and a later career as a software products developer, a love of wines and cooking, 2 years living and working in India, a somewhat maddening fixation with golf, and a regular program of re-reading the works of Jack Vance and Patrick O’Brien. His writing projects range from scattered one-off SF and Fantasy stories, to the obligatory serial novels.

Blair MacAllister and his Boss investigate mysteries based on science, in a setting that brings them into contact with all the main races of Civspace. Will Blair prove as durable as her boss?

THURSDAY January 11th at 7pm: THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (part two)

"Love me - that's all I ask of you"
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA

In 1890s Paris, the Palais Garnier is believed to be haunted by an entity known as the Phantom or the Opera Ghost. One day, the stage hand, Joseph Bouquet, is found hanged, presumably by the Phantom, after boasting about him to the corps de ballet. At the same time, Christine Daaé, a young Swedish soprano, has been tutored by what she believes to be the Angel of Music, sent by her deceased father. On the night of the gala performance for the old manager's retirement, Christine is called upon to sing in the place of the Opera's leading soprano, Carlotta, who is ill, and her performance is an astonishing success. The Vicomte Raoul de Chagny, who was present at the performance, recognises her as his childhood playmate, and recalls his love for her. He attempts to visit her backstage, where he hears a man speaking to her from inside her dressing room. He investigates the room once Christine leaves, only to find that there's no one else in the room. Book: Phantom of the Opera Author: Gaston Leroux

TUESDAY, January 9th at 7pm: More from FRACTURED SYMMETRY

Blair MacAlister is an expert at Judo, a credible AI hacker, and a certified pilot of craft atmospheric and interstellar. Her favorite weapon is sarcasm, or failing that, her ever-present blaster. Her boss is Terendurr the Black Stone: technical wizard, expert in the ethnography of myriad races, fancier of rare foods and wines, and even rarer fractalites. An Entharion Quadromorph, exiled from his homeworld and under constant threat of assassination, he is also somewhat irritable.

Together they investigate mysteries based on science, in a setting that brings them into contact with all the main races of Civspace: The mysterious Junn, the affable but biologically intense Raylics, the chaotic and powerful Oro-Ka, the commercial minded Keret, and the cynical Phair. At the center of their cases are transformative genetic therapies, unlikely fossils, the linked neurology of symbiotes, and more. Terendurr is over 300 years old and has seen and endured the worst and strangest the galaxy has to offer. Will Blair prove as durable as her boss?

WEDNESDAY, January 3rd at 7PM: More from OLD MOTHER WEST WIND

It's been over a century since readers first ventured into the Green Forest to encounter Reddy Fox, Grandfather Frog, Jimmy Skunk, and other winsome characters. American author Thornton W. Burgess's first published work, Old Mother WestWind, and its 1911 follow-up, Mother West Wind's Children have been delighting readers for 107 years. These gentle stories offer children, and adults a like, enduring lessons about ecology and respect for wildlife.
