AND DON'T FORGET!  at 9pm SEANCHAI LATE NIGHT . . .

WEDNESDAY, June 29th at 7pm: OLLIE'S ODYSSEY

Sometimes, in searching for one book you discover another, and realize it is a treasure.  Caledonia happened on this book while searching through the works of William Joyce for Magicland, and fell in love.  Now, you can too, and it will be totally "YUM."

In the secret realm of toys, there are many mysteries. There is the Code of the Toys, which is as ancient as childhood. There’s also the magic of becoming a child’s favorite, the highest honor in the Toy World.Made by hand by Billy’s mother, Ollie is a special toy, “a toy who will matter.” He becomes Billy’s best friend, confidant, pal, and yes, Billy’s “favorite.”

But there are villains in the Toy World, and Zozo, the clown king, is the most feared. He and his toy henchman (the Creeps) have sworn to steal and imprison favorite toys until they forget their children and become forever lost.

When Ollie is toy-napped, Billy must rescue his beloved favorite from Zozo’s subterranean lair in the old Carnival Place, past the park, through the woods, and into the night.

Never has a journey of ten blocks been more epic.

Caledonia Skytower begins William Joyce's adventure, live in voice.

TUESDAY, June 28th at 7pm: TRIGGER WARNINGS ~ Short Fictions and Disturbances

Multiple award winning, #1 New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman returns to dazzle, captivate, haunt, and entertain with this third collection of short fiction following Smoke and Mirrors and Fragile Things—which includes a never-before published American Gods story, “Black Dog,” written exclusively for this volume.

In this new anthology, Neil Gaiman pierces the veil of reality to reveal the enigmatic, shadowy world that lies beneath. Trigger Warning includes previously published pieces of short fiction—stories, verse, and a very special Doctor Who story that was written for the fiftieth anniversary of the beloved series in 2013—as well “Black Dog,” a new tale that revisits the world of American Gods, exclusive to this collection.

MONDAY, June 27th at 7pm: THE MOUSE OF AMHERST

A fun surprise from Faerie!

Elizabeth Spire's mouse's-eye-view of Emily Dickinson.

When a mouse named Emmaline takes up residence behind the wainscoting of Emily Dickinson's bedroom, she wonders what it is that keeps Emily scribbling at her writing table throughout the day and into the night. Emmaline sneaks a look, and finds that it's poetry! Inspired, Emmaline writes her own first poem and secretly deposits it on Emily's desk. Emily answers with another poem, and a lively exchange begins.

In this charming and fanciful introduction to Emily Dickinson, Elizabeth Spires demonstrates the power of poetry to express our deepest feelings, while Claire A. Nivola's delicate pencil drawings capture the intricacies of life in Emily's world. Included are eight of Dickinson's most loved poems, with seven corresponding poems by Emmaline that are sure to bring out the poet in any child

A tribute to am American icon in the affectionate tradition of Robert Lawson's "Ben & Me," presented live in voice.

SUNDAY, June 26th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME with The Jungle Book

The bungalow in Mumbal, India, where Kipling was born.
Bryn Taleweaver returns to the fireside room for an encore tale from Rudyard Kipling's great work,
The Jungle Book.

Joseph Rudyard Kipling was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist.

Kipling's works of fiction include The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901), and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888). His poems include "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" (1919), "The White Man's Burden" (1899), and "If—" (1910). He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children's books are classics of children's literature; and one critic described his work as exhibiting "a versatile and luminous narrative gift".

Kipling was one of the most popular writers in the United Kingdom, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henry James said: "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius (as distinct from fine intelligence) that I have ever known." In 1907, at the age of 42, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and its youngest recipient to date. He was also sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, both of which he declined.

SUNDAY, June 19th: Another Storied Sunday

@1:30pm ~ TEA TIME with The Jungle Book

Bryn Taleweaver continues to share selections from Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book."

Mowgli is a fictional character and the protagonist of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book stories. He is a feral child from the Pench area in Seoni, India who originally appeared in Kipling's short story "In the Rukh" (collected in Many Inventions, 1893) and then went on to become the most prominent and memorable character in his novels The Jungle Book and The Second Jungle Book (1894–1895), which also featured stories about other characters.

In the stories, the name Mowgli is said to mean "frog", describing his lack of fur. Kipling made up the name, and it "does not mean 'frog' in any language other than the language of the forest."

Kipling stated that the first syllable of "Mowgli" should rhyme with "cow" and is pronounced this way in Britain and some European countries, while in the United States it is almost always pronounced to rhyme with "go".

THE SKRYING GLASS
Village of Glenkilly, southeast Ireland in the year 853
The Lady Deirdre and her serving women stared after her, wondering what great tragedy the skrying glass had foretold for their chieftain’s daughter. It was on that day, the day of her twelfth birthday, that Siobhan vowed she would never wed. The looking glass had shown her that she was cursed. TUESDAY, June 14th at 7pm: SOUTHERN LADIES & GENTLEMEN

The writings of Florence King continue as Trolley Trollop presents Southern Ladies and Gentlemen (1993),

"Looking for guidance in understanding the ways and means of Southern culture? Look no further. Florence King’s celebrated field guide to the land below the Mason-Dixon Line is now blissfully back in print, just in time.

"The Failed Southern Lady’s classic primer on Dixie manners captures such storied types as the Southern Woman (frigid, passionate, sweet, bitchy, and scatterbrained–all at the same time), the Self-Rejuvenating Virgin, and the Good Ole Boy in all his coats and stripes. (The Clinton questions–is he a G.O.B. or isn’t he?–Miss king covers in her hilarious new Afterword.)

"No one has ever made more sharp, scathing, affectionate, real sense out of the land of the endless Civil War than Florence King in these razor-edged pages."

MONDAY, June 13th at 7pm: THE ALCHEMYST Continues

Magic!  Evil Plots! Adventure!

It's the most powerful book that has ever existed.  Nicholas Flamel protects the secret of eternal life is hidden within the Book of Abraham the Mage. In the wrong hands, it will destroy the world. And that's exactly what Dr. John Dee plans to do when he steals it. Humankind won't know what's happening until it's too late.

If the prophecy is right, Sophie and Josh Newman are the only ones with the power to save the world as we know it. Sometimes legends are true. And Sophie and Josh Newman are about to find themselves in the middle of the greatest legend of all time.

THURSDAY, June 9th at 7pm: A SCANDAL IN BOHEMIA At the University of Washington

Seanchai Library is being featured at VIP Event - at Virtual Reality Comic Con (VRCC) at the University of Washington  - with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's A SCANDAL IN BOHEMIA in the new home of the 221B Lounge.

"To Sherlock Holmes she is always THE woman. I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex . . . And when he speaks of Irene Adler, . . .  it is always under the honorable title of 'the woman.'"

Corwyn Allen, Kayden Oconnell, Caledonia Skytower, and Shandon Loring, live in voice.

WEDNESDAY, June 8th at 7PM: More from RAYMIE NIGHTINGALE

"Perhaps the sincerest aim of any fairy tale is not to introduce young readers to the quixotic pleasures of magic and fantasy but rather to initiate all readers into life’s unspeakable verities: Parents desert families, orphaned children often go hungry, and even the most loyal beloveds are capable of astonishing acts of betrayal. Early on in Kate DiCamillo’s captivating new novel, “Raymie Nightingale,” we learn about an older woman who regularly feeds a bevy of swans, seeming “like something out of a fairy tale.” Ten-year-old Raymie Clarke, an anxious heroine, considers the possibility that it’s “a fairy tale that hadn’t been told yet.” That’s an irresistible promise to begin a novel with, and DiCamillo is up to the challenge. With its short, vibrant chapters and clear, gentle prose, this triumphant and necessary book conjures the enchantments of childhood without shying away from the fraught realities of abandonment, abuse and neglect..."

MONDAY, June 6th at 7pm: More from THE ALCHEMYST

Faerie continues Michael Scott's popular adventure.

Sophie and Josh Newman are 15-year-old twins who are working at their summer jobs in The Coffee Cup in San Francisco when a mysterious man, John Dee, comes into the book store right next to them for a book, the Codex – or Book of Abraham the Mage. Josh witness both Nick and Perry using magic. They discover that Nick is not an ordinary bookseller, but is the medieval and the legendary alchemyst, Nicholas Flamel, being kept alive by making the elixir of life (a secret from the Codex) for him and his wife, Perry (Perenelle).

Dee also uses magic and takes the Codex by force while Josh is holding it – resulting in two pages being left behind "The Final Summoning" pages that Dee needs to raise the Dark Elders, the beings whom Dee serves, and who has kept him immortal for several hundred years. Both Flamels need the Codex to make the elixir of life, or they will age rapidly and die within a month. Also, if they do not retrieve the Codex, Dee will summon the Dark Elders to destroy the world and return to an age in which humans are but slaves and food.

SUNDAY Delights with Seanchai Library

Two outstanding sessions today:

@ 1:30 pm, TEA TIME with the JUNGLE BOOK

We welcome Bryn Taleweaver to Seanchai Library for this delightful new series, based on selections from Kipling's classic, presented live in voice.

The tales in the Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book" are fables, using animals in an anthropomorphic manner to give moral lessons. The verses of The Law of the Jungle, for example, lay down rules for the safety of individuals, families, and communities. Kipling put in them nearly everything he knew or "heard or dreamed about the Indian jungle.

The best-known of them are the three stories revolving around the adventures of Mowgli, an abandoned "man cub" who is raised by wolves in the Indian jungle. The most famous of the other four stories are probably "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi", the story of a heroic mongoose, and "Toomai of the Elephants", the tale of a young elephant-handler. As with much of Kipling's work, each of the stories is followed by a piece of verse.

@ 3 pm, More STORIES AT THE PARK, at Holly Kai Park

Trolly Trollop, Kayden Oconnell, and Caledonia Skytower read 100-word drabbles and poems Holly Kai Park, including composition by Rosedrop Rust, presented live in voice. inspired by the current exhibition of art on display.
