FOLLOWED BY SEANCHAI LATE NIGHT AT 9:00PM
ALL SOULS
by Edith Wharton
A thin moon faints in the sky o’erhead,
And dumb in the churchyard lie the dead.
Walk we not, Sweet, by garden ways,
Where the late rose hangs and the phlox delays,
But forth of the gate and down the road,
Past the church and the yews, to their dim abode.
For it’s turn of the year and All Souls’ night,
When the dead can hear and the dead have sight.

WEDNESDAY, October 28th at 7PM: SERAFINA & THE BLACK CLOAK Continues

“Our character isn’t defined
by the battles we win or lose,
but by the battles we dare to fight.”

Serafina goes to battle this week, as she leads the Man in the Black Cloak into her territory to unmask the evil behind his deeds, and reveal his identity.

Caledonia continues Robert Beatty's award-winning debut novel this week, live in voice.

TUESDAY, October 27th at 7 PM: CORWYN'S BAG

All Hallows is almost here, and the time is right for treats!  Corwyn Allen has a bag full of classic tales just right for the season:   such luminaries as H.P. Lovecraft, Lord Dunsany, and Robert W. Chambers. Come and find out what treats are in CORWYN'S BAG, live in voice.

MONDAY, October 26th at 7 pm: A NIGHT IN THE LONESOME OCTOBER Concludes.

The time has come ... the BIG NIGHT where all the Players will gather: Closers, Openers, and those whose loyalties remain dubious.  They will all gather at the top of the hill called "Dog's Nest" to decide the fate of the world - again.

But there is still time for a surprise or two before the moon reaches mid-heaven in the conclusion of Roger Zelazny's A Night In The Lonesome October.

Gyro Muggins, Faerie Maven-Pralou, Kayden  Oconnell, Trolley trollop, and Caledonia Skytower live, in voice.

SUNDAY, October 25th at 1:30 pm: TEA TIME with Neil

Neil Gaiman by mizzy chan from deviantart.com
We had more story than hour last week, at Tea Time.  We are afraid our friend Neil Gaiman got short-sheeted, and NO ONE should go about short-sheeted at THIS time of year. After all, some municipalities have rules about such things, and being incarcerated because your sheet is too short on a October Sunday afternoon is something we wouldn't wish on anyone, much less an accomplished writer that we admire.

So, John and Cale will gather that the hearth side again - cupcakes and toffee apples at the ready - to delve once more into Gaiman's Fragile Things. Selections might include: "The Hidden Chamber", The Forbidden Brides of the Faceless Slaves in the Secret House of the Night of Dread Desire," and just possibly "Fifteen Painted Cards from a Vampire Tarot."

John Morland and Caledonia Skytower, live in voice.

WEDNESDAY, October 21st at 7 pm: SERAFINA AND THE BLACK CLOAK Continues

Caledonia presents more from author Robert Beatty's debut novel, set in and around the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina around the turn of the 19th Century into the 20th.

This week: Serafina enters the forest, forbidden to her by her father for as long as she can remember.

“Never go into the deep parts of the forest, for there are many dangers there, both dark and bright, and they will ensnare your soul.”

Now she is there, and now she is compelled to find out the mystery of who she is and where she came from.

Presented live in voice.

TUESDAY, October 20th at 7 pm: THE UPPER BERTH

Illustraion by scifijackrabbit from deviantart
Set sail with Trolley tonight as she charts a course through one of the great classics of horror fiction. Francis Marion Crawford's THE UPPER BERTH is considered among the preeminent ghost stories of all time.

Every now and again, the smell sea water permeates the air, as if the cabin had been flooded and never properly repaired. The porthole opens repeatedly in the night with no conceivable reason. And the last few passengers who have slept in the upper berth have run through the ship like men possessed to throw themselves into the ocean. Mr. Brisbane, resident of the lower berth, and the ship's captain wait up all night to get to the bottom of the mystery... and neither will ever sail on that boat again.

Crawford was an American writer noted for his many novels, especially those set in Italy, and for his classic weird and fantastic stories.

MONDAY, October 19th at 7 pm: A NIGHT IN THE LONESOME OCTOBER Continues

The Lonesome October Crew continue their journey through Roger Zelazny's month-spanning fantasy adventure: Faerie Maven-Pralou, Gyro Muggins, Kayden Oconnell, Trolley Trollop, and Caledonia Skytower, live in voice.

Zelazny (1937-1995) was an American poet and writer of fantasy and science fiction short stories and novels, best known for The Chronicles of Amber. He won the Nebula award three times (out of 14 nominations) and the Hugo award six times (also out of 14 nominations), including two Hugos for novels: the serialized novel ...And Call Me Conrad (1965; subsequently published under the title This Immortal, 1966) and then the novel Lord of Light (1967).

Author George R.R. Martin penned this moving tribute to Zelazny.

SUNDAY, October 18th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME with Neil and Friend

It is no secret: we at Seanchai Library love Neil Gaiman.  It is equally no mystery that when someone offers to present any work by Ray Bradbury, we begin to tingle.

Imagine, these two together - two creative masters together, for tea.  It is possible they had tea once.  They knew each other, and the respect of one for the other can be read in every line of Gaiman's The Man Who Forgot Ray Bradbury. If you scroll down in the hyperlinked article, to the "about" article, you'll see that he sent the story to Mr. Bradbury for his 91st Birthday. So, who knows ?

BUT those are not the stories we have today.  Imagine Neil and Ray did have tea together, feet to a roaring fire where they cozily swapped ghostly tales of spooky doings: Bradbury's with impeccable form and biting impact; Gaiman's with a deceptive humor and irony that masks tremendous power.

John and Caledonia gather at the Seanchai Fireside room to share stories of Ray, Neil, and the season: October Game, Heavy Set (Bradbury) and "October in the Chair" by Gaiman ... if time and enthusiasm permits, we'll add in Neil's Forbidden Brides of the Faceless Slaves in the Secret House of the Night of Dread Desire.

As always, presented live in voice.

WEDNESDAY, October 7th at 7 pm: SERAFINA AND THE BLACK CLOAK

Caledonia continues Robert Beatty's award-winning debut novel tonight, live in voice.

“It was true that she was a creature of the night. But she would decide for herself what that meant. She had two choices before her: to slink away and hide, or to dare to fight.”

“Our character isn’t defined by the battles we win or lose, but by the battles we dare to fight.”

― Robert Beatty, Serafina and the Black Cloak

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Bradley%20University/100/209/28

TUESDAY, October 6th at 7 pm: THE LIFE & TIMES OF THE THUNDERBOLT KID

Kayden continues young Bill Bryson's adventures tonight, live in voice.

“It’s a bit burned,” my mother would say apologetically at every meal, presenting you with a piece of meat that looked like something — a much-loved pet perhaps — salvaged from a tragic house fire. “But I think I scraped off most of the burned part,” she would add, overlooking that this included every bit of it that had once been flesh.

Happily, all this suited my father. His palate only responded to two tastes - burned and ice cream — so everything suited him so long as it was sufficiently dark and not too startlingly flavorful. Theirs truly was a marriage made in heaven, for no one could burn food like my mother or eat it like my dad.”
― Bill Bryson, The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid

MONDAY, October 5th at 7 pm: A NIGHT IN THE LONESOME OCTOBER

Tonight, the journey continues . . .

A Night in the Lonesome October is narrated from the point-of-view of Snuff, a dog who is Jack the Ripper's companion. The bulk of the story takes place in London and its environs, though at one point the story detours through the dream-world described by Lovecraft in The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath. Though never explicitly stated, various contextual clues within the story (the most obvious of which being the appearance of Sherlock Holmes or "The Great Detective") imply that it takes place during the late Victorian period.

Gyro Muggins, Trolley Trollop, Faerie Maven-Pralou, Kayden Oconnell, and Caledonia Skytower, Live in Voice.

SUNDAY, October 4th at 1:30pm: TEA TIME at Baker Street!

Join the Tea Time Crew as they journey with Sherlock Holmes into THE VALLEY OF FEAR.

By studying the soles of Cecil Barker's slippers, Holmes ascertains that Barker used the sole of his own shoe to make the mark on the window sill so as to give the appearance that someone exited that way. Back at their lodgings in the village, Holmes tells Watson that Cecil Barker and Mrs. Douglas are certainly lying but that why they are lying is not yet clear. When a shotgun is fired at close range, the sound is muffled. The housekeeper heard what she described as a door slamming half an hour before the alarm was raised. Holmes believes that what the housekeeper actually heard was the shot fired when the murder really took place. White Mason, the Sussex detective, and MacDonald report that they have traced a bicycle found on the grounds of the house to an American staying at a guest house. It seems likely that he was the assailant since the gun used in the murder was of an American make, but there is no sign of the man.

And what is "The Valley of Fear"?  This week we conclude Part 1 of Conan Doyle's last Sherlock Holmes novel, before moving ahead to the past in part two next week.

Join Kayden, John, and Caledonia in the Fireside Room as they continue with Part Three of this six part presentation, live in voice.
