MONDAY, October 29th at 7:00pm: "A Night In The Lonesome October" ~ Part 4

The rare full moon on halloween that signals either the "opening" or "closing" of a mystic gate.  The players are taking their sides, and some have already been "eliminated" from play - killed - and some who have been friends have parted.  Or have they?  Things are not always what they seem. The stakes increase with every hour, just as the moon grows.  What will happen next?

Written in a series of 32 short chapters: one for each day for the foreboding month of October. Boldly original and wildly entertaining, “A Night in the Lonesome October” is a darkly sparkling gem - an amalgam of horror, humor, mystery and fantasy that is exactly what one would expect from the bizarre and brilliant imagination of award-winning author Roger Zelazny.

Join Shandon Loring, Gyro Muggins, Caledonia Skytower and Faerie Maven as they continue the journey, live in Voice. Part 4 of 5.

Arsenic and Old Lace

Joseph Kesserling’s Arsenic and Old Lace is billed as a dark comedy, but the energy and lighthearted atmosphere created by your favourite Seanchai storytellers is anything but dark. The setting of the play is the Brewster family home where the two aunts of Mortimer Brewster, a local theatre critic, live. Mortimer stumbles upon a dark family secret and the madness begins.

SATURDAY 27 October at 10am in Raglan - "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow"

The story is set circa 1790 in the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town, in a secluded glen called Sleepy Hollow. It tells of Ichabod Crane, a sycophantic, lean, lanky, and extremely superstitious schoolmaster from Connecticut, who competes with Abraham "Brom Bones" Van Brunt, the town rowdy, for the hand of 18-year-old Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter and sole child of a wealthy farmer. As Crane leaves a party he attended at the Van Tassel home on an autumn night, he is pursued by the Headless Horseman, who is supposedly the ghost of a Hessian trooper who had his head shot off by a stray cannonball during "some nameless battle" of the American Revolutionary War, and who "rides forth to the scene of battle in nightly quest of his head". Join us as Bear Silvershade and Derry McMahon read this favorite fall tale aloud.

We'll be at Raglan Shire with the Tinies - but biggies are welcome too!!  LM to be sent before.

FRIDAY, October 26th @ 8PM: "The Turn of the Screw" ~ Concludes

Tonight all will be revealed, or will it?

Critics over the century and more since The Turn of the Screw was published, cannot agree on exactly what the truth of this ghostly thriller is.  It's ambiguities are part of what make it one of the all time classic ghost stories.  Come along tonight for the conclusion, and draw a few of your own.

THURSDAY, October 25th @ 7PM: "The Turn of the Screw" ~ Part 3

We draw closer to the surprising conclusion with tonight's installment ...
Did you miss what happened in any of the previous nights?? Click on the tab above under the Seanchai Library Blog Header to read up on what happened the previous night.

Originally published in 1898, it is a ghost story, regardless of what other labels have been applied to it over the years.
Due to its ambiguous content, it became a favourite text of academics who subscribe to New Criticism. The novella has had differing interpretations, often mutually exclusive. Many critics have tried to determine the exact nature of the evil hinted at by the story. However, others have argued that the true brilliance of the novella comes with its ability to create an intimate confusion and suspense for the reader.

WEDNESDAY, October 24th @ 7pm: "The Turn of the Screw" ~ Part 3

The Haunting plot thickens.  Is the haunting real?  Or is the governess mad?

Did you miss what happened in Parts 1 & 2? Click on the tab above under the Seanchai Library Blog Header to read up on what happened the previous night.

The imagery of The Turn of the Screw is reminiscent of the gothic genre. The emphasis on old and mysterious buildings throughout the novella reinforces this motif. James also relates the amount of light present in various scenes to the strength of the supernatural or ghostly forces apparently at work. The governess refers directly to The Mysteries of Udolpho and indirectly to Jane Eyre, evoking a comparison of the governess not only to Jane Eyre's protagonist, but to Bertha, the madwoman confined in Thornfield.

TUESDAY, October 23rd at 7:00pm: "The Turn of the Screw" ~ Part 2

Henry James' chilling classic continues tonight.

Did you miss what happened in Part 1?  Click on the tab above under the Seanchai Library Blog Header to read up on what happened the previous night.

Throughout his career James was attracted to the ghost story genre. However, he was not fond of literature's stereotypical ghosts, the old-fashioned 'screamers' and 'slashers'. Rather, he preferred to create ghosts that were eerie extensions of everyday reality—"the strange and sinister embroidered on the very type of the normal and easy," as he put it in the New York Edition preface to his final ghost story, "The Jolly Corner".

The Turn of the Screw is no exception to this formula. In fact, some have wondered if he didn't intend the "strange and sinister" to be embroidered only on the governess's mind and not on objective reality. The result has been a long-standing critical dispute about the reality of the ghosts and the sanity of the governess.

Presented live in Voice.

MONDAY, October 22nd @ 7pm: "The Turn of the Screw" ~ Part 1

The Seanchai Library presents Henry James Classic Ghost Story as part of their One-Work-In-One-Week Project: The entire work will be presented inside of one week, Live in Voice.  It begins tonight.

"The Turn of the Screw" is an intense psychological tale of terror. It is the story of a Governess who comes to live with and take care of two young children. The Governess loves her new position in charge of the young children, however she is soon disturbed when she begins to see ghosts.

Find you can't make every session and hear the entire work?  No worries.  Check here as each daily post will have a summary of the previous night's story, so you can keep up.  There will also be a notecard giver in the Library so you can keep up in world as well if you wish.

SUNDAY, October 14th @ 2pm: TEA TIME at Baker Street

The last adventure in this series  from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Master Detective, Sherlock Holmes.  THIS WEEK: "The Copper Beeches." Grab a cuppa and a smackerel of something and join Caledonia in the lower level of the library for mystery and intrigue!

Violet Hunter visits Holmes, asking whether she should accept a job as governess; a job with very strange conditions. She is enticed by the phenomenal salary which, as originally offered, is £100 a year, later increased to £120 when Miss Hunter baulks at having to cut her long hair short (Her previous position paid £48 per year). This is only one of many peculiar provisos to which she must agree. The employer, Jephro Rucastle, seems pleasant enough, yet Miss Hunter obviously has her suspicions.

Presented Live in Voice.

NOTE:  This completes The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.  TEA TIME will be going on hiatus from now through the end of the year.  Drop Caledonia a line if you are interested in TEA TIME in the new year and suggest a series for it.

WEDNESDAY, October 3rd at 7pm: Petty Magic!

Author Camille DeAngelis weaves a captivating tale of adventure and timeless romance, blending World War II heroics with witchcraft and wit, conjuring a fabulously rich world where beldames and mortal men dare to fall in love. (Selections)

Evelyn Harbinger sees nothing wrong with a one-night stand. At one hundred and forty nine years old, Eve may look like she bakes oatmeal cookies in the afternoon and dozes in her rocking chair in the evenings, but once the gray hair and wrinkles are traded for jet-black tresses and porcelain skin, she can still turn heads as the beautiful girl she once was. Can’t fault a girl for having a little fun, can you?

Caledonia shares selections from this delightful and witty take on craft and romance.  Be careful!  You never know who will become bewitched! "Bewitched!" you scoff, "HA!"  Well don't be so sure: this book may be by an Amaerican author, but it was penned in Galway, and we know how pungent the Celtic influence can be!
